Lava Balls

Lava Balls Slot Review

Lava Balls pays out at the bottom of the screen. The reels above the fold matter less here than in almost any other game in Pragmatic Play‘s catalogue, because the real money sits in seven pots under the grid, waiting for a ball to find them – and a session lives or dies on where those balls land, not on what lines up on the reels.

The setting earns the arrangement. A molten cavern torn open beneath a sliver of stormy sky, lava veins glowing orange down the left cliff and cold blue fissures splitting the right, urns lined along a gold ledge beneath the reels – the fire-and-ice contrast looks expensive, and the pin grid at the foot of the screen belongs there rather than feeling bolted on. The game runs on a 5×4 grid with 243 ways to win, 96.50% RTP, medium volatility and stakes from 0.25 to 250.00, in the company of the studio’s hotter entries Fire Portals and Volcano Goddess.

Base Game & Features

Wins pay across 243 ways rather than fixed paylines. Matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left all count towards a result, and only the highest combination per way pays. Wilds land only on reels two, three and four, substituting for everything except the scatter and the four feature symbols.

That’s the whole toolkit on a normal spin. The rest of the base game’s interest sits in the pots, which hold a fresh set of values on every spin and wait for a wild to put a ball in play.

The Lava Balls Wild Multiplier

When a wild forms part of a winning combination, a ball is released through a grid of pins at the foot of the screen and drops into one of the seven pots below. Each pot holds either a multiplier or a FREE SPINS marker, and the pots change from spin to spin.

If the ball lands on a multiplier, every win containing a wild on that spin is multiplied by the pot’s value. Land it on the FREE SPINS marker and the bonus round starts instead. The possible multipliers are:

• x1, x2, x3, x5, x7, x8
• x10, x12, x15, x20, x25, x30
• x35, x40, x50, x75, x88, x100
• x250, x500, x1000

The spread matters more than it looks. Most of the ladder sits at x30 or below, and the three-figure pots at the top of it are correspondingly rare landing spots. A wild win multiplied at x500 or x1000 is the base game’s biggest single possibility.

Paying Symbols

Symbols pay as a multiple of the stake for three, four and five of a kind. The values are:

• King (dark-haired warrior): 1x / 2x / 4x
• Purple-haired woman: 0.8x / 1.2x / 2x
• Boat: 0.6x / 1x / 1.2x
• Green spear: 0.48x / 0.8x / 1x
• Pomegranate: 0.4x / 0.6x / 1x
• A: 0.32x / 0.48x / 0.8x
• K: 0.28x / 0.4x / 0.8x
• Q: 0.2x / 0.28x / 0.6x
• J: 0.08x / 0.2x / 0.4x
• 10: 0.08x / 0.12x / 0.2x

The premium tier is a Greek cast – a warrior king, a purple-haired woman, a boat and a spear – with a pomegranate bridging down to the royals. Five kings pays 4x the stake.

The drop from premium to royal is steep. Five queens pays 0.6x where five boats pays 1.2x, and the J and 10 sit at 0.2x and 0.4x for a full line. Reel wins on their own don’t move much.

Lava Balls Free Spins & Bonus Features

Three or more scatter symbols trigger the round, and so does a ball landing in the FREE SPINS pot during a wild win. Either route awards 12 free spins, played on special reels where the pots become the whole point of the exercise.

Each pot starts the round holding a random cash value as a multiple of total bet. The possible starting values are:

• 0.2x, 0.4x, 0.8x, 1x, 1.2x, 1.4x
• 1.6x, 1.8x, 2x, 2.4x, 2.8x, 3.2x
• 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 10x, 12x
• 16x, 20x, 22x, 24x, 28x, 32x
• 40x, 50x, 60x, 100x, 200x

After every free spin, pot one and pot seven – the two outermost pots – grow again by a random increment. The possible increments are:

• 0.2x, 0.4x, 0.8x, 1x, 1.2x, 1.4x
• 1.6x, 2x, 2.2x, 2.4x, 2.8x, 3.2x
• 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 10x, 12x
• 16x, 20x, 22x, 24x, 28x, 32x
• 40x, 50x, 80x, 120x

The middle pots stay where they started. Only the outer pair compounds, spin after spin, for as long as the round runs. A round that drags on through retriggers can leave those two pots carrying most of the money in play.

Extra Pot Values

EXTRA POT VALUES symbols can land on any reel during the round. Each one carries a random amount, from 0.2x up to 200x total bet, which is added to the pot beneath the reel it lands on for the remainder of that spin.

They’re the round’s way of feeding the middle pots the outer pair can’t reach. The full range of amounts is:

• 0.2x, 0.28x, 0.4x, 0.6x, 0.72x, 0.8x
• 1x, 1.12x, 1.2x, 1.4x, 1.6x, 2x
• 2.4x, 2.8x, 3.2x, 4x, 5x, 6x
• 8x, 10x, 11x, 12x, 16x, 20x
• 30x, 40x, 80x, 120x, 200x

The Ball Meter

LAVA BALLS symbols can hit only on reel one, and BALL DROP symbols only on reel five. A BALL DROP carries a random number of balls:

• 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10
• 15, 20, 25, 42, 77, 88 or 100

When a LAVA BALLS and a BALL DROP symbol hit on the same spin, that number of balls goes into a meter. The meter only fills when both halves of the pair arrive together – either symbol on its own does nothing.

Once all free spins have been played, every ball in the meter drops through the pin grid, and each ball adds the value of whichever pot it falls into to the total win. A hundred-ball meter over five fattened pots is a long sequence of payouts.

The wild multiplier drop also happens during the round, temporarily turning the pots into random multiplier values before they revert to their cash amounts.

Additional Free Spins

ADDITIONAL FREE SPINS symbols can land while the round is running. Each carries between one and five extra spins, awarded the moment it hits. More spins means more outer-pot growth and more chances to top the meter up.

Bonus Buy

The free spins round can be triggered instantly from the base game. The price is fixed:

• Free Spins – 100x current total bet

At the minimum stake that’s 25.00 a purchase, and it scales straight up with the bet. The buy puts you straight into twelve spins with a fresh set of pot values.

Our Honest Verdict

Overall Rating: 7.7/10

A session here is mostly waiting for something to fall. The reels turn, the lava glows on one side of the cavern and the ice cracks on the other, and every so often a ball rattles through the pins and turns an ordinary wild win into something worth watching. That drop is the reason to pick this over the studio’s other underworlds – it’s a proper little set piece, and it never arrives the same way twice.

The free spins round is the strongest thing in the game, because it compounds instead of repeating: the outer pots grow on every spin, retriggers stretch the round, and a fat meter paid out over fattened pots can genuinely snowball. The base game between bonuses is the weak part. Wilds on three reels and a 4x top line mean long stretches where nothing pools and the spin button does all the work.

It’s a patient game, and it rewards patience rather than punishing it. Medium volatility and a build that actually pays off at the end suit players who like watching a round take shape; anyone chasing the biggest multipliers will find the studio’s louder volcanoes do that job better. For everyone else, the embers here burn steady rather than fierce.
