The Alter Ego Slot Review
Pragmatic Play‘s The Alter Ego takes inspiration from Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, presenting a Victorian gothic aesthetic that permeates every detail. The game’s brilliance lies in how its mechanics mirror its narrative – a restrained, atmospheric base game that erupts into an explosive bonus experience, embodying the Jekyll-Hyde transformation at its core. Released in February 2024, this 5-reel slot represents Pragmatic Play’s commitment to thematic coherence, where mechanical design and visual storytelling work in tandem. Positioned squarely for medium volatility players and those who appreciate literary references woven into slot design, The Alter Ego rewards those who settle into extended play sessions.
Base Game & Features
The Alter Ego operates on a distinctive non-standard reel layout: a 3-4-4-4-3 configuration that generates 576 ways to win in the base game. This asymmetrical grid creates a unique visual identity, setting it apart from standard 5-reel fare. The symbol roster includes low-paying card values (9, 10, J, Q, K, A) and high-paying character symbols representing Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, with the Dr Jekyll character delivering 6x stake for five of a kind.
The base game’s design philosophy prioritises restraint. Outside of scatter triggers, the bonus features remain minimal – a deliberate choice that mirrors Jekyll’s composed demeanour before transformation. Mystery symbols land randomly and transform into matching symbols for occasional wins, but they function as a secondary mechanic rather than a primary appeal. Standard Wild symbols appear on reels 2, 3, and 4 to substitute for regular paying symbols, providing baseline win support without defining the experience.
Bonus Features & Free Spins
The transformation happens when you land 3 or more Potion Scatter symbols (represented by green potions in the base game). This awards 3 initial free spins, launching you into The Alter Ego’s true spectacle – a bonus round where the game’s mechanical and thematic brilliance converge.
During free spins, the reels begin expanding dramatically. Each retrigger – landing additional red potion scatters during the bonus – resets your spin counter back to 3 spins whilst expanding the reel it lands on by one additional row. This cascading expansion can stretch each reel from the standard 4 rows (on reels 2-4) up to a maximum of 10 rows per reel, creating an extraordinary 100,000 ways to win configuration at full expansion. The mechanical translation of Jekyll’s transformation into Mr Hyde manifests visually as the top-tier character symbol morphs into its Mr Hyde equivalent on expanded reels.
This expanding reel mechanic creates genuine tension as players chase retriggers. Each red potion scatter feels earned, and watching the grid expand progressively builds anticipation. The progression from 576 ways in the base game to 100,000 ways during expanded free spins represents the slot’s most engaging mechanical hook, delivering a thrillingly expansive ride when bonus retriggers align favourably.
Bonus Buy Feature
The Alter Ego includes a Bonus Buy feature, allowing direct entry to free spins at a premium cost. Three tiers exist:
- 3 Scatters: 100x your stake (RTP: 96.05%)
- 4 Scatters: 150x your stake (RTP: 96.01%)
- 5 Scatters: 200x your stake (RTP: 96.01%)
Crucially, all tiers award only 3 initial free spins regardless of purchase cost – the higher price simply provides additional scatters at round entry, not a higher starting spin count. Community feedback has been cautionary here. The expensive bonus buy option adds risk without guaranteed reward; at EUR 240 maximum bet, purchasing 5 scatters costs EUR 48,000 – a substantial wager for uncertain returns given the medium volatility environment. Realistic win expectations are essential before committing to feature purchase.

Visual Design & Theme Execution
The Victorian gothic aesthetic permeates every visual element. The game is set in Victorian-era London under moonlight, with a dark, atmospheric colour palette reflecting the Jekyll-Hyde duality. Symbol transformations exemplify Pragmatic Play‘s attention to detail – the character symbol transitions from Dr Jekyll to Mr Hyde during bonus rounds, whilst the green potion scatter transforms to a red potion scatter when appearing during free spins.
