Legend of the Ice Dragon Slot Review
The legendary Ice Dragon, who no mortal can tame, is out to play in Legend of the Ice Dragon by Play’n GO.
So few have seen the Ice Dragon that it’s regarded as myth by some, and wherever it goes, it leaves ruin and destruction in its wake.
As dangerous as it is, the icy destruction leaves behind illustrious hidden treasures. Who among you is brave enough to face the Ice Dragon in pursuit of Fortune?
Play’n GO are one of those renowned providers that induce excitement among the masses with every one of their releases. Admittedly, their branded series of slots fails to evoke emotion like their original ideas do, but for the most part, they’re generally always spot on.
Let’s see how Legend of the Ice Dragon measures up against the rest.
Legend of the Ice Dragon Theme
As you load up Legend of the Ice Dragon, you’ll be greeted with an introductory video of the slot, which delves into the history of the fearsome Ice Dragon. Many have allegedly tried their hand at acquiring the Dragon’s treasure, but none have returned from their quest.
When you get into Legend of the Ice Dragon, you’re greeted by the legendary creature itself, which sits prominently beside the reels. This creature certainly looks as fearsome as they say, and its mythically influenced design may well excite any video game lovers among you.
The tense sounds and music of Legend of the Ice Dragon really couple well with the theme, and the overly dramatic commentator who gives you a pep talk now and then makes you feel like a valiant hero.
Overall, we feel like this is a design from Play’n GO that’ll really grab the attention of players, but can the gameplay do the same?
Betting and Symbols
Legend of the Ice Dragon offers players a variety of betting options. For those who prefer a lower stake, the minimum bet available is £0.20 per spin. For those who prefer a higher stake, the maximum bet available is £100 per spin, with plenty of options in between.
The highest paying regular symbol in Legend of the Ice Dragon is the Dragon Eye, followed by the Crown, the Blue Gem and the Green Gem. Lower paying symbols are as follows: Diamonds, Hearts, Spades and Clubs.
Wild symbols substitute for all symbols.
Base Game and Features
Legend of the Ice Dragon is a 7×7 Video Slot with a Cluster Pays mechanic. To form a win, you’ll need a minimum of 5 of the same symbols to connect either horizontally or vertically.
Each time a winning combination is formed, the winning symbols will be removed from the grid, and new symbols will tumble down via a Cascade, possibly creating more winning combinations.
There is a lot to look forward to in Legend of the Ice Dragon, with a selection of Features to help warm up an ice-cold base game. The two most exciting features Play’n GO has included in this game are the Freezing Features and the Ice Crystal Features, but one of the first things you will notice before these is the Ice Frames.
Ice Frames
At the end of each Cascade, Wild symbols create an Ice Frame wherever they land on the grid.
If a Wild symbol lands in an existing Ice Frame position, it will increment the Multiplier up to x8.
If more than one Ice Frame is used in a winning combination, only the highest Multiplier will be awarded.
All Ice Frames will sit idle until the Dragon Blast feature is triggered.
Freezing Features
During any random non-winning spin, one of three Freezing features can be awarded.
- Hailstorm – One symbol is chosen at random on the grid. 3 of the chosen symbols will have 5 random symbols adjacent to them (including the chosen symbol), either transformed into Wilds or destroyed. 1 of 3 Wilds can be revealed per cluster, up to 9 Wilds in total.
- Avalanche – Triggering an Avalanche will destroy 2 types of symbols and deliver up to 7 Wilds in their place.
- Blizzard – A pattern of 7 symbols is selected. Most of the symbols are destroyed, and the rest are then transformed into Wilds. Up to 5 Wilds can be transformed.
Ice Crystal Charger
Situated on the left-hand side of the screen is the Ice Crystal Charger. All winning symbols will fill the Ice Crystal Charger.
Collecting 20, 40, 60 and 80 winning symbols will activate the Ice Crystal Features.
Overcharging the Ice Crystal Charger by 10 each time (after 80) will award you an additional +2 Ice Frames.
Ice Crystal Features
Each level that is reached on the Ice Crystal Charger awards a unique Ice Crystal feature.
- Tail Lash 20/20 – Transforms all high-paying symbols on the grid into one type of high-paying symbol.
- Ice Scorch 40/40 – Transforms 3-6 random symbols into Wild symbols.
- Destruction 60/60 – Removes all lower-paying symbols on the grid.
- Dragon Blast 80/80 – All symbols with Ice Frames will transform into Wild symbols, and all Multiplier Ice Frames activate.
A Treasure Chest Wild will only appear during the Dragon Blast Feature.
Our Verdict
If there’s something that Play’n GO do tremendously well, it’s grid slots. The likes of Reactoonz and Wild Frames have always been fan favourites, and although they’ve tried their hand at more grid slots since, none have quite gripped as much.
To match the popularity of Reactoonz may just be too tall an order, and although it doesn’t seem quite as good, there’s nothing wrong with Legend of the Ice Dragon. The thing about grid slots that stands out is how much momentum you need before it really gets going. We’ve all fallen victim to a less-than-enthusiastic grid slot which just can’t hit the ground running enough to start triggering some of the features, and Legend of the Ice Dragon can feel like that sometimes.
However, if things start to snowball, then things can get really exciting. There are plenty of different features to experience, and each adds to the game to make for an exciting experience.
Statistically, things look pretty good with a 6,000x maximum win capability and a default 96.29% RTP. It’s worth checking the RTP with Play’n GO slots, though, because they do have a fair amount of lower variants.
Overall, if you’re a big fan of the Cluster Pays grid style slot, then you may well find your next fix with Legend of the Ice Dragon. It’s not a stand-out instalment, but the grid slot style of slots is a competitive genre after all.
