Great Rhino Megaways Slot Review

Cheetahs, crocodiles, hyenas and flamingos would never share the same watering hole in real life. Slot reels have never much cared about ecology.

Great Rhino Megaways from Pragmatic Play lines all of them up across six reels at 96.58% RTP, and it plays at low volatility.

The Megaways engine is what shapes it. Reels 1 and 6 hold up to seven symbols and reels 2 to 5 hold up to eight, which tops out at 200,704 ways to win, and Pragmatic Play caps the whole thing at 20,000x your bet.

Animal reels are well-trodden ground for the studio, and 5 Lions Megaways works the same variable-reel format. African Elephant is the more literal safari companion piece.

For the tumbling side of it, Sweet Bonanza is the closer relative: both build their free spins from multipliers that climb while winning symbols keep falling away. Stakes run from 0.20 to 240 a spin.

Base Game & Features

Reels 1 and 6 can each show up to seven symbols, and reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 up to eight. Above those four middle reels sits a separate row that spins independently, right to left. Between them, the maximum number of possible ways to win reaches 200,704.

Wins pay left to right on adjacent reels starting from the leftmost reel, and combinations count at any size. The grid therefore decides how much is on offer before a single symbol has landed.

The Cheetah is the premium symbol and sits some distance clear of everything else: six of them pay 50x your bet, and it’s the only symbol that pays from two. Six Gorillas return 5x, six Crocodiles 2.5x, and the remaining animals and card ranks land between 1x and 2x for a full six.

Every winning spin sets off a tumble. Winning symbols disappear, the symbols above them fall into the gaps, and fresh ones fill whatever’s left, keeping the reel sizes from the original spin rather than redrawing them.

Tumbling carries on until a drop produces no new winning combination, and the total from the whole sequence is added to your balance once it’s finished.

Wild Symbols

The wild appears only on that independent top row, across reels 2 to 5, and it substitutes for everything except the scatter. So the one row that moves differently from the rest is also the only place a wild can land.

Ante Bet

A bet multiplier control sits alongside the stake. Left at 20x it’s normal play; pushed to 25x it puts more scatter symbols on the reels and doubles your natural chance of reaching the free spins.

That second setting also switches the bonus buy off, so you’re choosing one route into the feature or the other, never both.

Great Rhino Megaways Free Spins

Four or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels open the feature, and the first thing it does is hand you a decision.

Choosing Your Round

Four options come up, and three of them are fixed trades between length and a head start:

• Four scatters: 15 free spins at 1x, 10 free spins at 5x, or five free spins at 10x
• Five scatters: 19 free spins at 1x, 14 free spins at 5x, or nine free spins at 10x
• Six scatters: 23 free spins at 1x, 18 free spins at 5x, or 13 free spins at 10x

The fourth option leaves both the spin count and the starting multiplier to chance.

Rising Multipliers

The multiplier is where a round actually builds. Every tumble pushes it up by 1x, and each tumble’s win is multiplied by whatever the counter reads at that moment. Special reels are in play for the duration, too.

Retriggers

Three scatter symbols during the feature add five more free spins, and there’s no limit on how often that can happen.

Buy Free Spins

The round can be triggered straight from the base game for 100x your total bet, and it brings the same set of options with it.

It’s unavailable while the 25x ante bet is switched on, and also not available to players in certain jurisdictions like the UK.

Our Honest Verdict

Overall Rating: 7.7/10

The base game’s job is to keep the counter ticking, and it’s built to do that: tumbles give every win a second look, and the sideways top row is the only place a wild can come from. Everything below the Cheetah is small change, though. Six Gorillas pay 5x where six Cheetahs pay 50x, so a real base-game hit wants the cat.

The free spins choice is the best thing here. Fifteen spins from 1x asks the tumbles to build the multiplier for you; five spins at 10x hands you the multiplier and dares you to make it last. Neither is obviously correct, which is what makes it a decision worth having rather than a menu.

The 20,000x ceiling comes with a sting: reach it and the round stops there, with any remaining free spins forfeited. Anyone who likes Pragmatic’s tumble-and-multiply school will find this a more considered version of it than most.

Great Rhino Megaways FAQs

• What is the RTP of Great Rhino Megaways?

Great Rhino Megaways has an RTP of 96.58% and runs at low volatility, which is confirmed by the volatility meter on the game’s own information screens. The figure sits a little above the rough 96% industry average.
• What is the maximum win in Great Rhino Megaways?

The maximum win is limited to 20,000x your bet. If the total win of a free spins round reaches that ceiling, the round ends immediately, the win is awarded, and any remaining free spins are forfeited.
• How many ways to win does Great Rhino Megaways have?

Up to 200,704. Reels 1 and 6 can each show up to seven symbols and reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 up to eight, so the number changes from spin to spin. Wins pay left to right on adjacent reels at any combination size.
• How do you trigger free spins in Great Rhino Megaways?

Land four or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. You then choose your round: four scatters offer 15 free spins at a 1x starting multiplier, 10 at 5x or five at 10x, with a fourth option that randomises both.
• Can you buy the bonus in Great Rhino Megaways?

Yes. The free spins round can be bought from the base game for 100x your total bet, and it includes the same choice of spin counts and starting multipliers. The buy is disabled whenever the 25x ante bet setting is switched on.
• What does the Ante Bet do in Great Rhino Megaways?

A 20x bet multiplier is normal play. Raising it to 25x places more scatter symbols on the reels and doubles your natural chance of triggering the free spins, but it also switches off the option to buy the feature.
• How does the Tumble feature work in Great Rhino Megaways?

After any winning spin the winning symbols disappear and new ones fall in to replace them, keeping the reel sizes of the original spin. Tumbling continues until a drop brings no new win. During free spins, every tumble raises the win multiplier by 1x.
• What are the minimum and maximum bets in Great Rhino Megaways?

Stakes run from 0.20 up to 240.00 per spin, which covers low-stakes play through to fairly high rollers. Because the bonus buy costs 100x the total bet, the price of the feature scales with whatever stake you’ve chosen.
