Vikings Go Wild Slot Review
Two carved dragon prows curl up either side of the reels, their open snouts framing the grid like figureheads, with a flat grey sea and an overcast night sky behind them. Vikings Go Wild is Yggdrasil‘s original Viking outing, and the fight-then-stick idea the studio later carried all the way to Vikings Go To Olympus in 2025 started on this deck.
It runs a 5×4 grid with 25 paylines, 96.3% RTP, low-to-medium volatility and a 1,900x ceiling on the default bet, with a win landing on roughly a quarter of all spins. The bonus round is what this game is remembered for, and it earns the memory. Bets run from 0.25 to 50 per spin.
Base Game & Features
Five reels, four rows and 25 fixed paylines, all paying from the left. Wins need three or more matching symbols on a line, starting from the leftmost position, and only the highest combination on each line is paid. Eight regular symbols make up the paytable: four vikings and four coloured coins.
The Wild substitutes for everything except the Free Spins and Treasure Chest symbols, and it always completes the highest winning combination from left to right. Where several readings of a winning line are possible, only the highest one counts.
Symbol pays below are shown at the default 1.25 total stake, for three, four and five of a kind. Multiply or divide from there for other stake levels:
- Dark-haired bearded viking – 1.50, 5.00, 12.50
- Bald bearded viking – 1.50, 5.00, 11.25
- White-haired viking – 1.25, 3.75, 10.00
- Blonde woman – 1.00, 3.75, 8.75
- Gold coin – 0.30, 1.50, 4.00
- Silver coin – 0.30, 1.50, 3.50
- Copper coin – 0.25, 1.25, 3.00
- Green coin – 0.25, 1.25, 2.50
That’s a compressed ladder. Even the top viking returns ten times the stake for five of a kind, and the coins sit close enough together that the gap between gold and green barely registers. Line wins here are small by design; the real money is in the features.
Total payline wins are calculated by adding every line win together, then multiplying by your coin value to get the amount in your own currency. The mechanics are as standard as they come, which was the point: everything unusual about this game happens above the paylines.
Stakes are set through a bet level selector, with a coin range of 0.01 to 2 underneath. The demo’s menu can differ from the official figures, so treat the 0.25 to 50 range as the one that counts.
The look is lush, glossy 3D cartoon rather than gritty historical, and it holds up better than a decade-old slot has any right to. The vikings glare out from the reels, the prows frame the action, and the whole thing reads as an adventure rather than a history lesson. Four character symbols carrying the top of the paytable was a deliberate choice too: those faces matter once the bonus round starts turning them into wilds.
Vikings Go Wild Free Spins & Treasure Chest
Free Spins
The Free Spin symbol can land on any reel, and three or more of them trigger the round. The awards scale with the count:
- Three Free Spin symbols – 8 free spins
- Four Free Spin symbols – 16 free spins
- Five Free Spin symbols – 24 free spins
The round plays out at the bet that activated it, and its wins are added to the total win of the triggering spin. Free spins can’t be retriggered by the symbols themselves, so the only top-ups come from the chest.
Sticky Wild Vikings
Each viking arriving on the reels during the round takes on the sea creature before anything pays out. Win the fight and the viking transforms into a Wild that sticks on the reels until the round ends; lose it and the symbol stays as it was.
Those sticky wilds are the whole engine of the feature. There are no ordinary Wild symbols on the reels during free spins, so every stuck symbol came from a viking winning his fight, and a board that fills steadily across eight or more spins can pay across a dozen lines at once by the end. The four vikings are also the four highest-paying symbols, which is why a transformed board pays the way it does.
Treasure Chest
The Treasure Chest symbol lands only on the fifth reel, in the base game and in free spins alike. What’s inside depends on where you are:
- Base game – 8 to 12 free spins, or a coin win up to 40x the bet
- Free spins – 2 to 4 extra spins, a coin win up to 40x the bet, or a Wild Reel
The coin win steps through fixed values of 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 or 1,000 coins, and the free spins award can be any whole number from 8 to 12. The Wild Reel turns one of the first four reels entirely wild, chosen at random, and it stays wild for the rest of the round.
Two fine-print rules worth knowing. The chest can’t award free spins on a spin where the scatter symbols have already done it, and if a chest lands on top of a sticky wild, both stay active for that spin. The second rule matters more than it looks: a chest sitting on an already-stuck wild keeps paying out its contents while the wild underneath keeps substituting.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
Most of a session here is small change and patience, waiting on the scatters or a chest on the fifth reel. Then the round lands and the crew start winning their fights, and suddenly every spin is adding another locked wild to the board. That slow accumulation into a big closing pay is the reason anybody chooses this over its flashier descendants.
The build is honest, too. Gentle volatility means the round comes round often enough to actually see, and a half-wild board by the last spins is a realistic afternoon, not a rumor. What lets it down is the rest of the math: line pays are pocket money, the round can’t extend itself, and the ceiling is modest by anything post-2018.
It suits players who like a bonus that gathers momentum and don’t need four figures to feel it was worth the wait. Big-multiplier hunters will find the sea here too calm. For everyone else, this old longship still sails better than it has any right to.
