After exploring the vibrant Coral Creek seabed in the first Oxygen release in late 2023, ELK Studios took us on another deep dive into Oxygen 2 in early 2025. While the underwater theme remained intact, new Jellyfish & Octopus features added a fresh twist that helped bring the game back onto players’ radars.

With the Oxygen series ready to resurface, players are plunged back into Coral Creek with new mechanics, curious sea life, and plenty of surprises hidden below the surface…

Base Game & Features

Oxygen 3 is a highly volatile (7/10) slot with 6 reels, 7 rows, and a Cluster Pays mechanic. Winning clusters occur when 5-32 identical symbols connect either horizontally or vertically on the grid.

The Octopus is considered the highest-paying symbol, followed by the Purple, Green, & Blue Fish. Other symbols include 3 Coral Plants, which act as the lowest-paying symbols. After a spin is complete, each winning cluster awards a fixed payout between 0.1x and 250x your bet.

Each time a winning cluster is confirmed on the grid, the Avalanche Feature removes it, allowing new symbols to fill all empty positions from above. This continues for as long as there are winning clusters in the same spin. Occasionally, paytable symbols can appear in sizes 2×2, 3×3, or 4×4.

Multipliers & Strike Feature

The first time the Avalanche Feature happens, an Oxygen Bubble is activated. Every winning symbol that is removed over an existing Bubble Frame will double the Cell Multiplier. Each Cell Multiplier begins at x1, and Oxygen Bubbles are not affected by the Avalanche Feature.

Additionally, the Multiplier Strike feature places random clusters of Oxygen Bubbles with active Multipliers across the grid before symbols drop.

Clam Symbols

During gameplay, Clam symbols may appear anywhere on the grid, acting as Wilds that substitute for all paytable symbols. If a Clam symbol is part of a winning cluster, it will trigger 1 of 3 Clam Features after all wins are paid out:

• Starfish: Rotates until it points in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal direction, removing all paytable symbols in its path. All Feature symbols along its trail will be activated, and on the last position, the Starfish will increase the Multiplier.
• Squid: Begins a cycle behaviour where it generates a Wild symbol on its current position, which then moves to a new position before leaving the grid.
• Pearl: Chooses a random paytable symbol from the grid, which becomes sticky throughout this feature. After this, an Avalanche event occurs, where all other types of symbols drop out, and new symbols are dropped in from above. Further Avalanche events occur as long as the sticky symbol or Wilds appear, or until the grid is full of the chosen symbol.

Exploding & Blaster Wilds

Activating an Exploding Wild occurs when no more winning clusters appear in view. The explosion destroys all paytable symbols within 2 cone-shaped areas in a cross pattern, forcing paytable symbols to replenish.

Alternatively, Blaster Wilds trigger when part of a winning combination, which is affected by the explosion from an existing Blaster or Exploding Wild. Once active, the blast converts all paytable symbols with an ‘X’ or ‘+’ pattern, originating from the triggering Blaster Wild. Transformed symbols that were previously affected by another blast will be converted into Wilds.

Oxygen 3: Free Spins

Landing 3 Bonus Scatters anywhere on the grid triggers the Free Spins mode, awarding 10 Free Spins.

In this mode, a special Oxygen Meter is available, which is filled with winning combinations. Once full, the Oxygen Meter is emptied, triggering an upgrade to a random cluster of Cell Multipliers. Additionally, landing 3 Bonus Scatters, with one being a Super Scatter, triggers the Super Free Spins mode.

Super Free Spins

Once the Super Free Spins mode is active, a special Super Oxygen Meter becomes available, filling up each time a winning combination occurs. Once full, a larger cluster of Cell Multipliers is upgraded on the grid. Please note that both Oxygen Meter Levels persist throughout each session.

The Free Spins & Super Free Spins mode can be retriggered by landing 2 or 3 Bonus Scatters, which award an additional +3 and +5 Free Spins, respectively.

Eligible players may purchase any of the following X-iter Feature Buy options:

Our Honest Verdict

It’s always exciting to see a popular franchise return, but that also brings high expectations and a lot of pressure on the studio to pull out all the stops, especially when the first two releases helped define the series. So the real question is, was our third visit to Coral Creek a happy one?

Once again, our eyes are immediately drawn to the vibrant colours, lively sea creatures, and high-quality graphics & animations that have become a hallmark of ELK releases. While the backdrop has been given a clear makeover, the overall layout feels all too familiar.

The series has clearly evolved since its debut in 2023, and it’s not often we see this level of progression so early in a franchise, with Oxygen 2 having raised the bar for its Jellyfish & Octopus features. Oxygen 3 replaces those features with Clam symbols that introduce their own features, alongside the return of Exploding & Blaster Wilds.

There are also a few notable adjustments to the Free Spins mode, including the welcome addition of a Super Free Spins mode. Alongside persistent Multiplier Bubbles, every winning cluster fills the Oxygen Meter, and once it reaches capacity, a group of Cell Multipliers is increased.

Although this feature already tilts the odds toward bigger payouts, the Super Free Spins mode takes things even further. When the Oxygen Meter fills, a larger section of Cell Multipliers is upgraded, making the 25,000x max win more attainable.

All in all, Oxygen 3 shares the strengths & benefits of the series, offering fresh mechanics, enhanced Free Spins potential, and the same vibrant underwater charm that fans of Coral Creek have come to expect & enjoy.
