Base Game & Features
Gem Trio is a highly volatile instalment from Pragmatic Play, featuring 3 reels, 3 rows, and 9 fixed pay lines. Winning combinations reveal payouts between 0.3x and 7x your bet when 3 matching symbols land from left to right.
The 5 paytable symbols are represented by classic icons (triple 7s, double 7s, single 7s, double bar, and single bar). Win lines are also produced by landing a combination of any 7 or bar symbols on the reels.
Furthermore, the game has 2 individual Wild symbols and a single x3 Multiplier icon, which award the following:
- Red Wild: Awards a payout of 125x your bet for 3-of-a-kind, substituting for all symbols except Gems.
- Green Wild: Awards a payout of 50x your bet for 3-of-a-kind, substituting for all symbols except Gems.
- x3 Multiplier: Multiplies all winning combinations it is a part of by x3, except for combinations of any Wild symbol. Matching 3-of-a-kind will award a payout of 250x your bet.
Gem Symbols
When an Emerald, Diamond, or Ruby symbol appears, it is collected and stored within its respective meter above the reels. Each time this occurs, there is an increased chance of triggering a Free Spins mode.
The collection happens at the end of each spin, and if the Free Spins mode triggers, 1, 2, or 3 Modifiers are awarded at random. The subsequent Free Spins mode is played with all active Modifiers from the triggering spin active.
Bonus Buy
Depending on the jurisdiction, players within permissible regions can purchase up to 3 Bonus Buy options as follows:
- Option 1: Triggers a Free Spins mode with 1 of 3 Modifiers active for 50x your bet (RTP 96.50%)
- Option 2: Triggers a Free Spins mode with 2 of 3 Modifiers active for 100x your bet (RTP 96.51%)
- Option 3: Triggers a Free Spins mode with all 3 Modifiers guaranteed for 200x your bet (RTP 96.49%)
Gem Trio has a maximum win capacity of 20,000x your bet. If a game round exceeds this figure, the current mode will end, and the player returns to the base game with the full amount.
Gem Trio Free Spins
When a Gem symbol has triggered its respective Meter above the reels, 10 Free Spins are awarded, along with at least 1 Modifier (subject to the Gem meter). Depending on which Free Spins mode was triggered, one of the following Modifiers will activate for the entire round:
- Emerald Modifier: Each gem that hits in this round will award +1 or +2 Free Spins.
- Diamond Modifier: Activates 4 Jackpot Prizes of Mini (20x), Minor (50x), Major (300x), and Grand (10,000x). When 4 of any Jackpot Prize is collected, its respective prize is awarded.
- Ruby Modifier: Activates two 3×3 grids, with +10 Free Spins for each.
It should be noted that multiple Free Spins modes can be triggered in the same spin, awarding any combination of Modifiers from the above options, depending on which Gem combination triggers.
Our Honest Verdict
After spinning the reels of Gem Trio by Pragmatic Play, we’re at the conclusion that it’s another generic ‘3 pots’ collection slot with a basic Jackpot feature, limited pay lines, and even fewer reels.
The classic/retro aesthetic certainly gives clues as to the nature of gameplay, but the 3-reel format came as a bit of a surprise. Unlike Master Gems, this game has a little more to give, but it still fails to deliver that rush of excitement we usually get from a Pragmatic Play title.
The base game is fixed with a small selection of classic symbols, with few features available besides the opportunity to connect Wilds and x3 Multipliers within the same win line.
If this is something you feel you’d enjoy, then you’ll find comfort in Gem Trio. Otherwise, you’ll be better off investing in a game like 3 Magic Pots, which has so much to offer in the base game, in addition to each Free Spins mode.
What we find hard to believe is the max win potential of 20,000x your bet. This figure, combined with a high RTP of 96.50% and a 5/5 volatility score, generates a certain amount of appeal to players; however, it’s not enough to stop us veering towards another slot with more variety.
All in all, Gem Trio fails to meet our high expectations for a Pragmatic Play slot. The game has its moments of excitement and a sizable max win potential of 20,000x your bet, but it’s not enough to keep us invested for long.
