Molten Fireballs Slot Review
Molten Fireballs sits deep inside a volcanic cavern, lava pouring down the rock face and pooling under the reels in a smoky orange haze. Strip away the glow and you’re left with an unusual proposition: the line pays here are almost decoration, four kings returning a tenth of your bet, and the real game is a small number of positions on the reels slowly becoming worth money. Light & Wonder have built a slot where where a symbol lands matters more than what it lines up with.
It plays on a 5×5 grid with 25 paylines at an RTP of 96.01%, with a flat 5,000x stake Phoenix Jackpot awarded via the Flying Phoenix feature. Fire runs in the family, with Ultimate Fire Link China Street and Ultimate Fire Link Explosion covering similar ground for the same studio. How long the glow lasts depends on what’s burning underneath it.
Fire Rings
This is a game about holding ground. Land a FIREBALL anywhere on the reels and it leaves a FIRE RING sitting in that spot for the next three spins, waiting for whatever lands on it. A second fireball arriving while a ring burns restarts the count at three, and so does one dropping straight into a ring that’s already lit.
Once the spins run out with no new fireball, the ring fades away. Rings only exist in the base game and during the feature; the counter itself belongs to the base game alone. The upshot is that positions on the reels become worth defending.
Rings Are Locked to Your Stake
Fire Ring locations are tied to the stake you selected. Change your bet and any active rings are cleared, with the reels resetting to that stake’s own reel set. Switch back and the old rings return with whatever was left on their counters, unless a fresh fireball has restarted them.
It’s an unusual arrangement. Dropping your stake mid-session interrupts whatever you were building, and switching back doesn’t recover the spins the counter lost while you were away.
The Phoenix Symbol
Rings exist to be landed on. When a PHOENIX symbol drops onto a position held by a Fire Ring, the value printed on it is paid, the symbol disappears, and any Phoenix above it cascades down and pays as well. The chain continues until a non-Phoenix symbol fills the spot.
Multiplier Phoenixes pay out across a wide ladder, and jackpot-named Phoenixes sit above them:
- 0.25x, 0.5x, 0.75x, 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 2.5x, 3x, 3.5x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7.5x, 9x, 10x, 11x, 12.5x and 15x the bet on multiplier Phoenixes
- 10x, 25x, 100x and 2,000x the bet on jackpot-named Phoenixes
Where several rings share a reel, the Phoenix doesn’t disappear until the lowest consecutive ring has awarded it. Win lines pay after all ring awards are totalled, so a cascade can land on top of a line win.
The Jackpot Ladder
A four-step ladder runs down the left of the game, and every step scales with your bet:
- MINI – 10x the bet
- MINOR – 25x the bet
- MAJOR – 100x the bet
- SUPER – 2,000x the bet
A Phoenix landing within a Fire Ring awards the amount shown in these boxes, so the ladder is fed by ordinary base game play rather than a separate pick-me round.
Symbols and Pays
Wins pay left to right on adjacent reels, only the highest combination per line counts, and all awards are per symbol per winning line. Line pays are multiples of the total bet. The wild substitutes for the chest, bag, large coin, small coin, ace, king, queen, jack and ten, and never appears on reel one.
The recorded line pays amount to a single row:
- Four kings – 0.1x the total bet
Turbo Mode is there if the pace drags: it speeds up each spin, switches itself off when free spins are awarded, and has no effect on results. Scatter wins from the Phoenix Bonus are added to payline wins.
Flying Phoenix and Free Spins
Three or more scattered PHOENIX BONUS symbols start the Flying Phoenix feature. It opens with the phoenix perched on a rock, and interacting with it triggers one of two outcomes at random: the Free Spins Feature, or the Phoenix Jackpot worth a flat 5,000x the stake.
The Phoenix Jackpot is decided before a single free spin plays out. Phoenix Bonus symbols only pay in the base game.
Free Spins Feature
When free spins come up, the award is between 7 and 50 spins, played on a grid that can grow to 5, 6, 8 or 10 rows high. Paylines scale with the height:
- 5 rows high – 25 paylines
- 6 rows high – 30 paylines
- 8 rows high – 40 paylines
- 10 rows high – 50 paylines
The round begins with a Fire Ring replacing each position of the scattered bonus symbols that triggered it, and those rings stay lit for the whole feature. Any fireball that lands during free spins also locks its ring in place until the feature ends.
An alternate set of reels is used, with winning combinations identical to the base game. When the feature finishes, the base game returns to exactly the state it was in before you entered, rings and counters included.
Retriggers
Phoenix Bonus symbols landing during free spins add extra spins on a rising scale:
- 2 symbols – 3 additional free spins
- 3 symbols – 8 additional free spins
- 4 symbols – 15 additional free spins
- 5 symbols – 25 additional free spins
Phoenix Bonus symbols only pay out in the base game, so during the feature their whole job is feeding the retrigger ladder.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.7/10
You come to Molten Fireballs for one thing: watching a few spots on the reels grow hot while the rest of the cavern waits. It’s a slow burn, and the person who enjoys it is the one who likes a game that remembers what happened three spins ago. Between the rings and the Flying Phoenix coin-flip, there’s more riding on patience here than on any single spin.
The best thing about it is that the bonus round doesn’t abandon the base game’s idea; free spins begin with rings already lit, so what you build carries straight through. The worst is that the ladder’s floor is almost nothing: 0.25x the bet for a Phoenix landing where the game most wants it feels stingy for a mechanic this involved.
It suits players who like accumulation and don’t mind long stretches where nothing pays; anyone after constant feature triggers or rich line wins will find the lava cools quickly. For the patient sort, though, this is a fire worth sitting beside.
