as we're close to the 2021 version, maybe we should review and revive this thread. The Masters is a great event to back on because always played at the same venue and (until last year) at the same time of year so course form is super important, Looking at all players who have had 3 or more top 20s since 2014 is a good place to start and produces a fairly short list to consider:

Dustin Johnson 5 top 10s since 2015, and unquestionably the world number 1 at the moment. He is favourite but can't see him not placing so I'd say he is a maximum each way bet to nothing.

Rory McIlroy 6 top 10s since 2014 and has a perfect game for Augusta. Slightly worrying win ratio for one so talented, but surely won't be far away again.

Hideki Matsuyama-5 top 15s since 2014, but seems to have disappeared completely, and even when he last played, wasn't in great form. Going back to Augusta may bring back his mojo, but risky betting proposition nowadays.

Jordan Spieth-from 2014 to 2018 went 2-1-2-11-3, but form tailed off terribly in last couple of years. Has been scrambling superbly in last few weeks but erratic driving still a concern. Poor driving not as important as a good short game so he could go well again at a place he loves.

Paul Casey-4 top 15s but again not so good in last 2 years. In good form this year though and will surely go well.

Justin Rose-4 top 12 finishes including 2 2nd places, but recent form disappointing. He may bounce back at beloved Augusta, but poor in last 2 years there and a risky bet now.

Ricky Fowler-Used to be Mr Reliable in majors and has 4 top 12s at Augusta, but his form has really fallen of a cliff and can't consider backing him

Adam Scott-3 top 20 finishes including as recently as 2 years ago, but seems more and more like yesterdays man, and even in his pomp, his putting was never great. Can be left alone.

Justin Thomas- Top 20 last 3 years but has gone right off the boil after good start to the year. Has the game and the talent to bounce back but comes with a risk.

Brookes Koepka-Injury has dulled his Iron Man image but 3 top 11 finishes in last 4 years good and has right game for Augusta. Shown signs of good form this year but also more injury problems so again risky.

Jon Rahm-Top 7 last 3 years and close to world number 1 in that time. Not at his super best this year but certainly one to consider.

Webb Simpson. Not the sexy image of some of the top stars and certainly doesn't; hit it miles, but top 20 in last 3 years shows he knows how to play Augusta and he could be a nice outside bet.

Conclusion

Anyone wanting a bet should wait until the week of the event as the big firms will probably be offering each way 10 places, which is a great concession. The ones I will definitely be looking to back (all each way of course) are DJ (currently available at 6/1),  McIlroy (10/1), Spieth (14/1), Casey, (40/1) Rahm (10/1) and Simpson (40/1). I will also mention Lee Westwood, who has a phenomenal Masters record if you go back a few years (and had a top 20 as recently as 2017), and is in better form than ever at the age of 47 this year. He's 100/1 in places and that is massive. Also look out for him in match bets, group bets and so on. Few play Augusta better than him

The Masters is the best Major around! no one knows how the course will play..... Bookies only normally go Top 8 though, as there is less players than the other Major's!

Update after the TPC. Justin Thomas turned his recent bad form upside down by winning nicely and must go into the portfolio now. McIlroy continues to be very poor and seems to be tinkering with his swing so a real risk at the moment. Casey and Rahm played well and are still on course. Spieth and DJ were solid but not spectacular and Simpson missed the cut. Westwood brilliant again and I'm going to be all over him in the speciality bets.

Masters starts tomorrow so last update before the off. Rahm has become a dad so can relax and must go well. Spieth won again and even though he is still driving wildly, he loves Augusta and his short game is something else. I still don't want McIlroy as his game is too up and down, and the hard and fast course won't suit him. DJ has done nothing lately but he's so laid back that nothing fazes him and he can easily bounce back so would hate to leave him out. I'm going to place my best at Sky as they have a massive 11 (ELEVEN) places. So here are my outright bets-all each way of course:

Of those who finished top 20 last year, Reed, Simpson, Connors, Matsuyama, Leishman, Schauffele, and Rahm did so again. Rose who led for the first 2 days and Matsuyama who won both have great Augusta records. Great news for backers! So how did my bets pan out?

Dustin Johnson £50e/w at 8/1. Never really got going and somehow managed to finish badly enough on day 2 to miss the cut-putted poorly which you can't do at Augusta and a big disappointment LOST. (-£100)

Justin Thomas.  £40e/w at 9/1  Had just gone favourite on day 3 when he went in the water and took 8 which finished him off. Played pretty well otherwise and finished a respectable 21st but no good for my bet. LOST. (-£80)

Jon Rahm £40 e/w at 10/1. Steady enough over the first 3 days but 3 72s left him too far back. Shot a brilliant 66 on Sunday to run on for tied 5th, but never ever looked like winning. A profit at least. PLACED (+£40)

Jordan Spieth, £40 e/w at 11/1. Played great except for a triple bogey 7 on day 2. Good to see him back on form and he places yet again at his beloved Augusta. PLACED (+£48)

Paul Casey. £20 e/w at 28/1. Loads of birdies but loads of dropped shots too. Finished nicely for 26th overall but no good for my bet. LOST. (-£40)

Lee Westwood £20 e/w at 28/1 Very very disappointing-missed cut. LOST (-£40)

Webb Simpson £20 e/w at 30/1 Played great again but sloppy 76 on Friday cost him dear. Finished 12th-just out of the money. LOST (-£40)

Hideki Matsuyama £20 e/w at 35/1. What can I say? Played brilliant on Saturday and most of Sunday. Slight wobble at the end but never really looked like losing on last 2 days. WON (+£840)

Overall profit on outright bets: £528
