The battlefield shakes under cannon fire as Samurai Kane locks eyes with the enemy in Bushido Gold, courtesy of ELK Studios. Every clash of their blades echoes with tension, each strike & blow a contest of mastery and resolve. Only one warrior will leave standing.

The action unfolds across a 6×4 grid, which introduces Stacked Wilds, Splitting symbols, and an explosive Free Spins mode. With wins reaching up to 25,000x your bet, the stakes are anything but modest.

ELK Studios first introduced us to their fearless explorer, Kane, back in 2019. Since then, Kane has become a firm favourite, journeying across diverse settings in titles such as Pacific Gold and Avalon Gold. With every new Gold release, anticipation naturally grew as we speculated where Kane would end up next.

Given our love for the series, this made the announcement that Valhall Gold would conclude his journey particularly hard to accept, although they did manage to squeeze Elysian Gold in after the fact.

While slot franchises come and go, the timing was notable following ELK Studios’ decision to retire the popular Nitropolis series. Fortunately, this series later returned with a standalone release, Nitropolis TV, and it appears the Gold series may be receiving the same treatment…

Base Game & Features

Bushido Gold is a highly (7/10) volatile video slot with 6 reels, varying rows, and up to millions of ways to win. Winning combinations trigger when 3-6 matching symbols land on adjoining reels, starting from the leftmost.

Warrior Kane is the game’s highest-paying symbol, followed by the Purple, Green, & Blue Japanese Masks. Other symbols include 4 Animal Tiles and A, K, Q, & J royals. After a spin is complete, each winning combination awards a fixed payout between 0.1x and 5x your bet.

Additionally, after a winning combination is paid out, each winning symbol is removed from the reels via an Avalanche Feature. Once this happens, an additional row of symbols is added to the top of the reel set, increasing the number of ways to win. New symbols will drop in from above to fill the remaining empty cell positions.

Wilds & Big Symbols

Wild symbols substitute for all symbols in the same winning combination. When a Wild is part of a winning combination, it is removed from the reels as part of the Avalanche Feature. After the explosion, another row is added to the reel set, up to a maximum of 8.

In addition, each spin may reveal paytable symbols in sizes of 1×1, 2×2, 3×3, or 4×4. A big symbol is evaluated as the number of 1×1 symbol positions it covers. Each empty space below a Big Symbol is filled with individual 1×1 instances of the same type.

Ninja & Cannon Symbols

Ninja symbols act as a Blocker that can be activated to trigger the Ninja Feature, but only when it is affected by the Slice feature, Cannon, or an exploding Wild. Once active, the Ninja symbol releases Throwing Stars on the reels.

Throwing Stars will hit between 2 and 10 symbols on the reels, which transform into Wilds. If a Feature symbol is hit, it will automatically activate; however, Throwing Stars cannot land on existing Wilds or activated Feature symbols.

In other news, the Cannon symbol also acts as a Blocker until it is activated. Once active, it will shoot a pillar of Wild symbols upwards, expanding the grid by +1 row (if the number is less than 8). The Golden Cannon is an improved version that has all the features of a regular one, but generates the highest possible pillar of Wilds, starting from its current position.

Big Cannons of 2×2 share all the same features as the smaller ones. When two matching Cannon symbols land on the first & last column of the same row, the Slice Feature activates.

Slice Feature

During the Slice Feature, each affected symbol will present as 2 half-sized instances in the same 1×1 space. If the first & last column reveal the same symbol, in notably different sizes, only the rows with matching symbols will be sliced.

Big symbols that are affected by the Slice Feature will be divided into 1×1 symbols before the slice occurs. Please note that the Slice Feature may also slice Bonus Scatters into two halves, with the potential to activate certain Features.

Bushido Gold: Free Spins

Landing 3 or more Bonus Scatters in the same spin triggers the Free Spin mode, awarding 6 Free Spins. For every additional Scatter after the third, a further +2 Free Spins is awarded.

In this mode, each spin that results in a win has a Safety Level that advances by +1 row. Each new spin will begin at the current Safety Level, with Ninja symbols appearing in every drop.

Our Honest Verdict

While it’s refreshing to see Kane make a dramatic appearance, this time adopting a suitably themed Ninja Warrior persona, the overall experience lacks some of the energy & excitement that defined earlier instalments. The algorithm remains familiar, but the sense of novelty has slightly diminished.

That being said, ELK Studios preserves several mechanics that are commonly associated with the series. The advanced ways to win system once again delivers significant coverage across the reels, supported by expanding rows & the Avalanche feature, which plays a central role in sustaining consecutive win potential.

As with many instalments in the Gold series, Bushido Gold can take time to warm up. Early spins may feel somewhat measured, but once the mechanics begin to emerge, the game’s underlying potential becomes more apparent.

Alongside the millions of ways to win, each spin can activate Cannons, which place Wilds on random reel positions to improve payout opportunities. When combined with the Slice Feature, these advantages offer a stronger win potential, making the 25,000x max win potential feel more achievable.

A similar gameplay structure concludes in the Free Spins mode. However, during Super Free Spins, each spin begins at the highest Safety Level, activating the full 8-row configuration from the outset.

All in all, Bushido Gold resumes much-loved mechanics from the series, making it a solid experience with genuine win potential, though with the series’ once distinctive setup now feeling overwhelmed, ELK Studios may well have been justified in drawing the Gold saga to a close.

  • What is the max win potential in Bushido Gold?
Bushido Gold offers a sizable 25,000x your bet, which can be achieved through the game’s multiple features, mechanics, and Free Spins modes.
