The Red Queen Base Game and Features

The Red Queen is a 5+1-reel slot with a minimum of 243 ways to win. Winning combinations are formed when 3 or more of the same symbols land from left to right, starting from the leftmost reel.

The minimum bet available here is £/€0.20 per spin and the maximum bet available is £/€100 per spin, with plenty of other options in between the two. This game has a theoretical RTP of 96.06% and a max win cap of 5,000x.

In terms of symbols, the highest-paying regular symbol here is the Queen, followed by the Rabbit, Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter, and Mouse. Low-paying symbols are standard Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Ten.

Wild symbols appear on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5 only, substituting for all High and Low-paying symbols from the paytable. Wilds can land with a random Multiplier of x2 or x4.

Also present in The Red Queen are Mystery symbols. At the end of each spin, where present, Mystery symbols will transform into 1, 2, or 4 instances of the same High or Low-paying symbol.

Extra Reel

During the base game, the 6th reel is present but locked. Each time 2 or 3 Scatters land in view, the 6th reel will unlock and spins only Scatters, Queen, and Blank symbols.

If a Scatter symbol lands in view on the 6th reel, the Free Spins round is awarded, but if the Queen symbol lands, the Queen Respin feature is triggered.

During the Queen Respin feature, all Scatter symbols that landed in the base game will transform into Wilds with a random Multiplier of x2, x3, or x5, remaining on the reels for the subsequent Respin.

The Red Queen Free Spins

Landing 3 or 4 Scatters on reels 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 automatically triggers the Free Spins round.

Before the round begins, a Clock will appear to reveal the number of Free Spins you will start the round with. The hands of the clock will spin and randomly stop on an hour which is equal to the number of Free Spins granted.

If you trigger the Free Spins round with 3 Scatters, the green area is from 1 to 4 on the clock. If you trigger the Free Spins round with 4 Scatters, the green area is from 1 to 6 on the clock.

During Free Spins, the 6th reel is always active, containing regular High and Low-paying symbols. Above the reels sits an additional reel with 4 Soldiers present.  With each spin, the Soldiers can reveal Modifiers randomly. These are as follows.

• +Ways – Guarantees that split symbols in 2 or 4 land randomly on the reel below.
• +Wild – Guatrantees that 1 Wild symbol with a random Multiplier of x2, x3, or x5 lands randomly on the reel below.
• +1 Spin – Awards an additional +1 Free Spin.

The Red Queen: Our Verdict

Many Providers have been inspired by Lewis Carroll’s novel, Alice in Wonderland in the past, which is evident in the number of Alice in Wonderland-themed slots we’ve come across in the past, but has Pragmatic Play done it justice in their new slot, The Red Queen?

Mystical floating mushrooms and a number of recognizable characters are a big clue that we’re in Wonderland,  but there seems to be one important character missing from the bunch…where is Alice?

With Mystery symbols appearing on almost every spin, coupled with Split symbols and Multiplier Wilds, there’s never a dull moment in the base game, but are they quite as magical as Wonderland itself?

The mystery symbols are great and do well to deliver a few cheeky wins here and there, but Pragmatic Pay could have made them a little more interesting by revealing Scatters or Wilds.

The 6th extra reel is one of promise and potential, that’s if you can get it to open. Hidden behind the 6th reel is your second chance at triggering the Free Spins round, along with a special Queen Respin feature that puts your landed Scatters to good use by transforming them into Multiplier Wilds.

Once the Free Spins round is triggered, that once stubborn 6th reel that you struggled to unlock stays unlocked for the entire round, but it isn’t quite as magical as it was in the base game.

Instead, the magic falls upon the additional reel atop the reel set, where 4 Soldiers are waiting to bestow their special Modifiers upon you.

Pragmatic Play has resorted back to their safety net in terms of statistics, with The Red Queen sitting at a mere 5,000x. This max win is sufficient enough for the average player, but for those who are used to bigger figures seen in Nolimit City titles, you may be comfortable elsewhere.
