888 Gold (Excluding Korea) Slot Review
Crimson felt, bevelled gold lettering and a reel frame trimmed with Chinese fretwork: 888 Gold (Excluding Korea) is a prosperity-themed fruit machine dressed like a Macau cabinet shrunk to fit a phone screen. For all that red-and-gold ceremony, it’s a game with exactly one idea, and it’s a better idea than a three-reeler needs: the top symbol pays six times more on one payline than on another. The essentials: a 3×3 grid, 5 paylines, low volatility, an RTP of 96.50%, and stakes from 0.05 to 250.00 per spin.
What’s interesting is what isn’t there. This is a three-reel game with no free spins and no bonus round, from Pragmatic Play, a studio better known for feature-heavy hits like Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza.
Base Game & Features
Three reels, three rows and 5 fixed paylines. That’s the entire machine. Wins form left to right across lines 1 to 5, and only the highest combination on each line counts. There are no cascades, no respins and no mystery symbols waiting in the wings; every spin is one spin, and what you see on the first one is what you’ll see on the ten-thousandth.
Because the grid is only three symbols wide, every paying combination is a full row of three. There’s no partial hit, no near-miss reel, and no fourth or fifth symbol to extend a win. A combination either fills the line or it doesn’t, which makes the paytable unusually transparent: six tiers, one outcome shape each.
Symbols and Pays
The paytable is short because it has to be. Six symbol tiers, each paying for three of a kind:
- Coin: 40x for three
- BAR BAR BAR (green): 10x for three
- BAR BAR (double): 5x for three
- BAR (single): 3x for three
- Lantern: 2x for three
- Any BAR combination: 1.6x for three
The coin is the ceiling of the regular paytable, and it’s worth four times the green BAR below it. After that the ladder drops away quickly, in the flat, top-heavy shape you’d expect from a low volatility game: a handful of decent prizes at the top and a broad floor of small ones underneath.
The any-BAR tier softens the dry spells further, since any mix of the three BAR symbols still pays. Three singles, three doubles, or a single-double-triple sandwich all land the same result, so the BAR family effectively works as one broad symbol with six ways to hit it. It’s the classic fruit-machine safety net, and it’s doing the same job here it has done for decades.
The wild interacts with that floor in an obvious but useful way. Because the 8 substitutes for every symbol, a wild standing in for a BAR completes any-BAR combinations as readily as it completes a line of coins. Two eights and a lantern pay the lantern prize; two eights and a single BAR pay the any-BAR prize.
The 8 Wild
The number 8 is wild and substitutes for every symbol on the reels. Its own payout is where the game hides its only real quirk: a line of eights pays differently depending on which of the 5 paylines the combination forms on.
- Line 1: 1,200x the bet
- Line 2: 400x
- Line 3: 200x
- Line 4: 600x
- Line 5: 800x
The spread is six to one from the worst line to the best. In a game with nothing else in the tank, that detail does a lot of work: it gives the reels a geography the paytable alone doesn’t have, and it makes a full line of eights a meaningfully different outcome depending on where it lands. Three eights on line one is the game’s jackpot in everything but name; the same three symbols one line down are worth a sixth as much.
Notice that the ordering isn’t a simple descent. Lines 4 and 5 outpay lines 2 and 3, so the middle of the screen is the cheapest place to land the game’s best symbol while the outer lines reward it most. On a 3×3 grid that asymmetry is visible at a glance, and it’s the kind of detail a three-reel game rarely bothers to build in.
888 Gold (Excluding Korea) Bonus Rounds
There aren’t any. No free spins, no scatter, no hold-and-win, no wheel, no pick-me, no bonus buy. If you came looking for the round that breaks the game open, it doesn’t exist here.
That’s a deliberate shape, not an omission. The 5 paylines, the low volatility and the 96.50% RTP are all built around a steady drip of base game wins, with the line-weighted wild as the only variable. The coin symbol is as good as a single regular outcome gets, and the maths never pretends otherwise.
The maximum win is 2,000x the bet. What’s certain is that the wild’s top line prize of 1,200x the bet stands well clear of every regular symbol, and nothing else in the game comes close to it.
The betting range is the other place this game stretches beyond its format. A 0.05 minimum is low even by classic-slot standards, and a 250.00 ceiling is high for three reels, so the same machine serves penny-stakes play and serious money without changing anything about how it works. The paytable multiples don’t move with the stake; only the coin values do.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6.8/10
An evening on 888 Gold is a succession of small, tidy wins, with the red-and-gold pageantry doing its best to make each one feel like an occasion. The reason to sit down at this cabinet rather than another three-reeler is the wild: three eights can be a sixth of a jackpot or the whole thing depending on which line they land on, and that single piece of asymmetry gives the reels more tension than a game this size has any right to.
The flip side is that there’s nothing underneath it. Every secret the game holds is out within ten spins, and once you’ve seen where the eights pay best, there’s no second act to unlock. The regular paytable tops out at 40x, so even the ceiling is modest by modern standards.
This is one for the classic-format faithful: quick spins, frequent returns, a 0.05 entry point and no complications to learn. Anyone chasing features or a four-figure hit will find the gold here is thin plating. For players who like their luck machines simple, honest and dipped in red velvet, it delivers exactly what the cabinet promises.