The visual execution is genuinely immersive. Old-fashioned pistols, hats, and potion bottles populate the symbol set, each rendered with period-appropriate detail. The contrast between the calm, restrained base game visuals and the explosive, expanding grid during free spins creates visual drama that reinforces the narrative transformation. This thematic coherence – where mechanics, aesthetics, and narrative align – represents one of The Alter Ego’s defining strengths. Stunning artwork and high-quality visuals with the Jekyll and Hyde storyline beautifully woven throughout elevate this beyond a mechanically interesting slot into a genuinely thematic experience.
Who Should Play The Alter Ego?
Perfect For:
- Medium volatility enthusiasts who enjoy mechanical innovation and a steadier rhythm of wins
- Literary slot fans who appreciate Jekyll and Hyde lore and want a title that genuinely explores transformation rather than simply naming itself after a concept
- Players who value thematic coherence – those who love when game design mirrors narrative intent
- Experienced slot players comfortable with medium variance and understanding the risk-reward dynamics of bonus buys
Approach with Caution:
- Casual players seeking consistent base game entertainment may still find themselves waiting for transformative moments. The base game’s atmospheric restraint can feel flat during sessions without bonus triggers, though medium volatility keeps the pace reasonably steady for those who like regular feature activation
- Conservative bankroll managers who prefer lower volatility experiences and more predictable win patterns
- Players seeking constant action at the base game level – mystery symbols, whilst present, don’t carry enough punch to excite most players or compensate for low base game feature count
- Those hesitant about expensive feature purchases – the bonus buy represents a premium-tier cost with inherent risk despite the medium volatility backdrop
Strengths
- Exceptional thematic coherence – game mechanics authentically embody the Jekyll-Hyde transformation narrative
- Brilliant expanding reel mechanic that creates both mechanical depth and visual spectacle during free spins
- Genuine 10,000x maximum win potential with legitimate path to escalation via reel expansion
- Solid 96.07% default RTP with multiple configurable tiers for operator flexibility
- Atmospheric base game restraint makes the bonus round’s explosive expansion genuinely exciting by comparison
- High-quality visual design with exceptional attention to detail in symbol transformations and setting immersion
- Appeals directly to medium volatility players who appreciate mechanical innovation alongside regular feature frequency
Weaknesses
- Base game feature scarcity means extended sessions without bonus triggers can feel tediously flat
- Mystery symbols present but underwhelming – don’t define base game experience or compensate for low feature activation
- Medium volatility keeps the experience balanced for casual and conservative bankroll players, though wins remain moderate in size
- Bonus buy feature carries premium pricing (100x-200x stake) with no guaranteed reward justification given the volatility
- Free spins trigger frequency (1 in 321) means extended play sessions may be required before experiencing the game’s core appeal
- Limited mainstream popularity suggests it hasn’t fully captured casual slot audience imagination compared to other 2024 releases
- Reel expansion, whilst exciting mechanically, requires multiple retriggers to reach maximum 100,000 ways – rare alignment needed
Our Verdict
Overall Verdict: 7.5/10
The Alter Ego succeeds brilliantly at embodying the concept of duality through game mechanics. Pragmatic Play hasn’t simply named a slot after a literary concept; they’ve authentically translated Jekyll-Hyde transformation into mechanical reality. The base game’s atmospheric restraint genuinely amplifies the bonus round’s explosive appeal, creating a psychological ebb and flow that rewards player patience.
For medium volatility fans, this represents a genuinely innovative entry that merits consideration. The expanding reels mechanic, combined with a 10,000x maximum win and solid 96.07% RTP, creates legitimate thematic appeal for those who enjoy a balanced level of variance. Visual design is exceptional, with symbol transformations and the moonlit Victorian London setting creating genuine immersion that enhances rather than distracts from gameplay.
However, this is unquestionably a niche title. Casual players may find the base game lulls slow to develop, and mystery symbols don’t carry sufficient punch to excite during quieter stretches. The bonus buy’s expensive premium positioning (100x-200x stake) adds genuine risk without guaranteed reward in a medium volatility environment. Quieter stretches are possible, particularly when pursuing feature purchases.
The Alter Ego is perfectly positioned for medium volatility players who appreciate mechanical innovation and don’t mind settling into extended sessions chasing transformation moments. For others, it merits careful consideration before committing significant bankroll.
