🔥 Hot: DoubleMax
We said no naming names, but in this case, it’s high praise for Yggdrasil Gaming and DoubleMax.
It’s one of those mechanics that feels like it actually adds something new, rather than just re-skinning what we’ve already seen a hundred times before.
At its core, it’s pretty simple – land consecutive wins and the multipliers double every time, with no real ceiling in sight. Paired with cascading reels, and it’s a match made in heaven.
What we like most is how it rewards momentum. Instead of each spin feeling one and done, it feels like you’re building towards something as one hit snowballs into another… and another, without relying on a bonus round to keep things exciting.
This keeps the base game engaging, which is where we see a lot of slots fall short. Where it gets going, it can really take off, and that’s the kind of unpredictability we want from a slot – keeping us on our toes.
❌ Not: Hold & Spin
It has to be said that Hold & Spin is a classic slot mechanic that has its place in the history books, but there’s only so much you can do with it.
After a while, these games start to feel a little… samey.
You’ve likely seen it all before: land a set number of bonus symbols, the reels lock, and you’ve got a few spins to fill the screen while values tick up.
The biggest issue we’ve found is that a lot of Hold & Spin bonuses fall flat, resulting in dead spins unless you hit a good setup early on.
Too many sessions end with a half-filled screen and a payout that doesn’t quite match the buildup and anticipation.
It’s not broken, but right now, Hold & Spin is starting to feel a little overdone, and struggling to give us that wow factor.
🔥 Hot: Ante Bets
Ante Bets are a little like Marmite – you either love it or you hate it.
For us, though, they’re a big hit, especially when we’re streaming.
The idea is simple: increase your stake slightly, and in return, you boost your chances of triggering bonus features or getting better setups. More risk, but more opportunity.
While slots are primarily luck-based, this allows us more control instead of just crossing our fingers and hoping that the base game delivers.
It puts the pacing directly into your hands and cuts down that long grind where it’s just dead spin after dead spin.
Ante Bets are especially streamer-friendly, allowing for more edge-of-the-seat action when our team are live on Kick and YouTube. And if you’re here for the features (and let’s be honest, who wouldn’t be?), Ante Bets get you there faster.
❌ Not: Misleading Scatter SFX
One of our pet peeves, whether we’re live on stream or playing in our free time is misleading scatter SFX.
You know the ones: you land two scatters, that gradual sound effect kicks in, the music builds, you’re on the edge of your seat… and then, nothing. No third scatter. No bonus.
It’s the audio equivalent of a tease, and once you notice it, it’s hard to ignore.
Instead of building genuine excitement, it starts feeling just a little bit cheap, especially when it keeps happening, like the game’s trying to force-feed you hype that isn’t even there.
Don’t get us wrong, scatter SFX are great for anticipation when it’s actually warranted, but there’s a fine line between tension and creating a getting a slots version of blue balls.
🔥 Hot: Trail-Style Progression Systems
There’s a reason why things like the Tesco Clubcard are so popular – it encourages loyalty as account holders are more likely to come back, continue stacking up their points, and see what’s new to avoid FOMO.
This might sound unrelated but we promise there’s a correlation.
This same formula has been applied to slots through “trail-style” progression systems, designed to encourage players to return and continue their campaign – almost like a slots version of Dungeons & Dragons.
In these types of titles, players can essentially save their progress, giving them a reason to return to the game exactly as they left it – including any additional game modifiers or enhancers they unlocked previously.
These games are great because you skip the repetitive grind and it makes you feel like you’re working towards something, giving you all the endorphins.
❌ Not: Copy and Paste Bonus Spins
This is another thing we see a lot when we’re streaming and it never fails to disappoint… Copy and paste bonus spins.
These are the games where you’ve worked hard to land those scatters, and it feels like something big is coming. The bonus lands… and it’s basically the base game all over again.
Same mechanics, same idea, just slightly re-skinned so it looks different visually. There’s no real shift in gameplay, no added depth, and nothing that makes it feel like a true reward for getting there – which is what a free spins bonus should be.
Bonus rounds should feel like an achievement unlocked and a step up – new features, higher stakes, bigger wins, but with these, it just feels like the game has trussed you up like a prize pig and taken you for a ride.
When we run into these types of games, it takes the edge off the entire experience. If the bonus doesn’t feel special, what even is the point?
Final Thoughts
There you have it – our second edition of Hot or Not, showing off a few of our favourites, frustrations, and some (probably) unpopular opinions that won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.
Of course, slots are all about personal preference.
What doesn’t quite hit the spot for us might be exactly what someone else is looking for, and that’s the beauty of it – there’s always something new to try.
If you want to test the waters without fully committing, we now have free slot demos available across the site, so you can try some of these mechanics out for yourself to see what clicks for you.
And if you want to take things a step further, it’s always worth checking our our in-depth reviews, too, where we break down everything from the RTP to bonus features, so you know exactly what to expect before you spin.
