Derby Wheel is certainly a far cry from the Egyptian themes Play’n GO has been pumping out recently, but it’s not a theme that hasn’t been touched upon before by other Providers. The background shows a stage where spotlights are well and truly fixed on the Derby Wheel, along with crowds of people watching and waiting on either side. The background is not the most thrilling we’ve seen and in some ways reminds us of a catwalk, which is ironic given that we are here to judge.

Will Derby Wheel shine bright under the spotlight? Let’s play on and find out!

Derby Wheel Base Game

Derby Wheel Base Game and Features

Derby Wheel is a 3 reel slot with 5 fixed paylines. In order to form a winning combination, you will need to connect 3 of the same symbol types from left to right, starting from the left-most reel. The minimum bet available here is £/€0.05 per spin and the maximum bet available is £/€100 per spin, with a small selection of bets in between the two.

In terms of symbols, Derby Wheel only has 5 symbols present. The 7 symbol has the highest pay value, followed by the Bar symbol, Cherries, Plums and Lemons. There are no Wild symbols present in Derby Wheel, but there is a Scatter symbol in the form of a Wheel, which unlocks both Bonus rounds.

Derby Wheel doesn’t have much in the way of Features, but Play’n GO hasn’t left you without, with two thrilling Bonus rounds up for grabs. In order to trigger one of the following Bonus rounds, you will need to land 3 Scatters across the reels. Scatters appear as Wheels and are split into Two Sections, one half triggers the Horse Racing round and the other triggers the Big Wheel feature.

Horse Racing

The Horse Racing Bonus round can be triggered in 1 of 2 ways, either by triggering it through the Scatter Wheel as above or through the Big Wheel, which we will look into after this.

Before the Horse Race can begin, you will be given 4 Options to choose from, these are as follows.

  • No Bet – Choosing this option skips the Horse Race, awarding a payout of 40x your current bet.
  • Win – If you choose this option, you will be able to Pick 1 of the 4 Horses as your winning Horse, winning up to x268 your current bet. This is a Low Volatility option.
  • Exacta – If you choose this option, you will be able to Pick 2 of the 4 Horses you think will finish 1st and 2nd place, winning up to 1,090x your current bet. This is a Medium Volatility option.
  • Trifecta – If you choose this option, you will be able to Pick 3 of the 4 Horses you think will finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, winnning up to 2,239x your current bet. This is a High Volatility option.

Big Wheel

The Big Wheel feature is awarded when the Scatter Wheel lands on the Big Wheel section. Once active, youwill be give 1 Free Spin on the Big Wheel for a chance to win either a Cash Prize or the Horse Racing bonus round.

There are a total of 15 individual Segments on the Big Wheel, with random Cash Prizes up for grabs, up to 200x your current bet.

Derby Wheel Horse Racing Round

Derby Wheel: Our Verdict

Derby Wheel was certainly unexpected, and definitely not typical, but how good a choice is it for Horse Racing fans and Play’n GO fans alike?

The theme for this one is a strange culmination of glamorous lights, dazzling reels, a packed audience and…mechanical horses and riders that looks like they belong in the Tron universe? We’re not entirely sure what was going through Play’n GO’s minds when this one went from a mere concept to an actual game, but its safe to say it’s a rather strange one. Play’n GO hasn’t given any particular care to Derby Wheel in terms of audio, so it can feel quiet, boring, and not consistent with the visuals they’ve made.

Are the audience just extremely bored? or did Play’n GO just skimp out when it came to audio? We’re not sure, but let’s turn our attention to the gameplay.

Derby Wheel certainly isn’t Play’n GO’s finest moment, but we wouldn’t say its their worst. The 3 reel format might bore those who are acclimatised to more diverse gameplay, but things certainly can be exciting when the Big Wheel comes into play.

Prizes of up to 200x are up for grabs if you land on the half of the wheel that simply offers cash prizes, but that’s the best you can hope for in this feature. If you land the Horse Racing feature then things can get a little more interesting, however.

Prediciting the outcome of a race is certainly a change of pace from your usual bonus round, and it can be fun to play around with the choices to see what the payout will be if you’re correct. 4 Choices are given too, with Win, Exacta, Trifecta and the weird ‘No Bet’ Choice.

The no bet choice gives you a guaranteed 40x win, but why would you pick it? Surely if you’ve invested time and money into the game then you’re going to want to try your luck with the Low, Medium or High Volatility options for x268, x1090 or x2239 your bet?

It baffles us, but perhaps some would just prefer to take their x40 win and leave for a more interesting game?

To summarise, Derby Wheel is certainly interesting, and it can even be entertaining at times, but it’s nothing too special.
