Warlords – Crystals of Power Slot Review
War banners hang torn against a dusk sky, hooded figures lean out of the mist at the edges, and the reels sit inside a gold frame with carved scrollwork at its corners. Warlords – Crystals of Power is NetEnt at its most severe, and the discipline pays off: three warlords share these reels, and each one wants your bonus round for themselves.
It runs at 96.89% RTP with a 33% hit frequency, stakes from 0.15 to 150 per spin, and a maximum win of 6,667x the bet. Where Vikings and Conan let the cast show off, this one puts its warlords to work, and the game is better for it.
Reels, Symbols and the Crystal Wild
Five reels, but not a uniform grid. Reels 1, 3 and 5 carry large character symbols filling the upper part of the reel with two smaller symbols below, while reels 2 and 4 stack four symbols each. The staggered silhouette suits the battlefield framing.
It also changes how wins feel. A large character symbol takes up most of its reel, so a top pay lands as one big face rather than a row of small ones, and the masks and helmets cluttering the low end are tucked beneath the heroes they serve. The characters dominate the screen the way the theme wants them to.
The crystal wild substitutes for everything except the three scatter symbols, and it’s the joint richest symbol on the reels, paying like the top character. All pays below are multiples of the total bet.
- Samurai (red warrior/wolf): 1x, 4x, 20x for three, four, five
- Huntress (green archer/panther): 0.8x, 3.3333x, 13.3333x
- Warlord (blue warrior/boar): 0.6667x, 3x, 10x
- Wolf: 0.3333x, 2.6667x, 8x
- Panther: 0.3333x, 2.3333x, 6x
- Boar/creature mask: 0.3333x, 2x, 5x
- Red samurai mask: 0.2x, 1.6667x, 4x
- Green mask: 0.2x, 1.3333x, 3.3333x
- Blue helmet: 0.2x, 1x, 2.6667x
The three animal companions, wolf, panther and boar, are each bound to a warlord: every character pays alongside their beast. A five-of-a-kind top character win at 20x the bet is a modest return for the base pays. The real money is designed to arrive through the features.
Random Overlay Wilds
Every spin in the main game can activate a Random Overlay Wild, and the feature uses a different reel set entirely, one with no scatters on it. When it fires, the warlord whose weapon appears decides the shape of the help:
- Barbarian Hammer: four wilds in a square block across reels 1 to 4
- Priestess Arrow: two to five wilds across reels 1 to 5
- Samurai Sword: two to five wilds across reels 1 to 4
The affected symbols are replaced by overlay wilds, which then substitute as normal. Because the feature’s reel set carries no scatters, a spin that triggers an overlay wild is a pure line-pays spin: nothing else can build on it.
The three shapes aren’t equal, either. The Priestess Arrow is the widest swing, since five wilds spread across all five reels can wire together several big lines at once. The Barbarian Hammer’s fixed square is more predictable, and the Samurai Sword’s two to five wilds sits between them.
Scatter Battles and Re-Spins
Scatters land on reels 2, 3 and 4 only in the main game, and there are three of them: blue for the Barbarian, green for the Priestess, red for the Samurai. Two or more scatters anywhere awards Re-Spins, and this is where the game stops being polite. If the scatters match, the Re-Spins start at once.
If they don’t match, the warlords fight. One scatter is randomly chosen after a battle and transforms into the other’s symbol so that all scatters match before the Re-Spins begin. Two differing scatters is a straight coin flip, 50/50 on which warlord wins.
Two of one kind plus a third of another tilts it: the paired symbol wins the battle 75% of the time. Three different scatters, all three warlords at once, gives each an equal chance of coming out on top.
During the Re-Spins the active scatters lock where they sit and every other symbol goes inactive. There are no bet-line wins during them, and scatters can appear on all five reels while they run. Additional Re-Spins can be activated as more scatters land.
That’s the round’s engine. Each new scatter that holds in place pushes you closer to the third one and the free spins beyond it, and the locked scatters mean a partial collection survives spin after spin rather than resetting.
Barbarian, Priestess and Samurai Free Spins
The warlord who wins the battle decides the round you play. Each scatter that starts the sequence brings its own opening gift: 3 free spins, 1 multiplier, or 1 sticky wild. The free spins game itself is determined by the type of scatters on the reels, and in the Samurai’s case, by their position as well.
The order of events matters. Scatters land, the battle resolves if the types clash, the survivors lock and the Re-Spins chase a third scatter, and only then does the warlord’s round begin with its grant of spins, multiplier or sticky wild. Nothing is awarded until the argument is settled.
That starting grant looks thin on paper, and it is thin: the initial scatters each reward their corresponding feature, which is either 3 free spins, 1 multiplier or 1 sticky wild. The three rounds are genuinely different games rather than one round in three colours.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.8/10
This is a slow-burn game with one great set piece. Most of a session is spent grinding a thin paytable while you wait for two scatters to argue, and the argument itself, the battle that decides your bonus round, is the reason to sit through it. The dusk-lit battlefield earns its mood; nothing here feels cheap.
The battle system is the strength, because it makes the trigger itself the drama rather than a formality on the way to free spins. The weakness is the base game: five of the best character pays just 20x the bet, so the reels between battles are close to filler.
It’s for players who want their features to have a story and can accept a modest grind to get them. Anyone chasing frequent hits and fat line pays will find the mist too thick. For everyone else, there are worse evenings than watching three warlords fight over your bonus round.
