Dead West Slot Review
The most important reel in NetEnt’s Dead West doesn’t pay anything. The horizontal Feature Lane above the six paying reels is where the game’s whole character lives: it’s a slot that wins by building, not by landing, and every other choice it makes serves that. The frontier town around it, crow on the dead tree, steeple in the orange dusk, is painted to be watched slowly.
It’s a 7-reel, 7-row game, six vertical reels doing the paying while a seventh horizontal reel spins right to left above them. Wins need eight or more of the same symbol scattered anywhere, stakes run from 0.2 to 400, the RTP is 96.03% and the top win is 10,863x. The scatter-and-avalanche shape is Gonzo’s Quest territory, the frontier setting belongs to Dead or Alive 2, and the odd reel arrangement has kinship with Finn and the Swirly Spin.
Scattered Wins and the Avalanche
Any combination of eight or more of the same symbol, anywhere on the reels, pays as a scattered win. Wins from different symbols in the same spin are added together, and only the highest win per combination counts. It’s the cluster-pays idea without the clustering: position doesn’t matter, volume does.
Every win starts an Avalanche. The winning symbols disappear, new symbols fall in to fill the gaps, and the board is evaluated again. Avalanches keep rolling for as long as they keep paying.
Symbol values scale with the bet, and pays are multiples of the total stake. Three cowboy symbols carry the real money, and they pay identically until the top tiers:
- Cowboy (red): 8 pays 0.05x, 9 pays 0.10x, 10 pays 0.20x, 11 pays 0.40x, 12 pays 0.50x, 13 pays 7.50x, 14 pays 20x, 15 pays 40x, 16 pays 50x, 17 to 42 pays 500x
- Cowboy (green/teal): 8 pays 0.05x, 9 pays 0.10x, 10 pays 0.20x, 11 pays 0.40x, 12 pays 0.50x, 13 pays 7.50x, 14 pays 10x, 15 pays 15x, 16 pays 25x, 17 to 42 pays 500x
- Cowboy (grey/blue): 8 pays 0.05x, 9 pays 0.10x, 10 pays 0.20x, 11 pays 0.40x, 12 pays 0.50x, 13 pays 5x, 14 pays 7.50x, 15 pays 12.50x, 16 pays 20x, 17 to 42 pays 500x
The flat 500x from seventeen matching symbols onwards is where the paytable stops doing the work and the multipliers take over. Most of what the base game pays out is small-change combinations.
Wilds come in two sizes: regular 1×1 symbols and Colossal Wilds at 2×2 or 3×3. Both substitute for everything except the Scatter and the Special symbols, and a 2×2 Colossal counts as four wilds when wins are evaluated, a 3×3 as nine.
Hot Zones
At the start of each spin, at least two random positions on the vertical reels become Hot Zones, framed in red, and they stay put for the whole round. Each one starts with a multiplier of x1, x2 or x3.
When a symbol inside a Hot Zone is part of a winning combination, the win is multiplied by the sum of every Hot Zone multiplier in that combination. After the win clears and before the next Avalanche, each Hot Zone that contributed grows by 1.
A single long Avalanche chain can take a pair of x2 zones and quietly turn them into x5s. Hot Zone positions and their grown multipliers carry over into Free Spins, so zones built up in the base game arrive with the bonus round already armed.
The Feature Lane and Its Specials
The seventh reel sits horizontally above the vertical ones and spins from right to left. Regular Wilds can appear on it, and so can the five Special symbols: Bomb, Swap, Multiply, Expand and Expand+.
A Special activates when an Avalanche empties the reel below it and the symbol falls down onto that space, with its action beginning once no more wins are pending. If several trigger at once, they resolve in a fixed order: Expand, Expand+, Multiply, Swap, then Bomb. An Expand landing before a Bomb changes what the explosion clears.
Bomb and Swap
The Bomb explodes along with every symbol adjacent to it, except Scatters, Wilds, Swaps and unused multipliers, opening space for a fresh Avalanche. It chains well.
The Swap turns itself and all adjacent symbols, with the same exceptions, into one matching symbol, building a scattered combination in one move. A symbol transformed by Swap a second time becomes a Wild: keep swapping and the board turns feral.
Multiply, Expand and Expand+
The Multiply carries a value of x2 or x3 and multiplies every Hot Zone multiplier on its own reel and the reels beside it. On a board with several grown zones, one of these can rewrite the maths of an entire spin.
The Expand converts its landing position into a Hot Zone. Land it on an existing zone and that zone upgrades to a fiery red frame with its multiplier reset to the sum of all Hot Zone multipliers on the board.
Land it on an upgraded zone and it becomes persistent, yellow-framed, summed again. A persistent zone that wins doesn’t just grow by 1: it also absorbs the combined values of the multipliers around it before the next Avalanche.
The Expand+ does everything Expand does, plus it converts itself and up to eight adjacent positions into Hot Zones in one go. It’s the strongest single symbol on the Feature Lane.
Free Spins
Scatters can appear on the reels or fall from the Feature Lane. The awards step up with the count:
- 3 Scatters award 5 Free Spins
- 4 Scatters award 8 Free Spins
- 5 Scatters award 10 Free Spins
- 6 Scatters award 12 Free Spins
The round is played at the bet that triggered it, and the trigger can land again: 3, 4, 5 or 6 Scatters during Free Spins add another 5, 8, 10 or 12 spins to the counter. Hot Zones built in the base game come with you, multipliers intact, so a long bonus round is a long compounding exercise.
The Elevate Feature
Elevate is the buy menu, and it’s a tiered one. Each option is priced as a multiple of the bet, one activation per game round, and each carries its own RTP figure, all within a whisker of the base game’s 96.03%:
- Scatter Hunt – 1.5x the bet, 96.02% RTP. Improves the odds of triggering Free Spins.
- Feature Lane Max – 5x the bet, 96.06% RTP. The Feature Lane is filled with Special symbols on every spin.
- Hot Zone Frenzy – 30x the bet, 96.02% RTP. Every position on the reels starts as a Hot Zone.
- Free Spins – 100x the bet, 96.05% RTP. Guarantees 3 to 6 Scatters land and the round triggers.
- Super Free Spins – 300x the bet. Guarantees the trigger, and the round starts with the Feature Lane fully stocked with Specials.
The pricing ladder is honest about what matters here. Scatter Hunt costs pocket change because it changes odds, not outcomes, while the 300x Super Free Spins charge buys the full board: a guaranteed trigger and a Feature Lane that never runs dry. With every tier’s RTP sitting between 96.02% and 96.06%, the choice isn’t about return, it’s about how quickly the machinery gets assembled.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.9/10
Playing Dead West feels less like spinning and more like tending a fire. You pick your moment on the frontier, drop a small stake, and spend your time feeding Hot Zones until something catches. Nobody chooses this game for the symbols; they choose it because the board they leave is worth more than the board they started with.
The strength is how much the parts feed each other. Zones grow the Feature Lane, the Feature Lane upgrades zones, and a persistent yellow-framed multiplier that’s absorbed its neighbours is the sort of payoff a plain scatter game simply can’t offer. The weakness is everything before that: three quarters of spins pay scraps or nothing, and the pretty town gets a lot of staring at.
It’s a builder’s game, for players who’d rather compound a board than hunt one lucky line, and the 10,863x ceiling is there for the patient. Anyone who wants simple, immediate thrills has five Specials and a seventh reel standing in their way. Settle in properly, though, and the West is generous.
