Christmas Krampus Wonder 500 Slot Review
Snow drifts through a moonlit, violet-tinted forest, the reels are framed in twisted branches wrapped in vines, and something with horns is waiting between the trees. Christmas Krampus Wonder 500 takes the meanest figure in Christmas folklore and gives him the gentlest job of his career. This is a low-volatility 5×3 slot running at a 94.07% RTP, and the demon mostly hands out money.
It’s Light & Wonder‘s second run at the character, pointing in the opposite direction to Christmas Krampus, the high-variance original. The collector mechanic survives the trip, and the game sits in the studio’s festive company alongside Huff n’ More Puff and Cash Falls Add ‘Em Up Christmas. Whether a gentler format can hold a horned demon of the winter woods is the real question.
Symbols and Line Pays
Wins pay left to right on adjacent reels, only the highest winner counts on each line played, and awards are per symbol per winning line at the current bet. Wins across all played lines are added together. It’s a conventional line-pays setup, and nothing about it will surprise anyone who has played a 5×3 slot before.
The paytable is a short ladder, and it leans on the premium end:
- Christmas Krampus Wonder 500 logo – the top payer, and the only symbol that pays from two of a kind
- Elf – second tier, a clear step down from the logo at the top of the ladder
- Christmas Tree and Snowman – a shared tier, paying identical amounts at every count
- Candy Cane – the better of the two low premiums at three and four of a kind
- Gift Box Pile – bottom of the ladder at three and four, but it overtakes the Candy Cane at five of a kind
That crossover at the bottom of the ladder is a small oddity: two symbols that swap places depending on how many you land. It doesn’t change anything about how the game plays, but it’s the kind of detail a paytable reader notices.
A WILD can land on any reel and stands in for every symbol bar two: the scatter and Krampus. There’s a subtlety in how it treats the Presents, though. A WILD only stands in for a Presents symbol for the purposes of win lines, never for the cash the Presents carries.
The money inside is untouchable by substitution, and it stays that way in both the base game and free spins.
The BONUS symbol is the scatter, it can appear on any reel, and it only appears in the base game. That last detail matters more than it sounds: once free spins are running, no further scatters can land. The round you trigger is the round you get, with no retrigger on the way through.
Presents symbols also land in the base game and count as one symbol for calculating win lines, but the cash they carry can’t be touched there. That money belongs to the bonus round, and only Krampus can take it.
Free Spins and the Krampus Collector
Triggering the Round
Scatters award the round in a straight ladder:
- 3 BONUS scatters – 6 free spins
- 4 BONUS scatters – 8 free spins
- 5 BONUS scatters – 10 free spins
The Krampus Collector
Krampus only appears in free spins, and he’s a wild that substitutes for all symbols, with no more than three on the reels at once. His real job is theft. Any Krampus symbol that lands collects all adjacent cash prizes from Presents symbols – vertically, horizontally and diagonally – and a collected prize leaves a blank space behind.
After the collection the respins begin. Each Krampus moves one place to the left, and the collection runs again from the new position. A Krampus arriving on the leftmost reel has one respin left in him before he disappears.
The respins only end when every Krampus has walked off the reels, so a single Krampus can sweep several reels of Presents on his way out. A Krampus landing on the fifth reel has the longest walk and the most chances to collect; one landing on the first reel takes a single prize, if any, and leaves.
Position is everything in this feature, and a good round is one where the Presents land to the collector’s left rather than behind him.
Presents Prizes and the Stash
Each Presents symbol carries a cash prize as a multiple of the total bet, from the small change up to a respectable top step:
- 2x the total bet
- 3x the total bet
- 5x the total bet
- 10x the total bet
- 15x the total bet
- 20x the total bet
- 25x the total bet
Presents cash only pays out in free spins, and only through a Krampus collection. One further twist: a single prize can be taken by more than one Krampus symbol, so overlapping collectors compound the same money. Everything lifted is tracked in the Stash meter beside the reels and added to the total win when the round finishes.
The Stash settles only at the end, which gives the round a rising shape: every respin either adds to the meter or moves a collector closer to the exit. Two or three Krampus walking together, each harvesting the same Presents on consecutive respins, is where the round’s real potential sits.
It’s a mechanic that rewards geometry as much as luck.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6.5/10
This is a long sit by a cold fire. The base game drifts along on line pays while the Presents pile up cash you can’t touch, and the whole point of the session is waiting for a horned silhouette to come and rob the place for you. Nobody picks this up for the regular wins; they pick it up to watch the walk.
And the walk is worth watching. A collector that takes the same prize twice, and three times over with company, builds a round that grows the longer it runs – the Stash meter quietly compounding while the respins tick down.
The problem is what you’re paid for the wait. 94.07% is thin, noticeably thinner than the first game’s return, and low volatility means the ceiling on any of it is modest. It’s a fit for players who want the folklore without the flogging – a festive slot for long, undramatic sessions where the bonus round is the whole show.
Chasers of the original’s brutality will find this one tame. The forest is still beautiful, though, and for once the demon in it is on your side.
