Wisdom of Athena Slot Review
Athena presides over her own slot with the fixed patience of a goddess who has watched a thousand tumbles come and go, while the urns, scrolls and gems on her grid do the actual work. Wisdom of Athena is Pragmatic Play‘s scatter-pays take on ancient Greece, one of several games the studio has built on this chassis.
It runs a 6×5 grid where symbols pay anywhere, with a 96.07% RTP, low volatility and a maximum win capped at 5,000x the bet. Gates of Olympus and Starlight Princess are the obvious sisters, and Sweet Bonanza runs the same maths in a different costume.
The locked sixth row is the interesting part. The full grid only appears after the longest tumble chains, and everything else about the game is built around getting you there.
Base Game & Features
Symbols pay anywhere on the screen. There are no paylines and no ways count; what matters is how many copies of one symbol are visible when a spin settles. Eight or more of a kind is the entry point for every paying symbol, and wins are multiples of the total bet. Bets run from 0.20 to 240.00 per spin.
The paytable, in multiples of the total bet:
- Gold Coin (lion face) – 8-9 pays 5x, 10-11 pays 10x, 12-14 pays 20x, 15-30 pays 50x
- Red Helmet – 8-9 pays 2.5x, 10-11 pays 5x, 12-14 pays 10x, 15-30 pays 25x
- Purple Urn – 8-9 pays 1.5x, 10-11 pays 3x, 12-14 pays 6x, 15-30 pays 15x
- Green Scroll – 8-9 pays 1x, 10-11 pays 2x, 12-14 pays 4x, 15-30 pays 10x
- Red Circle – 8-9 pays 0.75x, 10-11 pays 1.5x, 12-14 pays 3x, 15-30 pays 7.5x
- Pink Mask – 8-9 pays 0.5x, 10-11 pays 1x, 12-14 pays 2x, 15-30 pays 5x
- Blue Crossed Swords – 8-9 pays 0.4x, 10-11 pays 0.75x, 12-14 pays 1.5x, 15-30 pays 4x
- Purple Emblem – 8-9 pays 0.3x, 10-11 pays 0.5x, 12-14 pays 1x, 15-30 pays 3x
- Green Emblem – 8-9 pays 0.25x, 10-11 pays 0.4x, 12-14 pays 0.75x, 15-30 pays 2.5x
- Scatter (Athena head) – 4 pays 2x, 5 pays 15x, 6 pays 100x
There is no wild in this game. The Scatter does everything a special symbol needs to: it sits on all reels, pays from any position, and refuses to explode during tumbles, staying on screen until the whole sequence from one spin has finished.
Tumble Feature
After every spin, winning symbols disappear and everything left falls to the bottom. New symbols drop in from above, and the process repeats for as long as new wins keep forming. There’s no limit on how many tumbles one spin can run.
All wins from a spin’s tumbles are added together and paid once the sequence ends. Wins with multiple symbols all stack into the same total.
The Locked Row
Above the basic 6×5 grid sits a sixth row of positions, and it starts locked. Tumbles from the same spin unlock those positions one at a time, left to right. Any position that unlocks fills with symbols and stays in play until the sequence ends.
The unlock schedule runs on a steep curve. Reel one’s position opens after the first tumble, then each subsequent reel takes three more tumbles than the last: reel two after three more, reel three after six more, and so on until reel six opens after fifteen more.
In practice most spins never see the full six-row grid, because reaching reel six means a chain of at least sixteen tumbles from a single spin.
Multiplier Symbols
Multiplier symbols can land randomly during spins and tumbles, in the base game and in free spins alike. Each one takes a value from 2x up to 500x. When a tumbling sequence ends, all multiplier values on screen are added together and the total win of that sequence is multiplied by the final figure.
In the base game that total applies to a single sequence. It’s a different story in the bonus round, where the multipliers never reset.
Wisdom of Athena Free Spins & Bonus Features
Free Spins
Four or more Scatter symbols anywhere on the screen award the free spins round, which starts with 10 free spins. Special reels are in play during the feature.
The locked row begins the round fully locked, and every tumble during the round counts towards unlocking it. Once a position unlocks, it stays unlocked for the rest of the round, so a long early sequence permanently widens the grid you’re playing on.
Multipliers change behaviour here. Every multiplier symbol that hits adds its value to a running total, and that total multiplies every win for the whole round. A few early values keep paying on every spin that follows, which is where the big rounds come from.
Three or more Scatters landing during the round award 5 additional free spins. And if the total win of a round reaches 5,000x the bet, the round ends immediately, the win is awarded and any remaining features are forfeited.
Ante Bet
The ante bet raises the stake to a 25x bet multiplier and increases the chance of triggering free spins naturally, by adding more Scatter symbols to the reels. It disables the buy option while it’s active. The 20x multiplier is normal play.
Buy Free Spins
The free spins round can be bought from the base game for 100x the current total bet. On the triggering spin, four, five or six Scatters can land at random. The RTP sits at 96.08% when playing the ante bet or the buy option, against 96.07% in normal play.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
This is a long, steady climb rather than a cliff edge. Low volatility means the small scatter-pays wins arrive regularly, the tumble chains run often enough to keep the base game moving, and the locked sixth row gives every long chain a destination worth reaching. The running multiplier in free spins is the engine of the whole design: a round that finds early values keeps compounding, and because unlocked rows persist, a good start makes everything after it better.
The ceiling is the price of that gentleness. A 5,000x cap is modest for the format, and the unlock curve is steep: reel six needs sixteen tumbles from one spin, so most of the time you’re playing a five-row grid and the full board is a rare visitor. The 1000 sequel exists precisely because this ceiling felt low.
It suits players who like scatter-pays mechanics without the punishing stretches, and sessions where the balance drifts down slowly rather than vanishing in ten spins. Chasers hunting the format’s biggest ceilings will find Athena’s wisdom a little too cautious, but there’s real craft in how gently it gets there.
