After many years spent pondering what happened to the legendary Green Knight, Play’n GO returns him to battle once more in their latest Arthurian Legends tale, The Green Knight: Oath of Thorns.
After pondering the outcome of his last endeavour in Return of the Green Knight, we’re pleased to see the Green Knight resurface in what has now become a trilogy series. Next on our agenda is defeating the mysterious thorn creature, which, as of now, was all but a myth.
With a fixed RTP of 96.27% and a mid-high volatility score, can our heroic Knight in shining armour save us from the entanglements of the thorn creature? Let’s find out.
Base Game & Features
The Green Knight: Oath of Thorns is a mid-high volatility release from Play’n GO, featuring 5 reels, 3 rows, and 20 fixed pay lines. Winning combinations are guaranteed when 3 or more identical symbols appear on adjacent reels, starting from reel 1.
There are 9 paytable symbols available, 4 high-paying and 5 low-paying, each fixed with a direct payout between 0.2x and 25x your bet when part of a winning pay line. High-paying symbols are represented by Characters, while low-paying symbols fall to A, K, Q, J, & 10 card suits.
Furthermore, Wild symbols reveal a random payout of 2.5x, 5x, and 100x their bet for 3, 4, or 5-of-a-kind. When in view, Wild symbols substitute for all paytable symbols except Scatters.
Sword Meter & Multiplier Wilds
Above the main reel set is a special Sword Meter with 4 Multiplier Prizes of x2, x5, x10, x25, and x100. This feature triggers at random during any spin in the base game or Free Spins mode.
Once active, it will flick through all 4 Multiplier Prizes until it stops on one, which is then applied to all Wild symbols that fall onto the reels during the triggering spin. All winning combinations with Multiplier Wilds will have their total amount multiplied by the respective value.
The payouts for each Multiplier Wild group are as follows:
- x2 Multiplier: Between 5x and 200x your bet
- x5 Multiplier: Between 12.5x and 500x your bet
- x10 Multiplier: Between 25x and 1,000x your bet
- x25 Multiplier: Between 62.5x and 2,500x your bet
- x100 Multiplier: Between 250x and 10,000x your bet
The Green Knight: Oath of Thorns Free Spins
Triggering the Free Spins mode requires 3 or more Scatters to land in the base game, awarding 5 Free Spins and a fixed payout of 2.5x, 5x, and 100x your bet, respectively.
During this round, the Sword Meter will flick through each available Multiplier, in order of how they appear on the meter. This feature applies its Multiplier to all Wild symbols in view on the reels, as seen in the base game.
If 2 or more Scatter symbols land on the reels at this time, it will award +5 Thorn Spins at the current Sword Meter multiplier. During this time, 2-3 Multiplier Wilds are guaranteed to land on the reels during each Thorn Spin.
Please note that Scatter symbols do not appear during Thorn Spins. At the end of Thorn Spins, the game resumes regular Free Spins, with the potential to trigger Thorn Spins multiple times.
Our Honest Verdict
After a brief pause between releases, Play’n GO returns with one of our much-loved Arthurian Legends tales, allowing us to relive the promising Sword Meter, iconic aesthetics, and quality graphics once again.
One thing we’ll always appreciate in a Play’n GO release is the great lengths they go to create top-quality artwork and aesthetics – you only have to load up this game to see what we’re referring to, which is indicative of a chef’s kiss.
Although it’s great to see a respected character return to the big screen, it’s also pleasant to see certain characteristics and traits follow along, too. Each release of this series, so far, has one common denominator – the Sword Meter, which has made its grand entrance once again in this instalment.
What’s interesting is that Play’n GO has made no improvements to the Multiplier Prizes within it, keeping the x100 Multiplier as the highest in this feature. What they have done, however, is double up on spins during the Free Spins mode, via a special Thorn Spins feature.
This feature allows players to enjoy 5 Thorn Spins with the current Sword Multiplier locked, before returning to regular Free Spins. As the meter progresses through the Multipliers, things get even more tense at the prospect of triggering Thorn Spins with the x100 Multiplier active.
Even though this game is just as action-packed and exciting as its predecessors, we’ve rated it lower for its 14,000x max win potential, among other things. You’re probably wondering what’s wrong with this figure, right? Well, when compared to the 40,000x max win in Return of the Green Knight, it’s quite a low blow and a big loss.
All in all, The Green Knight: Oath of Thorns revives our love and appreciation for an old classic, but it fails to live up to the high expectations that come with a new series addition.
