For those who are strangers to the series, the mighty Black Knight faces many trials and tribulations within the series, remaining a much-loved classic character in many player’s eyes. In Black Knight Evolution, the Knight takes on the Mighty Ways mechanic, which gave older titles such as Raging Rhino and 300 Shields a new appeal.

Base Game & Features
Black Knight Evolution is a standard 5-reel Video Slot, complete with 3 rows, 243 ways, and varying bet sizes between £.€0.10 and £.€10 per spin. Due to the nature of the Mighty Ways mechanic, the reels can expand up to a maximum of 32,768 ways to win.
Wins occur when 3-5 matching symbols land from left to right, starting from the leftmost reel. This game has 6 High-paying and 4 Low-paying symbols, each awarding wins between 0.5x and 5x your bet.
Black Knight Evolution is classified as a Highly Volatile slot with an overall RTP of 96%. At the time of this review, the total max win cap was not available. Non-UK players will have access to an Autoplay and Premium Play function.
Wild Symbols
The Black Knight acts as a Wild symbol, covering 2 positions and substituting for all symbols except Scatters. Wild symbols may land fully or partially in view.
Expanding Reels
In the base game, each round begins with 3 rows and 243 ways to win. During each spin, there is a chance that the reels will expand upwards to reveal more ways and symbols. Each reel will expand independently and by a random number of symbols.
The maximum height each reel can achieve is 8 symbols, introducing a maximum of 32,768 ways to win in a single spin. After a round, the reels will reset to their default state.
Gamble Feature
Players can choose to activate the Gamble Feature at any time during gameplay. This feature allows players to gamble wins over 5x their bet for a Cash Prize or entry into Free Spins.
If Premium Play is also active, the Gamble Feature will trigger when a win of 2.5x or more is achieved. Each gamble option displays a column with either a Cash Prize or Free Spins that can be won. The odds of winning each gamble are presented in Green in each column.
Premium Play
Activating the Premium Play feature will incur a 1.5x bet increase. When this function is active, all wins greater than 2x your bet will trigger the Knight Times Bonus.
Once active, a Wheel appears with an Outer Ring of various Win Multipliers between x1 and x5, and Arrow positions, whilst the Inner Ring is fixed with 6, 8, 10, 12, and 15 Free Spins.
Win Multipliers are applied to the initiating win, after which, the Knight Times Bonus is complete. Landing on an Arrow position will activate the inner ring, resulting in Free Spins and a Bonus Guarantee.
Free Spins
Landing 3, 4, or 5 Scatters in the base game triggers the Free Spins round, awarding 8, 12, and 20 Free Spins respectively.
At the start of the round, above each reel, there is a Super Spins Meter which contains a random number of spins between 2 and 10.
When 1 or more Scatters hit in this round, the reel they appear on expands by +1 symbol, awarding +1 Free Spin to the meter. Once all regular spins are complete, the Super Spins round will commence.
Super Spins
Each meter above fully expanded reels will award the number of Super Spins, accumulating them in a separate meter. Please note, that all Low-paying symbols are removed from the reels at this time.
When 1 or more Scatters land in Super Spins, the reel they appear on will expand by +1 symbol, awarding +1 Super Spin. If a reel reaches maximum capacity, the number of Super Spins above it will be awarded.
Our Verdict
It’s always nice to see a classic and much-loved character return to your screens, particularly during many modern advances within the iGaming industry.
What’s great about Black Knight Evolution is that it’s the next Light & Wonder series to be introduced to the Mighty Ways mechanic. However, unlike Raging Rhino and 300 Shields, the Mighty Ways mechanic is somewhat limited in its abilities here.
What we mean by this is that there is no Cascading Reels function that allows the reels to reach their maximum potential in a single spin. Instead, you’re at the mercy of a random Expanding Reels feature which triggers once in a blue moon. Even when this feature triggers, individual reels seem to only expand by 1 symbol position – not quite as mighty as this mechanic once was.
Although the function of the Mighty Ways mechanic is disappointing, Black Knight Evolution wins players over with its Premium Play, Gamble Feature, and Free Spins round. With premium play active, players can win Free Spins and Cash Prizes through a nifty Wheel function, but this may only be available to players outside the UK.
In Free Spins, the Mighty Ways mechanic is limited once again, only this time, Scatter symbols are required to increase the reel heights by a mere 1 symbol. However, once a reel is expanded, it will remain so for the duration of the feature.
Triggering the Super Spins element of Free Spins is pretty straightforward, with the help of Scatter symbols. When a reel is fully expanded, its respective Super Spins are activated above it. However, activating this feature is more difficult than you’d expect, considering the number of Scatters needed for each reel to achieve its maximum height.
