Day of Dead

Day of Dead Slot Review

Pragmatic Play’s output frequency remains one of the industry’s highest, with new releases appearing every 1-2 weeks. When a provider operates at this pace, questions emerge about whether each title receives proper development time. Day of Dead launched in October 2021 during this prolific period, positioning itself within the Mexican holiday theme space. The game deliberately moves away from the Book of Ra-style expanding symbol formula many players might expect from the theme, instead opting for a Walking Wilds respin mechanic. The Day of Dead holiday itself occurs on 1-2 November, celebrating deceased loved ones rather than mourning them, though how effectively the game captures this celebratory spirit is worth examining.

Base Game & Features

The game operates on a 5-reel, 4-row grid with 20 fixed paylines. Wins form when three or more matching symbols land left to right from the leftmost reel. The visual setting places reels against a dark graveyard backdrop with fog and candlelight, creating an atmospheric rather than celebratory tone. Mexican-style music provides an upbeat counterpoint to the visual darkness, fitting the Day of Dead theme’s dual nature. Symbol hierarchy includes character symbols with coloured borders at the top (Man with green, Woman with blue), followed by mid-tier musical instruments (Guitar, Drum, Maracas), with standard card suits filling the lower-paying positions.

Betting accommodates a wide range from £0.20 to £100 per spin, suitable for both casual sessions and higher-stakes play. The RTP sits at 96.49% with medium volatility (rated 3 out of 5 on Pragmatic Play‘s scale), meaning feature triggers land reasonably often whilst wins remain worthwhile when they do. Hit frequency of approximately 1 in 4 spins keeps base game pacing consistent, and the Walking Wilds feature that defines the game appears with fair regularity.

Walking Wilds Feature

When a Tombstone wild symbol lands on the reels during base gameplay, it expands to fill the entire reel. Any wins formed are paid, then the wild triggers a respin whilst walking one position to the left. This process continues with the wild moving left each respin until it walks off the screen. Additional Tombstone wilds can land during respins, each adopting the same expanding and walking behaviour. Multiple wilds on screen simultaneously accumulate potential, with respins continuing until all wilds have walked off the leftmost reel. The animations are smooth and visually satisfying, providing clear feedback when wilds expand and shift positions.

Day of Dead Free Spins

Landing three scatter symbols on reels 1, 3, and 5 triggers the Free Respin feature. This differs from traditional free spins, as the game doesn’t award a set number of spins upfront. Instead, the feature centres on collecting and deploying wild symbols. At the start, you’re awarded two collected wilds that gather at the top of the screen. During the feature, Tombstone symbols appearing on reels act as collectable wilds rather than expanding immediately.

Collected wilds accumulate above the reels until deployed. At the beginning of each respin, collected wilds are randomly placed on the reels as fully expanded Walking Wilds, then the respin mechanic functions identically to the base game with wilds walking left until they disappear. Additional Tombstone symbols landing during respins are collected and added to the pool above. The feature continues until all Walking Wilds have left the screen and the collected wild pool is exhausted.

The maximum win is capped at 4,500x stake. When this cap is reached during Free Respins, the feature immediately terminates and remaining respins are forfeited. Whilst this prevents runaway infinite scenarios, it also means exceptional sessions end abruptly. The 4,500x figure sits slightly below Pragmatic Play’s more common 5,000x cap seen in other titles.

Bonus Buy

Outside UK jurisdiction, a bonus buy feature is available for 100x stake. This immediately triggers the Free Respin feature, bypassing natural scatter collection. However, the RTP increase is negligible, rising from 96.49% to just 96.50%. A 0.01% RTP gain for 100x stake represents objectively poor value. Players seeking instant feature access may still use it for convenience, but mathematically the bonus buy offers minimal advantage.

Our Honest Verdict

Day of Dead delivers competent mechanics without standout innovation. The Walking Wilds system functions smoothly with satisfying animations, and the collected wilds concept during Free Respins adds a layer of anticipation. Medium volatility keeps sessions reasonably balanced, stretches without features do occur but rarely run for long, and triggers arrive regularly enough for accumulated wilds to generate decent wins. When the feature does land and multiple collected wilds deploy across respins, the 4,500x potential becomes tangible.

The game’s limitations are equally clear. Theme execution feels corporate rather than celebratory, the dark graveyard aesthetic with upbeat music creates tonal inconsistency rather than capturing the Day of Dead’s balance of remembrance and joy. The 4,500x cap, whilst reasonable, positions this below other Pragmatic Play releases offering 5,000x or higher. Base gameplay between feature triggers lacks momentum, the 20-payline structure with standard symbols doesn’t generate excitement when Walking Wilds aren’t involved.

Pragmatic Play’s frequent release schedule is evident here. The game functions without technical issues, mobile compatibility via HTML5 is solid across devices, and production values meet professional standards. Yet nothing about Day of Dead demands attention in an oversaturated market. Players seeking medium-volatility respin mechanics will find the system works as intended. Those chasing standout features, memorable gameplay moments, or thematic authenticity should look elsewhere. The game will serve fans of Pragmatic Play’s house style and Walking Wilds enthusiasts, but it lacks the qualities to generate lasting interest. It’s a technically sound release that will inevitably fade as newer titles arrive.
