Temple of Torment

Temple of Torment Slot Review

Hacksaw Gaming have built a reputation for delivering well-crafted slots that balance accessibility with engaging mechanics, and Temple of Torment continues this tradition. Released in May 2023, this Egyptian-themed offering positions itself within the crowded gods-and-mythology category, but distinguishes itself through thoughtful feature design rather than raw innovation. The clash between Ra and Anubis serves as more than thematic dressing; the entire game is structured around these two competing deities, each with their own distinct free spins mechanics.

Base Game & Features

Temple of Torment operates on a 5×4 grid with 14 fixed paylines. Winning combinations form when three or more matching symbols land from left to reel, with payouts determined by standard slot paytable mechanics. The base game establishes itself through restraint and structure rather than constant triggering. High-paying symbols include Ra, Anubis, the Ankh, Eye of Anubis, and Omega, whilst lower-value combinations come from traditional card suits (Ace through Ten).

Wild Golden Scarab Symbols

The most distinctive base game feature arrives in the form of Wild Golden Scarab symbols. These expand either upward or downward to the edge of the reel set whenever landing creates at least one winning combination. Once expanded, they act as standard wilds across all positions they cover. The directional element (upward vs downward) depends on which god prevails during that particular spin, adding thematic cohesion to otherwise mechanical functionality.

Multiplier Wilds Mechanism

Regular wild symbols take on special significance when covered by expanded Golden Scarabs. These become Multiplier Wilds, activating values ranging from 2x through to a maximum of 200x. Crucially, multiple multiplier values add together before applying to the entire win, meaning if a scarab covers two wilds valued at 100x and 50x, the combination multiplies the win by 150x rather than applying them separately. This stacking mechanic creates the potential for genuinely substantial payouts during base play, though such combinations occur infrequently.

Temple of Torment Free Spins

Anguish of Anubis

Landing three, four, or five Anubis scatters triggers this free spins round, awarding 10, 12, or 14 spins respectively. During Anguish of Anubis, Golden Scarabs appear with increased frequency whilst wild symbols become sticky, remaining in position for the entire duration of the bonus. Players can hold up to three sticky wilds per reel. Additional Anubis scatters landing during the round add two or four extra spins respectively, providing genuine retriggering potential.

The sticky wild mechanic transforms this round into a chase for expansion. Each new wild that sticks increases coverage, and any scarabs landing during subsequent spins overlay these established positions, generating multipliers against previously frozen symbols. The round rewards patience and favours players willing to sit through sequences without landing new features.

Reign of Ra

Triggering three, four, or five Ra scatters grants 10, 12, or 14 free spins within this alternative bonus mode. The distinguishing feature here centres on multiplier accumulation. Rather than individual multipliers applying to specific wins, all activated Wild Multipliers add into a Total Win Multiplier that displays prominently above the reels. This accumulated value then applies to every single win that occurs during each subsequent spin.

This mechanic creates fundamentally different strategic gameplay compared to Anguish of Anubis. Players benefit from consistency as much as immediate coverage, since even modest win combinations gain exponential boost from the accumulated multiplier total. In our assessment, Reign of Ra is the more powerful feature, and the mechanics support this view. The round retriggerable through two or three additional Ra scatters, providing two or four bonus spins respectively.

Bonus Buy Feature

Hacksaw Gaming have implemented a bonus buy system here, though important regional restrictions apply. Players outside the UK can purchase entry into any of four bonus options: FeatureSpins (3x stake), Scarab FeatureSpins (50x stake), Anguish of Anubis (100x stake), and Reign of Ra (200x stake). Each option carries its own RTP adjustment (ranging from 94.28% to 94.41%), providing varying risk-reward profiles. UK players should note that bonus buy functionality is not available in the domestic version due to UK Gambling Commission restrictions.

Our Honest Verdict

Temple of Torment delivers a convincingly balanced offering that merits consideration from both Hacksaw Gaming devotees and players exploring medium-volatility Egyptian themes. The game operates at 94.13% RTP (UK configuration) with mid volatility (3 out of 5 according to Hacksaw Gaming’s rating system). The 10,000x maximum win potential proves genuinely achievable across both base game and bonus rounds, whilst the 27% hit frequency ensures wins materialise approximately every 3-4 spins. This mathematics translates to consistent engagement rather than extended dry spells punctuated by rare explosions.

Mechanically, the game positions itself as a statement release. The expanding scarab system combined with stacking multiplier wilds creates tangible excitement during fortunate sequences, whilst neither mechanic overwhelms the session. The dual free spins structure succeeds in its thematic purpose; Anguish of Anubis pursues sticky coverage whilst Reign of Ra chases multiplier accumulation, offering meaningfully distinct experiences within a single title. The multiplier mechanics (ranging to 200x when fully activated) deliver honest payoff potential without veering into fantasy territory.

Certain limitations bear acknowledgement. The 14 fixed paylines constrain volatility compared to Megaways contemporaries, and players accustomed to high-variance experiences may find the medium-volatility pacing less thrilling than alternatives. Regular payouts, despite the reasonable hit frequency, tend toward modesty; substantial wins genuinely require bonus triggering or exceptional base game multiplier sequences. Additionally, Temple of Torment employs established Hacksaw Gaming mechanics rather than introducing groundbreaking innovation, positioning it as refinement rather than revelation.

The verdict positions Temple of Torment as a genuinely solid release that appeals squarely to Hacksaw Gaming’s established player base and to anyone seeking reliable, well-balanced gameplay over mechanical novelty. The visual presentation impresses with thematic grandiosity, though extended play sessions may reveal visual repetition beneath initial appeal. Reign of Ra emerges as the standout feature, and players prioritising bonus round potential should lean toward triggering this variant. Overall, Temple of Torment demonstrates that Hacksaw Gaming remain capable of producing statement releases that, whilst not revolutionary, absolutely deserve player attention.
