Luxor Fortunes Slot Review
Las Vegas does a fair line in borrowed monuments, but only one pyramid on the Strip has a light beam bright enough to spot from the desert. Luxor Fortunes from Light & Wonder takes that skyline as its whole frame: the black pyramid at the top, palms in silhouette, the glass tower glowing behind the reels.
The interesting thing about it is where the money lives. It’s a 243 ways, 5×4 game at 96.07% RTP with a 2,000x GRAND jackpot you have to pick your way to, coin by coin. Stablemates like Secrets of Memnon, Montezuma and Raging Rhino Rampage chase their big hits through the reels; here the reels are mostly the way in.
The Base Game and Its 243 Ways
Wins land on adjacent reels from the leftmost side, and all ways that hit on a spin are added together. The maths is unusual in one respect: every Reel Ways pay is multiplied by the total bet divided by 20, so the number on the paytable isn’t the number that lands in your balance without that step. Only the highest combination is paid per win.
In practice that divisor works like a line bet on a ways game. With 243 ways available, a 20-step bet unit means each individual way is worth a twentieth of the paytable value, and the ways you hit stack on top of one another. A spin that connects the same symbol across multiple ways collects all of them at once.
Three symbols carry the paying power, and their values are multiples of the total bet:
- Woman/Head – 20x for three, 40x for four, 200x for five
- Snake – 10x for three, 20x for four, 100x for five
- 777 Slot Symbol – 8x for three, 16x for four, 80x for five
The gap between the top symbol and everything below it is steep. Five Woman/Head symbols pay 200x the total bet, while five of the 777 symbol pay less than half that, and the royals pay nothing worth the name. It’s a top-heavy paytable, and the free spins round exists almost entirely to do something about that.
The wild substitutes for every symbol and appears only on reels 2, 3 and 4, which is also exactly what feeds the jackpot game. Beyond the wild and the Pyramid scatter, the rest of the reels are filled by the card royals – ACE, KING, QUEEN, JACK, 10 and 9 – which only matter as filler in the base game and vanish entirely in free spins.
There’s a Turbo Mode button in the bottom right corner that speeds spins up and can be switched off at any time; it doesn’t change outcomes, only pace. Scatter pays sit on top of Reel Ways pays rather than replacing them, so a spin carrying scatters can collect both in one go. All pays arrive in currency, and each spin’s result is independent of the last.
The Jackpot Feature
Any wild that lands on the middle three reels is a potential jackpot ticket. The feature isn’t guaranteed on every wild, which keeps the trigger a little loose – but when it arrives, you’re handed a field of twelve coins to pick from, one at a time.
Each coin reveals one of four jackpot symbols: GRAND, MAJOR, MINOR or MINI. Match three of the same and that jackpot is paid, ending the round. The ladder, as multiples of your stake:
- GRAND – 2,000x the bet
- MAJOR – 750x the bet
- MINOR – 40x the bet
- MINI – 20x the bet
With twelve coins and four symbols, the round can’t run long. The worst case is picking through coin after coin without a match, and because three of a kind ends the feature, every reveal either brings the prize closer or rules a symbol out. There’s no skill in it, but there is a build.
The values scale with your bet per spin, so the ladder is proportional rather than fixed credits. That 2,000x GRAND is the biggest of the four jackpots.
Free Spins
The Pyramid scatter opens the free spins round. Land them on adjacent reels from the left and the round pays out as follows:
- 3 scatters – 10 free spins and a 5x total bet credit
- 4 scatters – 10 free spins and a 10x total bet credit
- 5 scatters – 10 free spins and a 50x total bet credit
The scatter count matters only for the entry award; the spin total is ten whichever way you get in. The initial credit is paid straight away, so even the cheapest trigger starts the round with something on the board.
The round plays on an alternate set of reels at the same bet that triggered it, with the same awards and winning combinations as the base game. The big change inside the round is what’s missing: the ACE, KING, QUEEN, JACK, 10 and 9 symbols don’t appear at all, so every spin is built from the premium end of the paytable.
Strip out the royals and the maths shifts noticeably. Where a base game spin is mostly dead weight in low symbols, a free spin can only land wilds, scatters and the three payers – which is why ten spins on an alternate reel set carries more weight here than the number suggests.
The wild also substitutes for the scatter in left-to-right combinations during free spins, and additional free spins can be added to the remaining count while the round runs. The jackpot feature can fire inside the round too, which is where the two halves of the game meet – a wild in free spins is both a substitution and a shot at the 2,000x GRAND.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
You come to Luxor Fortunes for the coin-picking, not the reels. The base game grinds along on a steep, top-heavy paytable where most spins don’t add up to much, and the reason to keep going is that any wild on the middle reels can pull you into a jackpot round where the 2,000x GRAND is sitting behind three matching coins.
The free spins round is the best thing here. Stripping the royals out of an alternate reel set so every spin is premium symbols is a genuinely smart piece of design, and it makes ten spins feel worth more than ten spins. The weakness is the trigger – the jackpot feature isn’t guaranteed on a wild, so the loosest part of the game sits on the one mechanic you’re actually playing for.
It’s a comfortable game for jackpot hunters who don’t need five-figure ceilings, and it’ll leave volatility chasers cold. The rest can enjoy the view – like the beam over the real pyramid, it’s steady and warm rather than blinding.
