Monzo is one of the UK’s biggest challenger banks, and its coral-pink card turns up in millions of wallets. So it is a fair question to ask which casinos take it. The short answer: almost all of them. The longer, more useful answer is that Monzo is not a separate payment method at all, and the one feature that actually matters for gambling is a tool designed to stop you spending. This page explains both.
What Is a Monzo Casino?
There is no such thing as a dedicated “Monzo casino” network. Monzo is a UK bank, and the card it issues is a standard Visa debit card. That means any UK-licensed casino that accepts Visa debit accepts Monzo, because to the casino’s cashier a Monzo card looks like any other Visa debit card. If you have ever seen a site list “Visa” at the checkout, that is your green light.
This is different from an e-wallet like PayPal or MuchBetter, where the casino has to sign up to that specific provider before you can use it. With Monzo there is nothing to sign up to and no separate balance to top up. You are simply paying with a debit card that happens to be issued by Monzo instead of a high-street bank. So rather than hunting for a “list of Monzo casinos”, the honest guidance is: pick a casino you like from a licensed operator, check it takes Visa debit, and your Monzo card will work.
One important caveat sits underneath all of this, and it is the reason Monzo deserves its own page rather than a line on our Visa guide: the Gambling Block.
The Monzo Gambling Block
Monzo builds a Gambling Block straight into its app. When it is switched on, Monzo automatically declines any payment to a merchant flagged as gambling, so a deposit to a casino simply will not go through. It is free, it is on the card level rather than the casino level, and it works across every gambling site because it keys off the merchant category, not a block list you have to maintain yourself.
What makes Monzo’s version genuinely well designed is the cooldown. Turning the block off is not instant. When you request to remove it, Monzo makes you wait a period that you chose when you set it up, and that period can run from a minimum of 2 days all the way up to 12 months. The idea is simple and evidence-based: the urge to gamble in the moment passes, and a 48-hour speed bump (or a much longer one) gives that urge time to fade before any money can move.
The usage numbers tell you people lean on it. Monzo has reported that more than 700,000 customers have used the Gambling Block, and that in 2024 it stopped over £9m of attempted gambling payments. When customers set their cooldown, most did not pick the shortest option: around 75% chose a period longer than the 48-hour minimum, and roughly 41% chose the full 12 months. (Monzo’s own published figures)
How to Turn the Gambling Block On or Off
The control lives in the Monzo app. Broadly the steps are:
- Open the Monzo app and go to your account, then find the card controls or spending controls section.
- Look for “Gambling Block” and toggle it on. It takes effect straight away.
- To turn it off later, request removal and choose (or accept) your cooldown period. Nothing changes until that time has passed.
- Once the cooldown ends you have to confirm again before the block lifts, so it is never removed by accident.
The key thing to understand is that you cannot shorten a cooldown once it is running. If you set 12 months, it is 12 months. That is the point of the feature, not a bug in it.
Depositing and Withdrawing With a Monzo Card
Assuming the Gambling Block is off, using Monzo at a casino is as ordinary as any debit card. Deposits run over the Visa rail, so they land in your casino balance instantly and you can start playing right away. Monzo does not charge a fee for a casino deposit, and you get the usual perk of an instant push notification the moment the payment leaves your account, which is a quietly useful way to keep track of what you have spent.
Withdrawals go back to the same Monzo card. Here the speed is set by the casino, not by Monzo: most sites take somewhere between 1 and 5 days to process a card withdrawal, after which the money appears in your Monzo account. Monzo itself does not add a charge on the way in. A rough picture:
| Action | Speed | Monzo fee |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit | Instant | None |
| Withdrawal to card | 1 to 5 days (casino-dependent) | None |

Why a Monzo Deposit Might Decline
If a Monzo payment to a casino bounces, it is nearly always one of a small handful of reasons rather than a fault with the casino:

- The Gambling Block is on. This is by far the most common cause. Check the toggle in your app first, and remember that switching it off starts a cooldown.
