Canny the Can and the Book of Time Slot Review 2024

Canny the Can from Hacksaw Gaming is back for his glorious return in Canny the Can and the Book of Time!

It’s hard to believe that Hacksaw Gaming were once a humble provider focused on Instant Win Scratchcards and a couple of unremarkable slots. Of course, the Hacksaw Gaming that we know and love today are anything but humble with their catalogue of shockingly good games, yet they’ve gone back to their roots in a sense with another slot featuring Canny the Can.

Stick ‘Em was our first foray with the cheerful chappy Canny, and in 2021 Hacksaw released a sequel aptly named Stack ‘Em. The contrast in win potential and features between the two showed both how times had changed and how much Hacksaw had improved, and here we are once more to witness Canny’s cheerful optimism once more.

The difference in potential between Canny the Can and the Book of Time might not be as vast as the difference between Stick ‘Em and Stack ‘Em, but we’re very interested in Hacksaw’s latest invention regardless.

Let’s check it out.

Book of Time Base Game

Canny the Can and the Book of Time Base Game and Features

Canny the Can and the Book of Time is a 5 reel slot with 20 fixed paylines. Winning combinations are formed when 3 or more of the same symbols land from left to right, starting from the left-most reel.

The minimum bet available to players is £/€0.10 per spin and the maximum bet available is £/€100 per spin, with plenty of other betting options in between the two. Book of Time has a theoretical RTP of 96.13% and a max win cap of 10,000x.

In terms of symbols, the highest-paying regular symbol here is the Mouse symbol, followed by the Snake, Dead Bird, Hat and Wand. Low-payijng symbols are standard Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten.

In addition to this, the Book Scatter also acts as a Wild, substituting for all High and Low-paying symbols in the paytable. The Book Scatter does not appear in the What Time Is It? bonus round. Also present is the Clock Man Scatter symbol, which only appears in the base game.

The base game leaves little to the imagination and lacks any exciting features or modifiers. This is slightly unusual for a Hacksaw Gaming slot, but they’ve more than made up for it by delivering 2 exciting Free Spins rounds to keep you on your toes.

Canny the Can and the Book of Time Free Spins

During the base game, you have the opportunity to land 1 of 2 exciting Bonus rounds. Up for grabs is the It’s a Classic! and What Time Is It? Bonus rounds. More on these below!

It’s a Classic!

Landing 3, 4 or 5 Book Scatters across the reels triggers the It’s a Classic! Free Spins round, awarding 10, 15 and 20 Free Spins respectively.

Depending on how many triggering Book Scatters land, you will be awarded with the following number of Special symbols.

  • 3 Book Scatters – Awards 1 Special symbol.
  • 4 Book Scatters – Awards 2 Special symbols.
  • 5 Book Scatters – Awards 3 Special symbols.

The special symbol will be any of the High or Low-paying symbols in the paytable. Once your special symbol(s) are chosen, a Gold Frame will be applied and the symbol(s) will change colour.

During this round, whenever your chosen special symbol(s) appear on at least 3 reels, they will expand to fill the entire reel they are on. Once they expand, special symbols will pay anywhere and do not need to be adjacent to one another.

Landing 3 Book Scatters during this round will award an additional +5 Free Spins and +1 extra Special symbol. Retriggers can occur until the special symbol bar above the reel set is filled.

What Time Is It?

Landing 3 Clock Man Scatters across the reels triggers the What Time Is It? round, awarding 10 Free Spins. It’s here that you will come across Clock Activator symbols and Multipliers.

Once triggered, above reels 2, 3 and 4 sits a Clock. With each Free Spin, the clock’s hands will spin to reveal a new time.

If a Clock Activator symbol in the form of an X lands in view, it will award either regular Wilds or Multiplier Wilds of x2, x3, x4, x5, x6, x7, x8, x9, x10, x11 and x12. The Multiplier value is determined by the time on the reels respective Clock.

Canny the Can and the Book of Time: Our Verdict

Canny the Can was always quite charming. Even we have a soft spot for him, and we’ve always been a loud advocate for Hacksaw’s darker games.

The inspiration from rubber hose animation makes Canny quite unique compared to other games. They’ve always sort of reminded us of Cuphead, the run-and-gun video game released in 2017. Just like Cuphead, Hacksaw Gaming and Canny the Can draws inspiration from an older era while simultaneously relying on modern gameplay features.

The It’s a Classic! Bonus Round is a ‘book of’ style kind of bonus round, which is quite out of the ordinary for Hacksaw Gaming. However, the What Time Is It? Bonus Round is more their style with a bonus round that utilises what Hacksaw is best at…Multipliers.

The book style bonus round might not be their usual style, but we appreciate its presence nonetheless. More Features are always better in our opinion, and Hacksaw are always good at adorning their games with lots of them.

As suspected, the maximum win cap here doesn’t show the same sort of jump that we witnessed from Stick ‘Em and Stack ‘Em. In fact, the maximum win cap here is identical to Stack ‘Em at 10,000x the bet. This is still quite a formidable figure, and it doesn’t undermine the great Stack ‘Em which we also enjoyed.

Overall, Canny the Can’s latest adventure showcases his charm and Hacksaws innovation once again. For all of their brilliance, they’ve had a couple of disappointing releases here and there, but Canny the Can and the Book of Time isn’t one of them.
