Toro Shogun Slot Review 2024
Toro and Matador are making their first appearance of 2023 and this time we’re heading to Japan in ELK Studios‘ latest release, Toro Shogun!
After ensuring the safety of the Golden Buffalos, on his journey home Toro stumbles across an elderly Japanese man whose dying wish is to return the long-lost artefact, the Heart of Fuji, to its home in the secret temple of the Jade Valley on the slopes of Mount Fuji.
Taking it upon himself to aid the Japanese man in his endeavours, Toro who is now appointed Shogun changes into his hakama and heads off to Japan.
It doesn’t take long for Matador to catch wind of Toro’s plan and sets off to Japan to wreak havoc in a bid to claim the Heart of Fuji for himself.
ELK Studios are rekindling our love for their beloved Toro and Matador characters for a 6th time, but is it to be the last in the series? Like the Fast n Furious movies, after the 3rd instalment, it tends to get a little tedious, but there is something truly special about the Toro series and we can’t wait to see where ELK Studios takes the series next.
Will Toro be able to return the Heart of Fuji to where it belongs, without a menacing Matador getting in his way? Let’s play on and find out!
Toro Shogun Base Game and Features
Toro Shogun is a 5-reel slot with up to 1,328 ways to win. Winning combinations are formed when 3 or more of the same symbols land from left to right, starting from the leftmost reel. When the Both Ways feature is active, the reels pay from both left to right and right to left.
The minimum bet available here is £.€0.20 per spin and the maximum bet available is £.€100 per spin, with plenty of other options in between the two. This game has a theoretical RTP of 94.00% and a max win cap of 25,000x.
In terms of symbols, the highest-paying regular symbol here is the Elderly Man, followed by the Lotus Flower, Fan, and Orange. Low-paying symbols fall to Red, Green, and Blue Dragon Tiles. Wild substitute for all High and Low-paying symbols from the paytable.
Each time a winning combination is formed, all winning symbols will be removed from the reels, leaving behind at least 1 Wild symbol. New symbols will drop down from above, filling all empty positions on the reels, increasing the reel heights, up to a maximum of 10 high.
Toro Walking Wild
Landing a Toro symbol during the base game will trigger the Walking Wild feature, generating Respins.
Once active, Toro will move one position to the left with each new Respin, or when contributing towards a winning combination. Toro will continue to move to a new position until he reaches the leftmost reel.
Toro Goes Wild
Landing both a Toro and Matador symbol on the same spin, or 1 or more Matador symbols whilst a Toro symbol is in play will trigger the Toro Goes Wild feature.
During this feature, Toro will first travel Vertically then sideways toward the Matador symbol(s), knocking all present Matador symbols from their position, leaving Wilds in his path.
Toro will continue on his rampage until all Matador symbols are defeated and removed from the reels. Toro will first begin by attacking all Matador symbols on the same reel, then moving on to other Matador symbols on his left, and then finally his right side.
Matador Respin
Landing 2 or more Matador symbols across the reels triggers the Matador Respin feature, awarding 1 Respin. During this time, all present Matador symbols will lock into their position, becoming Sticky.
If during the Respin, another Matador symbol should land, +1 additional Respin will be awarded and the new Matador symbol will also become sticky.
If no more Matador symbols land or the Toro symbol fails to make an appearance, the Matador Respin will end. Landing a Toro symbol during this time will automatically trigger the Toro Goes Wild feature.
Shogun Mode
Shogun mode will automatically activate when all 5 reels reach their maximum height of 10 rows. Once active, the 3 lowest-paying symbols from the paytable will be removed from play until the end of the spin.
Toro Shogun Free Spins
Landing 3 Scatters on reels 1, 3, and 5 triggers the Free Spins round, awarding 7 Free Spins.
During Free Spins, landing a number of Scatters will increase the Bonus Multiplier by +x1, which is applied to all winning combinations that occur during this round.
- 1 Scatter – Adds 1x to the Bonus Multiplier.
- 2 Scatters – Adds 2x to the Bonus Multiplier.
- 3 Scatters – Adds 3x to the Bonus Multiplier and an additional +7 Free Spins.
Triggering the Free Spins round during Shogun Mode will award the Shogun Bonus. The Shogun Bonus is a Free Spins round that is played in Shogun Mode the entire time.
Toro Shogun X-iter
Those outside the UK will benefit from ELK Studios’ popular X-iter Bonus Buy mode. ELK Studios has granted players access to a number of exciting Bonus Buy options, as follows.
- Shogun Bonus – Triggers the Shogun Bonus round for a total cost of 500x your bet.
- Buy Bonus – Triggers the Free Spins round for a total cost of 100x your bet.
- Shogun Spin – Triggers a base game spin with the maximum number of rows, Shogun Mode, and the Both Ways feature active for a total cost of 25x your bet.
- Toro Spin – Guarantees at least 1 Toro symbol to land in view for a total cost of 10x your bet.
- Bonus Hunt – More than triples your chance of triggering the Free Spins round for a total cost of 3x your bet.
Toro Shogun: Our Verdict
Toro Shogun is another multi-cultural adventure for ELK’s bovine beast, and another to impress with its innovative mechanics.
The Toro series has been quite varied so far, with classic, book style and other renditions to make the experience more varied each time. Toro Shogun certainly feels quite new, even if it does utilise features that ELK commonly implement within some of their other games.
In typical ELK fashion, there are plenty of features to keep you occupied before you even get to Free Spins, and once you do the excitement really picks up with a game round that keeps Toro in Shogun mode for the duration of Free Spins.
Features look great, and so do the statistics with up to 25,000x as a maximum win. RTP doesn’t look so great at 94%, however, but this is a reality that we’ve come to expect from new ELK slots, and they’re not the only ones with RTP on the lower side these days.
Overall, Toro Shogun felt like it was carefully nurtured, and it’ll be sure to impress ELK Studios fans, of which there are many.