- You are using a Monzo credit product. Monzo Flex is credit, and UK rules ban credit cards for gambling, so a Flex payment to a casino will not work. Only your standard Monzo debit card can be used.
- A 3D Secure check did not complete. If the app approval prompt is missed or times out, the payment fails. Retry and confirm the prompt when it appears.
- Merchant mistagging. Rarely, a legitimate transaction is miscategorised, or a casino is flagged in a way that trips the block even when you did not expect it. If everything else looks fine, contact Monzo in-app.
Monzo vs Other Payment Methods
Because Monzo is really just Visa debit with a bank app wrapped around it, comparing it to other methods is mostly about which extras matter to you.
Monzo vs pay by mobile. Pay by mobile lets you charge a deposit to your phone bill, which is handy if you want to avoid entering card details, but it is deposit-only and cannot be used to withdraw. Monzo handles both deposits and withdrawals on the one card, and it carries no per-deposit fee. If you want the full picture on billing that route, see our pay by mobile guide.
Monzo vs PayPal. PayPal adds a layer between your bank and the casino, which some players prefer for privacy, and its withdrawals can be quicker than card. The trade-off is that fewer casinos offer PayPal than accept plain Visa debit, so Monzo tends to be accepted in more places. Our PayPal casinos page covers where it is available.
Monzo vs Visa. This one is almost a trick question, because a Monzo card is a Visa card. The difference is the bank behind it: Monzo’s app-based controls and the Gambling Block are the real added value over a card from a traditional bank. Everything else in our Visa casinos guide applies to Monzo too.
Monzo and Responsible Gambling
Most payment pages tack a responsible gambling note on at the end. With Monzo it belongs in the middle of the story, because the standout feature of paying with Monzo is a responsible gambling tool. The Gambling Block is not marketing dressing: it declines real payments, it makes removal deliberately slow, and the fact that 700,000-plus people have turned it on tells you it does a job.
If you are the kind of player who occasionally wishes there were a speed bump between an impulse and a deposit, the block is exactly that, and setting a long cooldown makes it a commitment you cannot casually undo. It is worth using alongside, not instead of, the tools the casinos themselves provide: deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion through GAMSTOP. Monzo’s block covers your card everywhere at once, which is a nice complement to per-site limits.
If gambling has stopped feeling like fun, free confidential help is available from GamCare and you can block yourself from all UK-licensed sites at once through GAMSTOP. When the fun stops, stop.
Expert Tips
The Cooldown Is the Point
Monzo’s gambling block is deliberately hard to switch off: the shortest cooldown is 48 hours and you can set it to a full year. That delay is the feature. If you feel the urge to lift it, the waiting period is doing exactly what you asked it to do.
Monzo Casinos FAQ
-
Do all UK casinos accept Monzo?
Effectively yes. Any UK-licensed casino that takes Visa debit accepts a Monzo card, because Monzo issues a standard Visa debit card. If a site lists Visa at its cashier, your Monzo card will work there once the Gambling Block is off. -
How do I turn the Monzo gambling block on or off?
Both toggles live in the Monzo app under your card or spending controls. Switching the block on is instant. Switching it off starts a cooldown you chose earlier, from 2 days up to 12 months, and the block only lifts after that period ends and you confirm again. -
Why was my Monzo casino deposit declined?
The usual reason is that the Gambling Block is switched on. Other causes are trying to pay with Monzo Flex (credit cards cannot be used for gambling in the UK), a 3D Secure approval that was not completed, or, rarely, a mistagged transaction. Check the block first. -
Can I shorten the gambling block cooldown once it has started?
No. Once a cooldown is running you cannot speed it up or cancel it early. That is deliberate: the waiting period is the whole point, so if you set 12 months it stays in place for 12 months. -
Does Monzo charge fees for casino payments?
No. Monzo does not add a fee for depositing to or withdrawing from a casino. Deposits are instant over the Visa rail, and withdrawals land back on your card in about 1 to 5 days depending on how quickly the casino processes them.
