Rise of Cleopatra by Red Tiger tells a story told a million times before, and brings about yet another entry into the crowded yet popular Egyptian slot market.
The original Cleopatra by IGT remains perhaps the most prominent, featuring the Queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom, but others, like Charlie Chance and the Curse of Cleopatra, Eye of Cleopatra and of course the loveable Cleocatra have depicted her in their own way.
None quite touch IGT’s popular instalment, popular in part because of its presence in land-based casinos and clubs around the world…but can Rise of Cleopatra?
Probably not, many studios have tried, but none have prevailed.
Still, as the great Steve McManaman said, We’ll have a look, of course, we’ll have a look.
Base Game & Features
Rise of Cleopatra is a 5-reel slot with 20 fixed paylines. Wins occur when 2-5 matching symbols connect along any of these lines, starting from the left-most reel.
Higher paying symbols are represented by Egyptian Icons, and lower paying symbols are card suits. Between 0.2x and 15x the bet is available for connecting 5 of the lowest and highest symbols, respectively.
There’s a Wild Symbol, which substitutes for all symbols except for the Scatter.
Feature Jars & Scarab Wilds
Scarab Wilds can appear on reels 1, 3, and 5 during any spin where a feature isn’t already active. Each Scarab collected fills a jar, gradually unlocking four features in sequence. Once a feature is unlocked, it will activate on the following spin at the same stake and can then randomly retrigger on future spins. If multiple features are unlocked, more than one can activate at once.
Scarab Wilds are removed from the reels once collected, meaning they become less frequent as jars fill. They substitute for all regular paying symbols.
- 6 Scarabs – Remove Suits
- 12 Scarabs – Random Wilds
- 18 Scarabs – Multiplier
- 24 Scarabs – Mega Wilds
When a Scarab Wild lands, it fills a feature jar and then disappears from the reels, resulting in fewer Scarabs available to land on subsequent spins.
The feature jars are:
- Remove Suits – All low-paying card suit symbols are removed from the reels for the spin, improving the chances of landing higher-value combinations.
- Random Wilds – A random number of Cleopatra Wilds are added to the reels in random positions. These substitute for all regular symbols and take on the form of the symbol that creates the longest win on a single line.
- Multiplier – A multiplier is selected at random and applies to the next winning spin. If no win occurs immediately, it stays active until a win is registered. Multiple multipliers can stack if the feature retriggers before a win lands. Active multipliers carry into Free Spins and apply to the first win in the bonus. If a multiplier remains active at the end of Free Spins, it applies to the next base game win.
- Available multipliers: x2, x3, x4, x5, x7, x10.
- Mega Wilds – When triggered, one or more oversized Cleopatra Wilds (ranging from 2×2 to 3×3 in size) are added to the reels, potentially covering large sections of the grid.
Free Spins
3, 4 or 5 Free Spins scatters during a base spin trigger 8, 10, or 12 Free Spins respectively.
3, 4 or 5 Free Spins scatters during a Free Spins trigger 4, 5, 6 additional Free Spins.
Any unlocked features can also trigger in the bonus round. The progress accumulated towards unlocking a feature is carried into and out of the bonus round.
Our Honest Verdict
We try our best not to go into any review pessimistic about the outcome, but Rise of Cleopatra underwhelmed us from the very beginning. It’s not that we don’t like Egyptian-style slots, but it’s pretty generic, even for an Egyptian game.
Seemingly, not a lot of thought went into the theme or feature with this one, which brings back a lot of features seen in a lot of previous Red Tiger Slots. Remove low-paying symbols, random wilds, multiplier and a big wild…not that revolutionary.
Red Tiger are capable of great things, and they’ve done great things. This was just a release to get one out there. The team knows it won’t cause ripples, and at best might rake in a few players when it hits the ‘new slots’ section of the casino when it goes live.
Its win potential is underwhelming too, 5,363x doesn’t quite cut it in the new ‘10,000x standard’ world, and overall, it feels pretty lazy.
