Fire Portals Slot Review
Through a ruined archway rimmed with cyan light, a lilac sky fades over grass reclaiming the broken stone, and the title burns in a flaring orange sun. Pragmatic Play has built Fire Portals on a wager of its own: that one wandering wild, left alone on a big grid to grow, is worth more than a scatter of smaller bonus rounds stacked on top of each other. It’s a bet the game mostly wins, because that wild is the only reason to keep the reels turning when nothing else is happening.
The maths underneath is 96.06% RTP, high volatility, cluster pays on a 7×7 grid and a 10,000x win ceiling, with bets from 0.20 to 240 per spin. It is a cousin of Gates of Olympus and Sugar Rush, sharing their tumbles-and-multipliers bones. Whether the wild does enough with them is the question the reels have to answer.
How Fire Portals Pays
There are no paylines. Every symbol pays in blocks of at least five, connected horizontally or vertically anywhere on the 7×7 grid. Only the highest win counts per combination, and wins from multiple blocks in one spin all add together. All pays are multiples of the base bet.
Seven symbols carry the paytable, from the woman in the purple frame down to the orange amulet. The values below are multiples of the total bet.
- Woman (purple frame) – 0.75x for five, 5x for ten, 70x for 14, 150x for 15-49
- Fire (pink frame) – 0.6x for five, 4x for ten, 60x for 14, 100x for 15-49
- Ring (purple) – 0.5x for five, 3x for ten, 50x for 14, 90x for 15-49
- Pendant (green frame) – 0.35x for five, 2x for ten, 40x for 14, 80x for 15-49
- Potion bottle (green) – 0.3x for five, 1.5x for ten, 30x for 14, 60x for 15-49
- Hourglass (blue) – 0.25x for five, 0.75x for ten, 20x for 14, 40x for 15-49
- Amulet (orange) – 0.2x for five, 0.6x for ten, 10x for 14, 20x for 15-49
The Tumble Feature
Every winning spin sets off a tumble. The winning symbols are paid and then disappear, apart from the scatter. Whatever is left falls to the bottom of the screen and new symbols drop in from above.
Tumbling continues for as long as each new arrangement of symbols keeps producing wins. Only when a tumble resolves without a win does the sequence stop, and everything the chain has paid lands in the balance at once.
The Fire Portal Wild
The Fire Portal Wild substitutes for every symbol except the scatter, and it is born rather than landed: any winning combination that doesn’t already contain one spawns a wild in a random position inside that combination’s area, after the winning symbols explode. Substituting is its whole day job in the base game – the interesting part is what happens next.
It arrives carrying a x1 multiplier, and every time it forms part of a winning combination that multiplier grows by one. After each explosion it shifts a single position – up, down, left or right, at random – staying inside the footprint of the combination that spawned it.
The multiplier applies to every win the wild takes part in, and it can climb as far as x2500. Merging is where the ceiling comes from. Two or more wilds in the same winning combination combine into one, their multipliers multiplying each other.
Where wilds are shared across several combinations at once, priority goes first to the combination holding the most wilds, then to the one with the highest-paying symbol. Wilds stay on screen until every tumble from a spin has finished.
Free Spins
The scatter is an open book, and it can appear anywhere on the grid. The more books that land, the bigger the round:
- 3 scatters – 10 free spins
- 4 scatters – 12 free spins
- 5 scatters – 14 free spins
- 6 scatters – 16 free spins
- 7 scatters – 18 free spins
Inside the round the rules shift in your favour. Fire Portal Wilds stay on screen for the whole round instead of clearing at the end of each spin, and if wilds were on the grid when the trigger landed, the round starts with them in place. Special reels are in play during the feature.
Retriggers work the same way as the trigger: three to seven scatters award 10, 12, 14, 16 or 18 additional free spins.
Ante Bet and Buy Free Spins
Ante Bet
Two bet multipliers are on offer. The 25x ante puts more scatter symbols on the reels and raises the chance of triggering free spins naturally, but it disables the buy option. The 20x multiplier is normal play, with the buy available. The ante runs at 96.00% RTP against the base game’s 96.06%.
Buy Free Spins
The free spins round can be bought outright from the base game for 100x the current base bet. The triggering spin then lands three, four, five, six or seven scatters at random, so a bought round can begin with more than the minimum ten spins. Buying runs at 96.01% RTP.
One ceiling governs everything: the maximum win is capped at 10,000x the bet, and the moment a round’s total reaches it, the round ends immediately, the win is awarded and all remaining features are forfeited.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.5/10
Fire Portals spends most of its time being quiet, and that quiet is the price of what it does well. The reason to sit down at this archway is the single wild: one symbol nudging around the grid, getting a little hotter with every tumble, until the sums it’s carrying stop being small change. That slow build is the whole experience, and when it pays off it justifies the lean spells that come before it.
The merging is the sharpest part of the build – two modest multipliers becoming one large one turns an ordinary chain into something worth watching closely. The scatter structure is the weak point, because three books pays the same round as seven, just thinner: a minimum trigger gets ten spins, and that’s rarely enough runway for a wild to matter. The round you actually get is often the stingy one.
This suits players who enjoy tumbles, multiplier wilds and the patience both demand, and it holds its own beside Gates of Olympus and Sugar Rush. Anyone after frequent, modest returns will find the gaps too long. The fire here smoulders before it flares, and the smouldering is priced in.
