Following its predecessor’s footsteps, Sun Princess graces us with the popular Cluster Pays mechanic, which is a rarity for Hacksaw Gaming, who are typically known for their unusual number of pay lines, but one we’re certainly grateful for.

Base Game & Features
Sun Princess is a medium volatility, 7×7 Video Slot from Hacksaw Gaming with a Cluster Pays mechanic. Winning clusters are established when 5-49 matching symbols land horizontally or vertically adjacent on the grid.
The game reveals 10 paytable symbols, with the highest-paying symbol falling to the Red Crown, offering payouts between 1x and 10,000x your bet. The 9 remaining symbols award payouts between 0.1x and 2,500x your bet, where applicable.
Additionally, Wild symbols appear anywhere on the grid, substituting for all paytable symbols when completing a winning cluster. In other news, Sun Ray Frames cannot appear upon FS scatters.
Sun Ray Frames
In the base game, a special Sun Ray Frame can appear atop any Low-paying symbol or Wild. After all winning clusters have been applied, the Sun Ray Frame will activate.
Once active, the Sun Ray Frame will spread in a straight line across paytable symbols, transforming them into the same paytable symbol the Sun Ray Frame originally appeared upon.
A Sun Ray Frame can spread in 2-4 directions, if there is space to do so, vertically & horizontally, depending on where the original Sun Ray Frame appears. A vertical Sun Ray Frame will travel from its current position towards the edge of the grid, whilst a horizontal Sun Ray Frame will spread from its original position to the right & left edges of the grid.
Alternatively, a 4-point Sun Ray Frame will travel from its position, covering all upward, downward, right, & left positions within its path until it touches the edge of the grid. After completion, all wins from the new clusters are instantly awarded.
If a Sun Ray Frame crosses paths with a Wild symbol, it will initiate a x2 Multiplier, which is applied to any wins as a result of the Sun Ray Frame. Each time a new Sun Ray Frame comes into contact with a Multiplier Wild, its value increases by +x2.
If there is more than 1 Multiplier Wild in the same winning cluster, their values are added together before being applied to the win. Please note that only 1 Sun Ray Frame can land at the start of each spin.
Chain Reaction
Throughout gameplay, if a Sun Ray Frame crosses paths with a Low-paying, High-paying, or Wild symbol of the same type, it will trigger a Chain Reaction. Once active, a Sun Ray Frame will appear on the second symbol, causing it to spread to another, depending on the original position of the Sun Ray Frame.
Sun Princess Free Spins
The Solaris Grove Bonus triggers when 3 FS Scatters appear in the base game, awarding 10 Free Spins. Throughout this mode, the original mechanics from the base game are maintained, with an increased chance of landing Sun Ray Frames.
Finally, landing 2 or 3 FS Scatters awards an additional +2 and +4 Free Spins, respectively.
Sunfire Palace
The Sunfire Palace Bonus requires 4 FS Scatters to land in the base game, awarding 10 Free Spins. Again, this bonus maintains the same mechanics from Solaris Grove and the base game.
When a Sun Ray Frame spreads through a Wild symbol, it activates a x2 Multiplier which becomes sticky on the grid until the end of the feature. Each time a Sun Ray Frame crosses paths with an active Multiplier Wild, its value will increment by +x2.
Finally, landing 2 or 3 FS Scatters awards a further +2 and +4 Free Spins, respectively.
Golden Eclipse
The final Bonus, Golden Eclipse, is classified as a Hidden Bonus, triggered when 5 FS Scatters land within the base game, awarding 10 Free Spins. Sticking to the same mechanics from Sunfire Palace, this mode guarantees at least 1 Sun Ray Frame per spin.
Having 2 or 3 FS Scatters fall in the same spin awards an additional +2 and +4 Free Spins, respectively.

Sun Princess has a maximum win potential of 10,000x your bet. If a single session exceeds this figure, the current mode ends, and the player returns to the base game with the qualifying amount.
Our Honest Verdict
Of the 3 ‘Princess’ instalments available, Sun Princess has to be the most glowing of the series, but does that same courtesy extend to gameplay? We believe so. Although the Cluster Pays mechanic is readily available in many slots, it’s rather unusual for a Hacksaw Gaming release.
Only a handful of Hacksaw games are privileged to receive the Cluster Pays mechanic, but it fails to meet the expectations here, due to the lack of an Avalanche Feature. This, however, may be easily overlooked thanks to the alluring visuals and engaging content Sun Princess possesses.
Hacksaw Gaming indeed have a fascination with spreading & expanding things across the reels of their games, and Sun Princess is no different. If you’re able to catch the Sun Ray Frames in the right light, they can spread across the reels, transforming symbols within their path and creating winning clusters.
Due to the lack of an Avalanche Feature, the Chain Reaction event becomes quite an important piece of gameplay. While the Sun Ray Frame can spread in single directions, having it spread across all 4 ways will lead to higher potential and bigger payouts.
Although there are ways to retrieve Multipliers, it’s not quite as straightforward as Bullets and Bounty, where you’re always guaranteed to one or the other when the VS symbol expands. A x2 Multiplier is given to the triggering Wild symbol when a Sun Ray Frame crosses its path, and can only upgrade when further Sun Ray Frames cross it again in the same spin.
Given how challenging it can be to trigger a Free Spins mode in Hacksaw games, this particular attribute feels a little harsh in comparison to others within their portfolio. Still, there’s light at the end of the tunnel in the form of 10,000x your bet, which is on par with its predecessors.
All in all, Sun Princess is the shining light of the series, thematically, but it remains on the same page as its sibling slots for its features & mechanics.
