Wild Skullz

Wild Skullz Slot Review

Flames lick up beside a chain-wrapped stone frame crowned with brass skulls, while a zombie guitarist in corpse paint and a spiked leather vest leans in from the right. Strip away the garish neon rock-poster art and Wild Skullz is a game built almost entirely on one symbol: the wild carries every multiplier, every feature and nearly every meaningful win, and the symbols around it are mostly there to be substituted for. That’s a bold way to build a slot, and it’s what makes this one worth a closer look.

Pragmatic Play run it on a 5×3 grid with 243 ways to win, at 96.44% RTP and high volatility, with stakes from 0.20 to 240. It sits in similar wild-first territory to Hellvis Wild and Crank It Up, two of the studio’s other rock-flavoured outings. The encore is where the money is on this stage.

Base Game & Features

Wins pay across 243 ways rather than fixed lines, so any matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left count, regardless of position. It’s the standard all-ways setup for a 5×3 grid, and it means three of a kind is rarely far away.

The symbol set splits into two tiers. The premiums are the band’s instruments, led by the Guitar and followed by the Drums, Microphone and Keyboard, and the royals fill the bottom of the table. The gap between the tiers is wide: five Guitars pay more than six times what five Aces return.

The royals cluster tightly together at the bottom, with five of a kind paying 1x for K and Q and 0.75x for J and 10. Between the tiers, four of a kind tells the same story: 4x on the Guitar against 0.7x on the Ace, a gap that widens as you climb.

The paytable, as multiples of stake for three, four and five of a kind:

• Guitar: 2x / 4x / 6.25x
• Drums: 1.5x / 3.5x / 5x
• Microphone: 1.25x / 2.5x / 3.75x
• Keyboard: 0.75x / 1.5x / 2.5x
• A: 0.4x / 0.7x / 1.25x
• K: 0.35x / 0.6x / 1x
• Q: 0.3x / 0.5x / 1x
• J: 0.25x / 0.4x / 0.75x
• 10: 0.2x / 0.3x / 0.75x

Expanded Wild

The Expanded Wild is the game’s centrepiece, and it does the usual wild job of substituting for everything except the Scatter. It lands on reels 2, 3, 4 or 5, counts as a single symbol on whichever reel it hits, and only one can appear per spin.

What makes it worth watching is the multiplier. Each Expanded Wild arrives with a random value from a fixed ladder that doubles at every step:

• 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x, 64x, 128x, 256x, 512x

When the wild forms part of a winning combination, its multiplier applies to every combination it’s part of. A 512x wild in the right place is the base game’s whole reason to keep spinning. Even the bottom rung is useful: a 2x wild paired with a modest Guitar win lifts it above what the symbol pays alone.

Special Bets

Two modified stakes sit alongside the standard bet, both changing how the features behave:

• Ante Bet (100x): makes the Free Spins trigger ten times more likely to hit.
• Super Spin (200x): guarantees at least one Expanded Wild on every spin, but Free Spins can’t trigger while it’s active.

The choice between them is a genuine fork. Ante Bet chases the bonus round, trading a higher cost per spin for a much shorter wait. Super Spin turns the base game itself into the feature, at the cost of ever reaching free spins.

That second trade matters more than it looks. With an Expanded Wild guaranteed on every Super Spin spin, the multiplier ladder is in play constantly, but the round where multipliers grow fastest is the one you’ve given up access to.

Wild Skullz Free Spins & Bonus Buys

Free Spins

Three Scatter symbols trigger the round, which doesn’t run to a fixed spin count. Instead, the length of the feature depends entirely on where the wild is and how long it survives.

On the first spin, an Expanded Wild hits on reel 5. With each free spin that follows, it moves one reel to the left: 5, then 4, then 3, then 2, then 1. It arrives without a multiplier.

The multiplier grows from there. After any spin where the wild was involved in at least one win, its multiplier increases to 2x, and it doubles again on every subsequent win-involved spin. A wild that keeps paying is a wild that keeps doubling.

During free spins the Scatter can only land on reel 5. When it does, it sends the Expanded Wild back to reel 5 from wherever it’s got to, and the walk starts again. The round ends when the wild reaches reel 1 and no Scatter is present on reel 5. Special reels are in play throughout.

So the shape of a good round is a loop: keep the wild winning so its multiplier doubles, keep landing the reel 5 Scatter so it never runs out of road. A wild that reaches reel 4 or 3 with a multiplied value stacked up is where the round pays.

The loop also explains the round’s built-in end. Every pass across the five reels without a Scatter is five spins closer to the finish, so a run of quiet spins ends the feature even when nothing has gone wrong. The Scatter is doing double duty here: it’s both the retrigger and the only thing standing between the wild and the exit.

Bonus Buy

Two buys are on offer from the base game, and the expensive one is the interesting one:

• Buy Free Spins: 100x total bet, triggers the standard round instantly.
• Buy Super Free Spins: 600x total bet, triggers the round with the Expanded Wild’s starting multiplier set to 32x.

Six times the price for a 32x head start is a steep ask, but it changes the arithmetic of the round completely. A wild that starts at 32x and doubles on its first win-involved spin is already at 64x before the walk has properly begun.

Our Honest Verdict

Overall Rating: 7.7/10

This is a slot you play for the encore, and you’ll know within a few spins of the base game whether you’re willing to wait for it. Between wild hits there isn’t much to do: the paytable tops out at 6.25x, so the walk to the bonus is the show, not the warm-up.

When the free spins do land, though, they’re the best thing here by some distance. The walking wild gives the round a shape most bonuses don’t have: every spin moves it somewhere, every Scatter pulls it back, and a lucky loop can stack a doubling multiplier on a wild that hasn’t finished paying.

The weakness is everything outside that round. The wild carries nearly all the win potential, and the base game is thin without it. It suits players who like a mechanic that builds and don’t mind high volatility while it builds; anyone who wants steady wins from the reels themselves will find this stage too quiet between headliners.
