Invaders Takeover Slot Review
Aliens are a hot topic right now. Only weeks ago prominent US figures were hauled before Congress to lift the lid on apparent UFO encounters they had experienced first-hand, while it seems not a day goes by without a flurry of alleged sightings doing the rounds (why is it that aliens only seem to appear in US skies? Anyway).
Either looking to capitalise on the swell of commotion around the topic or simply aiming to flex their creative muscles, industry veteran Light & Wonder present the madcap world of Invaders Takeover where – you guessed it – invaders in the form of bulging-eyed, Martian-like creatures have made a stop off at planet earth intent on invading our blessed home equipped with an arsenal of familiar features to aid them in their intergalactic quest.
We say familiar since Invaders Takeover is essentially a reskin job of a former Light & Wonder release, Wild Outlaws – one which did little to set the slot world alight. Will this follow-up make more of a planet-sized impact or disappear into a black hole? Only one way to find out. Prepare to enter a weird and wonderful habitat populated by floating cows and alien-like beings with our detailed review
Invaders Takeover Base Game and Features
Hovering somewhere in outer space is where we find Invaders Takeover’s game matrix consisting of 6 reels and 4 rows accommodating 4,096 winning ways for the purposes of payout calculations. A highly volatile engine churns away under the hood, generating an industry average default RTP of 96.1%.
As to paytable symbols, expect to find regular playing card ranks running 9-A in place of the low pays, complemented by a cow, an alien, a scientist, and finally the game logo which yields wins equal to 10x your stake at most. Invaders Takeover also comes with a Wild symbol able to replace all regular symbols when dropping on reels 2-5 exclusively.
Alien Attack Bonus
Far from posing a threat to the very existence of humanity, the game’s Alien Attack Bonus may swell your returns on occasion for landing 2 Scatters together. Look out for the words ‘Threat Detected’, which signifies a successful bonus trigger.
Once activated, the two triggering scatters transform into wild symbols, before a laser then transforms 3-5 regular symbols on each outer reel into wilds, too.
Free Spins
Catching a trio of scatters during a base game spin represents your gateway to Free Spins where players first pick 1 of 3 Planets for each scatter. Once selected, each planet reveals your starting Free Spins haul upon exploding, with the round kicking off in earnest once all 3 have been processed.
The game panel is dynamic in Free Spins, expanding to incorporate an additional 4 cells above reels 2 to 5 which only come into play once activated. Should a wild symbol drop on any of these reels, a payout is calculated before the wild moves to occupy the vacant position thereby becoming active while also remaining sticky for the remainder of the feature.
Additionally, extra wilds landing on each reel come bearing multiplier values equal to the number of Wilds locked on that reel. Where wild symbols share the same winline their values are multiplied together before being applied to the line win, and on a final note, retriggers can be earned by landing 3 further scatters.
Premium Play
Jurisdiction permitting, Premium Play is initiated by augmenting your wager amount by 50%. Now, if you should land a win worth 1.6x your bet or more during the base game, the feature activates prompting a Space Wheel to show up offering rewards equal to 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x your bet, or Free Spins.
Landing a multiplier boosts your triggering base game win by the corresponding value and, naturally, Free Spins are awarded if you land on this segment.
Note that it’s not possible to trigger the Space Wheel during Free Spins, and where both the Space Wheel and Gamble feature trigger at once, the Space Wheel does its thing before the Gamble Feature takes over. More about this option below.
Gamble Feature
How’s your luck? The Gamble Feature comes into play if two conditions are in place: the feature is active and you hit a 5x base bet or 2.5x Premium Bet win. Free Spins and instant cash rewards are up for grabs via wheels split into green and red segments.
Invaders Takeover: Our Verdict
Invaders Takeover packs a certain measure of charm owing to its stock of floating cows and blue-eyed aliens dotted about the place, all rendered in cute cartoon-like graphics. Premium Play and a Gamble extra are also nice touches. Yet the game failed to wow on various levels.
For one, it’s a straight-up clone of the aforementioned Wild Outlaws. Sadly, simply swapping a Wild West wrapper for an altogether otherworldly coating has done little to lift the game out of ‘OK’ status with its low-frills features and slightly dated appearance.
Some street cred is regained for the lofty 14,596x max win which could yet blast you into orbit and which compares favourably with industry contemporaries like Space Invaders, but still lacking behind some of the bigger hitters in the space genre.
Summed up, this ain’t a terrible game by any means, but one unlikely to leave a lasting impression amid the vast galaxy of alternative outer space offerings.
