Pragmatic Play’s Gates of Olympus series receives a festive reskin in their latest release, Gates of Olympus Xmas 1000!
The almighty and powerful Zeus returns in time for the big day in Gates of Olympus Xmas 1000. The latest instalment upgrades the Gates of Olympus sequel to a trilogy, where Zeus can be seen in his Santa costume, ready to grant your Christmas wish.
We won’t know for certain until we get stuck in, but this edition looks to be a continuation of its predecessors, reskinned to fit the upcoming holiday. Some may feel cheated out of new features and mechanics, whilst others will welcome the minor changes.
Gates of Olympus Xmas is more aligned to Gates of Olympus 1000 than the original thanks to upgraded Multipliers that can reach x1,000, hence the ‘1000’ in its title. This game joins the likes of Starlight Princess 1000 and Sugar Rush 1000, but we’re sure it won’t be the last.
Base Game & Features
Gates of Olympus Xmas 1000 is a highly volatile 6-reel, 5-row Video Slot featuring a Scatter Pays mechanic and varying bet sizes between £.€0.20 and £.€240 per spin. The high volatility rating goes hand-in-hand with an overall RTP of 96.50% and a 15,000x max win cap.
Of the 9 High and Low-paying symbols, the highest-paying falls to the Crown, which awards between 10x and 50x your bet. Wins are calculated when 8-30 matching symbols land anywhere across the grid, regardless of their position. Each winning sequence is removed and replaced with new symbols from above, via a Cascade Feature.
Multiplier Symbols
In the base game, a series of Multiplier symbols can appear on the reels, revealing a value between x2 and x1,000.
When a Multiplier appears with a winning combination, at the end of the Cascade feature, its value is applied to the total win for that round. If more than 1 Multiplier is visible, their Multiplier values are added together and applied.
Ante Bet
Players can participate in a special Ante Bet feature for an additional 25% of their current bet. With this function active, your chances of triggering Free Spins are Doubled.
Bonus Buy
Non-UK players can automatically enter Free Spins for an additional 100x their bet. Once active, the next spin will trigger Free Spins with a guaranteed 4 Scatters.
Free Spins
Landing 4, 5, or 6 Scatters anywhere in the base game triggers the Free Spins round, awarding 15 Free Spins and a payout of 3x, 5x, and 100x your bet respectively.
During this round, Multipliers that land with a winning combination have their values added to a Total Multiplier Pot. For the remainder of the round, each new Multiplier symbol will have its value added to this pot.
The total multiplier is applied to all wins that occur throughout Free Spins and does not reset. Landing 3 or more Scatter symbols awards an additional +5 Free Spins.
Our Verdict
After giving Gates of Olympus Xmas 1000 the benefit of the doubt, we found it to be an exact replica of previous titles, with the exception of a festive reskin. We never like to judge a book by its cover, but it was pretty obvious from the get-go what Pragmatic Play was selling.
Like the other Gates of Olympus titles, this one still has elements of excitement, particularly when Zeus raises his hand and drops in big Multipliers, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before and quickly becomes tedious.
On the other hand, the Christmas theme may be exactly what you’re looking for in a game, which makes Gates of Olympus Xmas 1000 a perfect choice. Otherwise, the novelty of such features and mechanics may have worn off by this release.
It’s a shame that Pragmatic Play didn’t use this as an opportunity to introduce new features and mechanics into a much-loved series. Of all the new Christmas releases this year, we can think of a few that are much more appealing.
