Action Bass

Action Bass Slot Review

The catch-and-collect fishing slot has become one of the most reliable templates in modern iGaming, and SpinPlay Games have leaned squarely into it with Action Bass, a five-reel title built on familiar foundations that borrows heavily from the Big Bass blueprint whilst carving its own path through the Pick Feature jackpot and a three-tier Wild progression during Free Spins. The volatility sits at medium-high, the max win ceiling touches a genuinely eye-opening five-figure multiple, and the overall feel is unhurried and traditional, aimed squarely at players who want something familiar rather than something new. Those who enjoy sitting back and waiting for the bonus to do the heavy lifting will find this a comfortable watch; players chasing constant action or mechanical innovation should look further down the catalogue.

Base Game & Features

Action Bass operates on a standard 5×3 grid with 10 fixed paylines, an arrangement that places it firmly in the traditional end of the market. The layout is compact by contemporary standards, and with only ten lines in play there can be notable stretches between wins in the base game, something the interview confirmed is very much by design. The game doesn’t lean on cascades or cluster pays; wins form left to right across conventional paylines in the conventional fashion.

The visual tone is vibrant and charming, with three fishermen seated in a boat above the reels against an underwater backdrop, though the overall presentation is fairly generic within the fishing genre. It’s colourful and bold, so it does its job aesthetically, without particularly distinguishing itself from the broader field. The soundtrack is similarly relaxed, punchy enough to keep things moving but light enough to fade into the background during longer sessions.

Fish Prize Symbols

Fish Prize symbols are the key collection mechanic in the base game. When these land on the reels, they carry coin values that can be collected through the Pick Feature. At the end of a base game spin, if enough Fish Prize symbols accumulate, the Pick Feature can trigger randomly, converting that collection into a jackpot opportunity. This is the primary source of meaningful variance in the base game, given the limited payline count keeps standard symbol wins relatively modest.

Pick Feature

The Pick Feature triggers randomly when Fish Prize symbols are collected at the end of a base game spin. The pick screen presents a match-three mechanic: players select icons and matching three of a kind awards the corresponding jackpot tier. The four tiers are MEGA, MAJOR, MINOR, and MINI. Where the feature adds a layer beyond a simple match-three is the multiplier enhancement: if one of the three matching icons carries a 2x, 3x, or 5x multiplier, that jackpot prize is scaled accordingly. On the MINI or MINOR tiers the multiplier enhancement makes a meaningful practical difference; on the MEGA jackpot with a 5x multiplier it’s the primary route to the 25,000x ceiling. It’s not an innovative mechanic, but the multiplier wrinkle does add a degree of genuine consequence to each pick, particularly at the top end.

Action Bass Bonus Features

Free Spins are triggered by landing 3 or more Bonus symbols anywhere on the reels. Three Bonus symbols award 10 Free Spins, four award 15, and five award 20. The feature cannot be purchased directly; it must trigger organically during play.

Wild Symbols and Retrigger Progression

Wild symbols in Action Bass are exclusive to the Free Spins round; they do not appear during base game play. The feature introduces a progressive Wild system built around three distinct characters, each unlocking at different stages of the retrigger sequence.

During Free Spins, Wild symbols collect all values from Fish Prize symbols on screen when they land. Every 4th Wild symbol triggers a retrigger, awarding 10 additional spins and advancing the multiplier. The multiplier escalates as follows:

• 1st retrigger: 2x multiplier applied
• 2nd retrigger: 3x multiplier applied
• 3rd retrigger (maximum): 10x multiplier applied

The three Wild types each have a distinct function and unlock schedule:

• Father Wild – Available from the start of Free Spins. Substitutes for all symbols except Bonus symbols and collects Fish Prize values.
• Daughter Wild – Unlocks from the 1st retrigger onward. May randomly multiply Fish Prize values by 2x when collecting.
• Grandfather Wild – Unlocks from the 2nd retrigger onward. May randomly convert Fish Prize values into jackpot prizes, opening the route to the MEGA tier during Free Spins.

The Grandfather Wild is the feature’s most exciting element. Landing him during a high-multiplier retrigger phase, particularly at the 10x level, is the scenario the 25,000x max win is built around. In demo testing the Grandfather Wild did appear, though the more realistic expectation is outcomes weighted toward the lower jackpot tiers. That said, simply knowing the conversion is possible adds genuine tension to later retrigger phases, particularly when multiple Wilds land in the same spin, which can accelerate progression through the retrigger sequence faster than the every-4th-Wild rule might suggest.

The Free Spins feature is where Action Bass diverges most clearly from a straight Big Bass imitation. The three-Wild progression model, the escalating multiplier structure, and the Grandfather Wild’s jackpot conversion mechanic give the bonus round its own character, even if the underlying collect-and-trigger engine shares obvious DNA with Pragmatic Play’s series. The variance in the bonus round is genuinely high: sessions can stall at the first retrigger repeatedly, or accelerate quickly through to the 10x phase with multiple Wilds landing together. The anticipation around the final retrigger level is real whether or not it pays out as hoped.

Our Honest Verdict

Action Bass is a catch-and-collect fishing slot that wears its influences openly. The base game is calm and methodical, a ten-payline grid where the primary activity is waiting for Fish Prize symbols to accumulate and the Pick Feature or Free Spins to arrive. The Pick Feature’s jackpot multiplier enhancement adds modest texture to what is otherwise a standard match-three mechanic, and the base game’s surprise trigger animations are a welcome touch that helps break the wait. The Free Spins are where the game genuinely delivers: the three-Wild progression, escalating multipliers from 2x through to 10x, and the Grandfather Wild’s jackpot-conversion ability give the bonus a character of its own, distinct from the broader catch-and-collect field even if the architecture is familiar. In a short demo session the Grandfather Wild triggered and converted prizes, though naturally the more common experience weighted toward lower jackpot tiers. The 96.64% RTP is a respectable market-average figure, and the 25,000x max win is competitive for a medium-high volatility title, the most direct route being the Pick Feature MEGA jackpot with a 5x multiplier. Action Bass doesn’t break new ground, but the three-character Wild system and the escalation model give it enough of its own personality to stand apart from a straight imitation. Fans of the Big Bass series looking for something familiar with a slightly different twist, and players who appreciate the laid-back catch-and-collect format, are the natural audience. Those seeking mechanical innovation or fast-paced base game action will find it a slow wait between moments that matter.
