The Grand Rooster has arrived, and the ladies are lining up for a night with the grandest of them all.

Imagine being the most eligible bachelor in the room, the one who makes all the ladies turn their heads as soon as you enter with valiant plumage flowing and confidence radiating with every step and head bobble, and gobble gobble….that might be Turkeys, but regardless.

That’s right, Roosters are more successful with the ladies than you are. Don’t be jealous, fellas, be proud. The men who walk taller and strut louder remind us all that confidence isn’t arrogance, it’s belief. Think of him not as a show off, but that he’s showing us how it’s done.

Jokes aside, the Grand Rooster is certainly a successful ladies’ man, but is it a successful slot? Some love Hold & Win style slots, and some can’t stand them. If you’re the latter, then you’d be justified in your dismissal of it without so much as a second glance.

We have our own opinions on the Hold & Win mechanic; it’s not our favourite…But the Grand Rooster deserves a fair review, and a fair review it shall have.

Base Game & Features

The Grand Rooster is a new slot title from Octoplay, played across 5 reels, 3 rows, and 5 fixed paylines. To land a win, you’ll need 3 to 5 matching symbols to appear on adjacent reels from left to right, starting from the first reel. Symbol Payouts range from 0.5x up to 50x your stake, depending on the combination.

Wild symbols can land on any reel and help complete winning lines by substituting for all regular symbols. However, they won’t substitute for special symbols like golden coins, plus coins, or the treasure chicken.

Cash Prizes

Golden Coin symbols may appear on the reels with cash prize values of 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x, or 10x your bet. These prizes can only be collected when a Treasure Chicken symbol is present on the reels during the same spin.

If the cash amounts are too large to display directly, they’ll instead be shown as bet multipliers. In the base game, up to 9 Golden Coins can land per spin, while the Hold & Win bonus round allows for a maximum of 4 per spin.

Treasure Chicken

Up to 1 Treasure Chicken symbol can land at a time. The Treasure Chicken symbol fills the whole reel and collects the Cash prizes of any Golden Coin symbols that are on the reels in the same spin.

Rooster Multiplier

Above the reels, you’ll find a multiplier that begins at x1 and applies to all Cash Prize wins in the base game. Each time a Plus Coin symbol appears, the multiplier increases by 1, up to a maximum of x10. However, only one Plus Coin can land per spin.

Once the multiplier is used to boost a win, it resets back to x1 for the next spin. The multiplier’s progression is saved between sessions for the selected stake level.

Hold & Win

Each time a Golden Coin or Treasure Chicken symbol lands, it tosses 1 or 5 coins, respectively, toward the Bonus Egg located above the reels. These coins have a chance to trigger the Hold & Win feature. While the egg may visually crack or animate, these effects are purely cosmetic and have no impact on triggering the bonus.

When Hold & Win is activated, the game may begin by placing at least 1 Golden Coin and 1 Treasure Chicken symbol on the reels.

The feature starts with 3 Free Spins. Every time a Golden Coin, Jackpot Coin, or Plus Coin lands, the spin count resets back to 3. During this bonus round, only Golden Coins, Jackpot Coins, Plus Coins, and Empty symbols can appear.

Golden Coins and the Treasure Chicken become sticky, locking in place for the duration of the feature. At the end of the round, all locked cash prizes and jackpots are multiplied by the current Rooster multiplier and then collected by the Treasure Chicken.

Once the Hold & Win bonus ends, the Rooster multiplier retains the value it reached. If 12 Golden Coins and a Treasure Chicken symbol are locked in position, the feature ends immediately.

Jackpot Prizes

Above the reels, you’ll find four Jackpot tiers: Mini, Minor, Major, and Grand. During the Hold & Win bonus, landing a Mini, Minor, or Major Jackpot symbol will award the corresponding prize at the end of the feature. A maximum of 4 Jackpot symbols can land per spin during this round.

The Jackpot values are as follows:

  • Mini Jackpot – 25x your stake
  • Minor Jackpot – 50x your stake
  • Major Jackpot – 100x your stake
  • Grand Jackpot – 500x your stake

To win the Grand Jackpot, you must lock 12 Golden Coin symbols and a Treasure Chicken symbol on the reels during the Hold & Win bonus.

Double Chance

Double Chance doubles the chance of winning the feature. This increases costs half your current bet.

The RTP when Double Chance is enabled is 95.75%

Our Honest Verdict

Honestly, The Grand Rooster is fairly standard stuff.

It’s nothing to shout about from the rooftops of the barn, but not a terrible release by any means. It’ll suit players looking for a ‘farmyard favourite’, or those happy with standard Hold & Win style gameplay, but if you’re the type of player who likes the volatile swings of games from Nolimit City, Relax Gaming or other top providers then this probably won’t scratch an itch.

It’s easy to get caught up by our affinity for such innovative games, but we do see the potential and the appeal for slots like this. It wasn’t made to push boundaries, turn heads or make a statement, and that’s fine.

The best Octoplay can hope for is a few lucky catches when it features in the casino lobby upon release, but we’re fairly sure it’ll fade away after that.

Overall, The Grand Rooster is fine, but forgettable in the grand scheme of things. If farming slots are your thing, then we’d say that Frank’s Farm or Boom Farm are more interesting alternatives
