Towering Fortunes

Towering Fortunes Slot Review

Pragmatic Play deliver with Towering Fortunes, a luxury-themed slot that combines a refined 80s aesthetic with an innovative Hold & Spin mechanic. Released in October 2022, the game presents a distinctive take on held symbol features through reel-specific multiplier progression. At 96.50% RTP and low volatility, it’s positioned for players who prefer steadier gameplay and mechanics beyond standard free spins rounds. The gameplay itself is straightforward-there’s no bloat or excessive modifiers-which makes Towering Fortunes either refreshingly simple or frustratingly limited depending on your preference.

Base Game & Features

The base game operates on a familiar 5×3 grid with 20 fixed paylines, offering bet flexibility from £0.20 to £100 per spin. Symbol payouts follow a standard hierarchy-higher-value symbols offer larger rewards, whilst lower-value symbols provide more frequent hits. The reels are deliberately lean on modifiers, which keeps the experience grounded and predictable.

Special Symbols

Wild symbols substitute for all standard paying symbols, providing the expected support for completing winning combinations. Beyond wilds, the only base game element of note is the Mystery symbol, which randomly reveals one of the high or low-paying symbols. Whilst this adds minor variability, the base game remains relatively restrained. Mystery symbols trigger with reasonable frequency, and wins land often enough to keep standard spins ticking over without lengthy gaps.

Hold & Spin Bonus Features

The feature trigger is straightforward: land 3 or more skyscraper Money symbols anywhere on the reels and you’re into the Hold & Spin round. This is where Towering Fortunes distinguishes itself from the Pragmatic Play standard template.

How Hold & Spin Works

When triggered, the play area transforms into an 11×5 grid (5 reels, 11 vertical positions). Only Money symbols and blank spaces remain visible during this round-all other symbols disappear. Money symbols that triggered the feature lock at the bottom of their respective reels and remain held throughout the feature.

Each reel operates on a 3-respin counter. New Money symbols that land stay fixed and stack on the held symbols, and their counter resets to 3. When a reel spins without landing a Money symbol, its counter decrements. Once a reel’s counter reaches zero, that reel becomes permanently blocked for the remainder of the bonus round. The feature ends when all 5 reels are blocked or no respins remain.

Multiplier Progression

The payoff comes through reel-specific multipliers determined by how many Money symbols stack on each reel:

• 5 or fewer Money symbols: No multiplier (1x)
• 6 Money symbols: 2x multiplier
• 7 Money symbols: 5x multiplier
• 8 Money symbols: 10x multiplier
• 9 Money symbols: 20x multiplier
• 10 Money symbols: 30x multiplier
• 11 Money symbols: 300x multiplier

At bonus conclusion, all Money symbol values accumulated during the feature are multiplied by their respective reel multipliers, then all reel totals are combined into your final payout. This reel-specific approach to multipliers is clever-it forces engagement with managing each reel’s progression independently, rather than simply accumulating symbols toward a single threshold. Pragmatic Play have genuinely put their own spin on the Hold & Spin template here.

Bonus Buy Option

For players impatient with base game pacing, a bonus buy feature allows direct access to the Hold & Spin round. This is an optional mechanic that provides flexibility for experienced players seeking faster feature engagement, though the cost adjustment (reflected in adjusted RTP offerings) means it’s a trade-off rather than an outright advantage.

Our Honest Verdict

Rating: 5.5 out of 10

Towering Fortunes sits firmly in the middle tier of the Pragmatic Play catalogue. It’s a competent slot with above-average RTP (96.50%) and the 6,422x maximum win exceeds typical Pragmatic Play returns, positioning it slightly better than standard provider fare. The Hold & Spin mechanics are genuinely inventive-the reel-specific multiplier system adds strategic depth that’s refreshing compared to monotonous free spin rounds. For players who specifically chase hold-style features with creative twists, there’s merit here.

However, the game suffers from identity tension. The luxury-themed aesthetic-neon skyscrapers, opulent styling, wealth-focused messaging-suggests a premium experience. Yet the delivered gameplay remains relatively restrained. The base game is undeniably dry, even with Mystery symbols attempting to inject minor variance. The background visuals genuinely impress (neon-lit skyscrapers with fireworks does look appealing), but the reel symbols carry a vintage sensibility that feels dated rather than deliberately retro-chic. The bonus round, whilst mechanically sound, executes at breakneck speed-you blink and it’s over.

Who should play it: Players who appreciate hold & spin mechanics and prefer steadier base game pacing with regular smaller wins. Players seeking above-average RTP and substantial maximum win potential in the £0.20-£100 betting range will find Towering Fortunes satisfactory. The hold & spin enthusiast will specifically appreciate the multiplier progression system.

Who should skip it: Players chasing the bigger, rarer hits of high-volatility games won’t find them here-low volatility means payouts are steadier but smaller. Players seeking diverse feature types will find the single-feature design limiting. Those expecting the luxury theme to translate to premium graphics or complex mechanics will feel the disconnect between branding and execution. Players wanting high-risk, high-reward swings will find the pacing too gentle.

Towering Fortunes isn’t a standout title destined to top many players’ lists. It’s a solid mid-tier offering with niche appeal for hold & spin enthusiasts, backed by respectable numbers (RTP, max win, volatility profile). But it won’t create much longevity beyond the specific segment it targets. Worth a session if the mechanic appeals to you, but don’t expect it to become a staple in your regular rotation.
