Scrooge Coins Slot Review
Timber-framed houses crowd a snowy cobbled street, windows glowing orange against a violet night sky, fairy lights strung around a reel frame capped with snow. It’s a Dickensian Christmas card of a scene, but Scrooge Coins isn’t nearly as miserly as its name: for a three-reel game it pays out with real ambition, and the five-tier jackpot ladder topping out at 10,000x the bet is a bigger prize than plenty of far bigger games offer. OnlyPlay has kept everything else small – a 3×3 grid that plays all lines, a paytable that tops out at 100x, and an RTP of 95.05% – so the ladder does the dreaming for you.
Three of a kind is all this game knows, and that simplicity is the point. Everything above the fruit lives in the special symbols, so the reels matter more than they first appear.
Reels, Symbols and Pays
The game runs on three reels and three rows, with all lines played on every spin. Wins form from the first reel leftwards, symbols have to sit next to each other on the award line, and only the highest combination on each line counts. It’s the classic three-reel arrangement, done neatly.
A round is a simple transaction: the bet comes off your balance when you hit spin, and any win pays out automatically once the reels stop. Your bet is set in the Bet menu behind the Coins button, and a Max Bet button jumps straight to the top of the range. On some devices the spacebar or a tap near the Spin button starts a round too.
Two speed options sit alongside the manual spin. Autoplay runs the reels without you pressing anything, with stop conditions you can set on some platforms and a plain unlimited run on others. Quick Spin skips the animations so each round resolves faster, and it can be switched off whenever the season deserves a slower look.
The paytable is short and steep. Here’s what three of a kind pays:
- Bells – 50x the bet
- Pocket Watches – 20x the bet
- Coins – 10x the bet
- Candles, Oranges, Plums and Cherries – 5x the bet
Notice the shape of that ladder. From the humble cherry trio to a line of bells is a tenfold jump, and the middle of the table drops away fast once you’re past the Pocket Watches. On a game where three matching symbols is the only win shape, those gaps are the whole texture of the base game.
One Wild symbol sits above all of that. It substitutes for every symbol on the line except the Joker Coins, and three of them on a line pay 100x the bet, making it the richest combination in the base game. That exclusion matters more than it sounds: because the Wild can’t stand in for a Joker, the route into the bonus round can’t be short-cut, and a Joker line always has to arrive on its own.
The Joker’s Bonus Game
A trio of Jokers is the only route into the Bonus Game, and on a 3×3 grid that means filling a line with the game’s trickster. When it lands, the round plays out in its own mode rather than on the reels you were just watching.
Once inside, the rules change shape. Empty cells nearest to the triggering position fill with Coin Symbols, spreading vertically and horizontally across the grid. Each coin carries its own value, and the Bonus Game win is simply the sum of every coin that landed, including the ones that arrived through the expand.
The expand is where the money hides. A coin that spreads into neighbouring cells adds each of those cells’ values to the pot, so the nine-cell board can fill quickly from a single well-placed trigger. More coins on the grid, bigger sum, and the round pays it as one figure.
Payout is automatic once the round resolves. Nothing carries over, so a single bonus is a single settled sum.
The Crown and the Jackpot Ladder
The Crown symbol runs the jackpot side of the game, and it works on a sliding scale. A single Crown opens a Jackpot Game. Land two together and the win from that game is doubled; land all three and it’s trebled. On a grid where three of anything is the maximum, that’s a clean escalation, and it makes every Crown on the reels count towards something.
What you’re playing for is a five-step ladder, displayed on the base game screen and scaled to your stake:
- Grand – 10,000x the bet
- Mega – 1,000x the bet
- Major – 100x the bet
- Minor – 20x the bet
- Mini – 5x the bet
The gaps between tiers are wide and steep. Each step up the ladder is worth ten times the step below it, all the way from the Mini’s 5x to the Grand’s 10,000x, so the difference between a near miss and a hit can be enormous.
A jackpot win, where there is one, folds into the round’s total alongside any coins. The Bonus Game win and the Jackpot Game win are settled separately, and the combined figure is tallied as the total for the round. The Grand’s 10,000x is the top tier of that jackpot ladder.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6.2/10
Playing this one is a lot like window-shopping on that snowy street: quick, cosy rounds of fruit and bells, with a warm glow coming from somewhere richer. The reason to choose it is the ladder – a 10,000x Grand on three reels is a real prize to aim at, and the Crown multipliers mean even a modest jackpot hit can swell into something.
That ladder is its best feature, because it gives a very small game a genuine reason to keep spinning. The weakness is the price of admission: 95.05% is a stingier return than most modern slots offer, and there isn’t enough going on in the bonus round to make that back in entertainment.
It suits players who like their slots simple, fast and pretty, in short bursts with a long-shot prize attached – the kind of person happy to watch snow fall and wait for a Crown. Anyone after depth, features or generous returns should spend their winter elsewhere.
