Lordi Reel Monsters Slot Review 2024

Mr Lordi and his band of monsters are summoning all Demons of the night to join them on their rampage of rock, in Play’n GO’s latest release, Lordi Reel Monsters!

Lordi is a popular heavy metal/rock band in Finland, which was formed in 1992 by the lead singer and costume designer Mr Lordi, aka Tomi Petteri Putaansuu. The premium symbols seen here each represent band members, dressed in their best Monster attire. There is no denying that Lordi is the Finnish version of Slipknot.

The band soon grew in fame in 2006 after winning the Eurovision Song Contest with their song, ‘Hard Rock Hallelujah’, which if you haven’t heard yet, you soon will over and over again during Gameplay. If you’re not a fan of heavy metal, you may just want to mute this slot or stay clear altogether.

Play’n GO has definitely adapted this slot to fit the bands very unique tastes, with the background displaying a dark, foggy and wet night in a Graveyard. To top it off, Play’n GO has delivered fantastic and slightly creepy sound effects that go well with the gothic theme.

We’ve seen everything there is to see in terms of theme, but what horrors await us in Gameplay? Let’s play on and find out!

Lordi Reel Monsters Base Game and Features

Lordi Reel Monsters is a 7×7 Video Slot with a Cluster Pays mechanic. In order to form a winning combination, you will need to connect 5 or more of the same symbol type either Horizontally or Vertically.

Lordi Reel Monsters features Tumbling Reels. Each time a winning combination is formed, all winning symbols will be removed from the grid and new symbols will drop down via a Tumble, filling all empty positions and possibly creating even more winning combinations.

Very similar to Play’n GO’s Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness, Lordi Reel Monsters has a Monster Charger that awards thrilling monster Modifiers when filled. This feature is not exactly a new occurrence, but it is one that delivers much-needed excitement to an otherwise boring base game.

Monster Charger

The Monster Charger on the right of the screen requires a certain amount of winning symbols to activate. The Monster Charger has 2 Charge Levels, with 15 winning symbols needed to activate 1 of 5 Monster Modifiers and a full 40 winning symbols to trigger Free Spins. Each winning symbol acts as +1 charge for the Monster Charger.

Once the Monster Charger reaches 15 winning symbols, one of the band members will be chosen at random to deliver a unique Modifier. These are as follows.

  • Mr Lordi – Adds between 5 and 8 Wilds in random positions onto the grid.
  • Hella – Protects between 1 and 2 symbol types, including Wilds and destroys the rest.
  • Amen – Transforms between 2 and 5 symbol types into different high or low-paying symbols.
  • Hiisi – Selects a random symbol and builds up a winning cluster.
  • Mana – Chooses a random symbol type and transforms them into Wilds.

Lordi Reel Monsters Free Spins

Once the Monster Charger reaches 40 winning symbols, the Free Spins round is triggerd, awarding 1 Free Spin. You will be given a choice of 2 Free Spin rounds, which are as follows.

  • Reel Monsters – This option applies a Multiplier, starting at +1 and increases with each Tumble. In addition to this, this option guarantees 2 Monster Modifiers.
  • Better Hate than Never – During this round, all winning Wilds that land are collected and 3 Monster Modifiers are guaranteed. Once all monster Modifiers have played out, all collected Wilds are placed back onto the grid. All wins are counted and more Wilds are added. This round will continue until all Wilds are used.

Lordi Reel Monsters: Our Verdict

We can see a pattern ermerging here with Play’n GO and their growing portfolio of branded slots. It should be noted that Play’n GO only ever seem to opt for hard rock/heavy metal bands, so if you’re not a metalhead in the slighest, you may want to dodge this one altogether.

If you’re not accustomed to the band Lordi or their songs, it won’t take you long to get acquainted considering Play’n GO has chosen their hit single, ‘Hard Rock Hallelujah’ to play on a loop during Gameplay. Metalhead or not, Play’n GO will have you muttering the words to this song in no time.

The Monster Charger seen here is very similar in style to the Hat of Madness feature in Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madess, only this version see’s the other band members take an active roll in delivering exciting Modifiers, unique to themselves. Another plus is that it’s not overly difficult to reach the Free Spins level, with only 40 winning symbols needed to secure it.

So you finally reach the Free Spins round, to be given a choice of 2 options, none of which you can get too excited about seeing as you only get 1 Free Spin. Can a lot happen in 1 Free Spin? Probably not, but Play’n GO are pretty confident that 1 Free Spin is all you will need. Both Free Spin options have a lot of potential to offer, but we probably won’t get to see them in full swing.

Statistically, Lordi Reel Monsters has a solid RTP of 96.20% and a slightly disappointing maximum win capacity of 4,000x. It’s such a shame to see a slot that has everything going for it in terms of design and theme, yet fails to deliver in potential.

Overall, we’re still of the opinion that Play’n GO are at their best when they’re working with completely original ideas, but as far as their branded range goes, Lordi certainly looks a lot better than previous titles.
