Everyone loves a sequel, right? That’s especially true in movies, particularly when the sequel is just as good, if not better, than the original. Well, the same can be said for an abundance of series within the iGaming industry.
Of all the software providers, ELK Studios has quite a history of creating a string of sequels and series within their impressive portfolio. Some of these include Toro, Taco Brothers, and Nitropolis, to name a few.
In this review, we’re checking out the latest Tropicool entry and its contents. With 3 previous instalments, it’s hard to fathom where ELK Studios will take the series next—let’s get stuck in and find out!
Base Game & Features
As with all previous titles of the series, Tropicool 4 is a bit of an oxymoron in a way, considering it’s a beach-themed slot that features plenty of ice. Once you come to terms with the theme, there’s quite a lot to unpack in terms of game elements.
This game features 6 reels with up to 6 rows per reel, which amounts to a maximum of 46,656 ways to win. In this game, in order to produce a winning combination, you simply need to match anywhere from 3 to 6 symbols anywhere on adjacent reels.
All of the paying symbols available in Tropicool 4 are represented by various fruits, with the plum being the lowest-paying symbol and the strawberry being the highest-paying symbol. The payouts for matching 3-6 plums range from 0.05x to 0.25x your bet, while the payouts for matching 3-6 strawberries range from 1x to 2x your bet.
There is also a Wild symbol available in this game, which substitutes for all paying symbols. Plus, there’s even a locked Wild symbol that will stay on the reels for the number of drops (spins) shown on the symbol. Other characteristics of note include a high volatility rating, a 94% RTP, and a 25,000x maximum win amount.
Big Symbols
Tropicool 4 features traditional symbols that take up one position on the reels and Big symbols that can take up multiple positions. The possible sizes of symbols in this game are 1×1, 2×2, or 3×3.
Feature Symbols
While playing Tropicool 4, you’ll notice that four different feature symbols can land on the reels, which are as follows:
- Mystery – reveals a symbol at the end of a drop.
- Grid Flip – flips the grid horizontally and becomes a wild symbol.
- Row Swap – 1 symbol will replace other symbols on the same row in which it lands with the exception of wild, feature, bonus, and character symbols.
- Multiplier – adds its value to the game’s global multiplier.
Character Symbols
In addition to the feature symbols noted above, Tropicool 4 also features the following character symbols:
- Elmo Drop – the Elmo sloth removes all payout symbols from multiple rows with a single action.
- Flamingo Wild – the flaming is a walking wild that generates free drops and increases in size for every step it takes until it reaches a total of 6 high.
- Toucan Multiplier – the toucan multiplier is a walking multiplier that increases the game’s global multiplier for every step it takes and also generates free drops.
Avalanche & Cool Reel
At the top of the reel grid, you’ll notice there are symbols present that are not part of the main reel grid. These symbols are part of the game’s Cool Reel, which is activated whenever a winning combination occurs.
After the win is paid out, all winning symbols explode from the reel and are replaced with new symbols that drop down from the cool reel (this is referred to as an avalanche).
X-iter
Thanks to Elk Studio’s popular X-iter feature, there are a total of 5 bonus buy options available in Tropicool 4, which are as follows:
- Bonus Hunt – for a cost of 3x your bet, you’ll have more than triple the chance of triggering the bonus game.
- Locked Wilds – for a cost of 25x your bet, you are guaranteed to land 3 locked wilds on your next drop.
- Both Birds – for a cost of 50x your bet, you are guaranteed to land both birds on your next drop.
- Bonus – for a cost of 100x your bet, you are guaranteed to trigger the bonus round with free drops.
- Super Bonus – for a cost of 500x your bet, you are guaranteed to trigger the bonus round with free drops and you’re also guaranteed an Elmo symbol in each drop.
Free Spins
Landing 3, 4, 5, or 6 Scatters in the base game triggers the Free Spins round, awarding 6, 9, 12, and 15 Free Spins respectively. During the bonus round, landing 3 or more additional bonus symbols will award additional Free Spins.
Our Verdict
If you enjoyed playing any of Elk Studio’s other games from the Tropicool series, then you’re certainly going to enjoy playing Tropicool 4. And if by chance you’ve never played any games in this series before, then you’re in for a real treat.
That’s because Tropicool 4 is a super-modern slot that is loaded with tons of great features. The main bonus round featuring free drops is obviously one of them, but there are also the character symbol features, the regular feature symbols, big symbols and the cool reel avalanche feature. Not to mention, this game has a whopping 25,000x maximum win amount, which is crazy lucrative for a high volatility slot with a 94% RTP.
