Welcome back to the Wild West where there’s gold to be found. Saddle up and dust off those spurs and ride horseback straight into the action with Just for the Win’s newest and highly volatile cowboy inspired adventure, Western Gold Slot.
Western Gold Slot was developed by Just for the Win, a Casino Software Provider partnered with Microgaming with an emphasis on creating great games compatible for desktop and Mobile casinos.
They strive to be a leader in the online video games market, and had a hand in making the electric Immortal Glory. Microgaming themselves are also a big player in the world of slots, and have brought many a memorable title in the past with instalments like Immortal Romance.
Two great providers, but the Western theme is arguably the most renowned and most used theme of games in the market, but how does it compare?
Heading West
Western Gold Slot has very much of what you might expect from a Western themed game. In the background you’ll see plains of desert and prominent canyons in a vast and unforgiving landscape. Very typical, but it conveys the theme well despite its minimalistic backdrop.
The music as an upbeat and classic Western instrumental that is quite catchy, and it really sets the mood for yet another venture west. Situated in the middle of course is the reels, which is bordered with gold, hopefully a sign of imminent riches.
Betting and Symbols
There’s a multitude of betting options available to cover all needs, with the lowest available being £0.20. For those who want to throw their hat in the ring for a bigger share of the plunder, there are many options above this, with the highest available bet being £25 per spin.
As far as symbols go, Western Gold utilizes some symbols maybe more reminiscent of a classic era of slots, with the highest paying regular symbol being portrayed by the triple 7 symbol, which will pay 30x your stake for a line of 5.
Next up is the triple Bar symbol, which will pay 17.50x for 5, followed by the double bar, which pays 12.5x Single Bar pays 10x, and any combination of the triple, double and single in a line of 5 will pay 3x your bet.
Lower paying symbols stick more to the character of the game, with the two revolvers and hat equal in value for 1.5x for 5, and the lowest paying symbols are the boots and the whip, which pay 1x for 5.
The game also features a Wild symbol, which is identical in value to the top symbol of the game, and will substitute for any symbol except the Horseshoe and the Free Game symbols.
The Base Game
Western Gold Slot utilizes a classic payline mechanic, of which there are 40. Paylines are all active at all times, regardless of the stake you choose.
All wins pay from left to right, and will hit when 3 or more matching symbols land on consecutive reels, starting from the left-most reel along any of the set paylines.
Western Gold Slot is a typical slot in the sense that there are no Base Game features to speak of, but the potential is still there to land some nice wins by matching some premiums.
Scatter Pays
Western Gold Slot features a Scatters Pay mechanic, and they’re not quite Scatter Symbols in the traditional sense that will trigger free games.
Above the reel you’ll notice a wheel that outlines varying values detailing the amount of scatters and the win awarded for landing that number. At least 4 Scatters are needed, and it will pay out when the spin is complete
- 4 Scatters – 1x
- 5 Scatters – 5x
- 6 Scatters – 15x
- 7 Scatters – 25x
- 8 Scatters – 50x
- 9 Scatters – 100x
- 10 Scatters – 250x
- 11 Scatters – 1000x
- 12 Scatters – 10,000x
10,000x is the maximum win available in Western Gold, and is a whopping amount to be awarded if you are lucky enough to land 12 Scatters on the reels.
Free Spins
Free Spins is a sort of variant of the Scatters Pay mechanic. Free Spins symbols only appear on reels 2,3 and 4, and 3 spins are awarded.
In Free Spins, Scatters do not pay immediately like they would in the base game if 4 are more are present, these are collected instead. A maximum of 12 can be collected, and the spins will be reset to 3 if one or more Scatters are collected.
The Scatter pay is awarded when the feature is complete and will pay based on the total number of Scatters collected.
Our Verdict
Western Gold Slot is simple yet charming game with some big online slots potential. The Base Game can lack some substance, but is saved by the fact that the game constantly displays is huge potential in the form of the Scatter Pays wheel at the top of the reel.
You’ll constantly be able to see how many scatters are needed for what pay-out and it will make for an exciting time when a few lands on the reel and the remaining reels start slow rolling as you sit and hope for more to land.
The Free Games feature also further enhances that chance at landing one of the big pay outs, with a live system that will accumulate scatter symbols and reset the spins back to 3 when you land one.
Overall, there isn’t too much bad to say about the game. It’s certainly not anything ground breaking, and it doesn’t display any new or quirky features that we haven’t seen from games before.
It’s something that up and coming Just for the Win can be proud of, and it really makes you wonder just what we’ll see next from these developers.
