Our first impressions of Black Bull wasn’t that great, to be honest. It’s timeworn theme has been used in innumerable slots before, but can Black Bull stand out in other aspects?

Black Bull Base Game and Features

Black Bull is a 5 reel slot with 20 fixed paylines. Winning combinations can be formed by connecting 3 or more of the same symbol type from left to right, starting from the left-most reel.

The minimum bet available here is £/€0.20 per spin and the maximum bet available is £/€100 per spin, with plenty of other options in between the two. Black Bull has a theoretical RTP of 96.51% which increases to 96.69% through the Bonus Buy option.

In terms of symbols, the highest paying regular symbol in Black Bull is the Bull, folowed by the Wolf, Eagle, Ram and Iguana. Low-paying symbols are standard Ace, King, Queen and Jack.

There is also a Wild symbol present on all reels which substitutes for all symbols except Money symbols. The Wild symbol plays an important part in the base game in a feature known as the Money Collection feature. More on this below.

Money Collection Feature

During the base game you will come across a gold coin known as a Money symbol. Each Money symbol takes on its own Cash Value of either 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 7.5x, 10x, 20x or 50x your current bet.

Whenever a Wild symbol lands at the same time as Money symbols, all Wild symbols present will Collect their Cash Values and apply them to your total win for that spin.

Black Bull Free Spins

Landing 6 or more Money symbols on the reels triggers the Free Spins round. Depending on how many Money symbols are present during the inital trigger, determines the amount of Free Spins you will start the round with.

Before the Free Spins round begins, the total value of all Money symbols that triggered the round is collected, serving as the starting value for the Progression feature.

Progression Feature

During Free Spins, all present Money symbol values will be collected and stored in a Cash Bag at the top right corner of the reel set.

The total value of the Cash Bag will be awarded to each Wild symbol that lands in view, without resetting the total value of the Cash Bag. The number of Money symbols that land are collected in a Meter at the bottom of the Cash Bag. For every 6 Wilds that land in view, +2 Free Spins are awarded.

If the maximum win capacity of 4,500x is reached, the Free Spins round will come to and end and all remaining Free Spins will be forfeited.

Black Bull: Our Verdict

Black Bull won’t be Pragmatic’s first rodeo with the North American aesthetic, and it probably won’t be their last. The North American Prairie is for some reason or another highly popular. In fact, the presence of them is overwhelming. With so many to try, it’s hard to stand out, and Black Bull certainly isn’t anything special in terms of visuals.

The music did a better job of making Black Bull a little more lively, but that in itself is nothing noteworthy either, to be honest.

In terms of gameplay, Black Bull has ample potential and lots of exciting moments in Free Spins, and the Base Game can perform too with its Money Collection Feature. The bulk of the excitement is reserved for the bonus round, as it should be, and the progression feature makes all the difference in transforming Black Bull from something fairly average into something potentially great.

Our definition of great might be different to yours though. The maximum win here is 4,500x, which is 500x lower than Pragmatic Play’s go-to figure, so you might not think too highly of what’s on offer if you’re accustomed to slots with much greater potential.

Overall, Black Bull isn’t the best of Pragmatic Pllay, but they’ve certainly released worse in the past.
