Base Game & Features
Consisting of 6 reels and 5 rows, Life and Death is a highly volatile slot with 19 fixed pay lines and a selection of bet levels between £.€0.10 and £.€100 per spin. Other attributes include an overall RTP of 96.36% and a sizable max win cap of 15,000x your bet.
Besides a fraction of colour across reels 2, 3, 4, and 5, the design, reel frame, and symbols are faded black. Wins occur when 3-6 identical symbols land from left to right, starting from reel 1. Each winning sequence applies a payout between 0.1x and 50x your bet.
Wild Multipliers and Expanding Wild Reels
During gameplay, a total of 4 Wild Multiplier symbols substitute for all symbols in the paytable. When a Wild Multiplier participates in a win, the total is multiplied by the value shown. If more than 1 Wild Multiplier is part of the same win, their values are added together and applied.
Wild Multipliers may only appear on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5, each connected to a specific value. Wild Multipliers are represented by the 4 individual Horsemen, numbered 1-4 and displaying their own colour:
- Blue Pestilence: Linked to reel 2 with a value of x2, x3, or x4
- Red War: Linked to reel 3 with a value of x5, x6, x7, x8, or x9
- Yellow Famine: Linked to reel 4 with a value of x10, x15, x20, or x25
- Green Death: Linked to reel 5 with a value of x20, x40, x50, x75, x100, or x200
Wild Multipliers can expand if the Wild Reel is part of at least 1 winning combination once expanded. An expanded Wild Reel will retain its multiplier value from the original, covering the entire reel and substituting for all symbols in the paytable. If more than 1 Wild Reel is part of the same win, their multipliers are added together and applied.

Bonus Buy

Devastation
Landing 3 FS Scatters in the base game triggers the Devastation mode, awarding 10 Free Spins.
This round utilises the same mannerisms found in the base game, only there is an increased chance of landing Wild Multipliers. Landing 2 or 3 FS Scatters awards a further +2 and +4 Free Spins respectively.
Reckoning
Landing 4 FS Scatters throughout the base game triggers the Reckoning mode, awarding 10 Free Spins.
This round retains the same mannerisms from Devastation Free Spins, with the addition of persistent Death Reels. When a Wild Multiplier lands on its connected reel, it will create a Death Reel.
Once a death reel is present, its connected Wild Multiplier will expand into a Wild Reel, regardless of which of the 4 reels it appears on, so long as it is part of a win. Landing 2 or 3 FS Scatters awards a further +2 and +4 Free Spins respectively.

Our Verdict
Hacksaw Gaming forces us to contemplate the morbid reality of death in their latest achievement, Life and Death. No one truly knows when the Grim Reaper will come knocking, but this release from Hacksaw gives us an idea of what happens when the time comes.
To begin, Hacksaw Gaming has stripped the design of colour, except for Wild Reels 2-4 and their corresponding Wild Multiplier symbols, giving that chill of death in the air. Due to this, you may find you need to adjust your eyes frequently to see the individual paytable symbols. Alternatively, having the game stripped of colour significantly highlights the Wild Multipliers and Wild Reels, having an appeal similar to Itero Echospins.
Hacksaw Gaming has stuck to tradition by utilising Multipliers, consistent with a large portion of their portfolio. Each of the 4 highlighted reels has a designated Wild Multiplier available. Aligning the Wild Multipliers with their corresponding reel will result in an Expanding Wild Reel with an active Multiplier. However, on their own, they are just as powerful, delivering a random Multiplier between x2 and x200 depending on the type.
Another advantage is the opportunity to trigger 2 Free Spins modes. The Devastation mode is an enhanced version of the base game, with an increased chance of landing Wild Multipliers, whereas Reckoning Free Spins brings forth a new element named Death Reels. When a Wild Multiplier hits on its respective reel, it will allow the symbol to expand regardless of where it lands on the reel set.
If, like us, you’re a big fan of Hacksaw’s darker instalments, you will find Life and Death available to play across Best Slot Sites from the 27th March 2025 – be sure to give it a go!
