Pirate Golden Age Slot Review 2024

We’re taking to the seas in Pirate Golden Age by Pragmatic Play where adventures, and hopefully loot, await.

Pirate Golden Age wouldn’t be the first time Pragmatic has dabbled in the Pirate Genre, with Pirate Gold and Pirate Gold Deluxe as predecessors to this title.

If we remember rightly, there wasn’t anything Deluxe about Pirate Gold Deluxe at all. It seemed as if it was actually a worse version of their original game, but with a misleading title to make you think they’ve upped the ante.

Will Pirate Golden Age give us that adventurous spirit so synonymous with the idea of pirates, or will we furl the sails and call it a day?

Let’s have a look.

Pirate Golden Age Base Game

Pirate Golden Age Base Game and Features

Pirate Golden Age is a 5 reel slot with 20 fixed paylines. Winning combinations are formed when 3 or more of the same symbol types land from left to right, starting from the left-most reel.

The minimum bet available here is £/€0.20 per spin and the maximum bet available is £/€100 per spin, with plenty of other betting options in between the two. Pirate Golden Age has a theoretical RTP of 96.49% and a maximum win capacity of 3,000x.

In terms of symbols, the highest paying regular symbol in Pirate Golden Age is the Red Pirate, followed by the Purple Pirate, Blue Priate, Parrot, Anchor and Bomb. Low-paying symbols are standard Ace, King, Queen and Jack. There is also a Wild symbol present which substitutes for all symbols except Scatters.

In this part of the review, we learn more about what’s on offer in the base game through features and modifiers, but sadly you won’t find any of the sort here. Although the base game seems a little dry, there is a Free Spins round available which introduces Mystery Symbols to the reels. More on this below!

Pirate Golden Age Free Spins

Landing 3, 4 or 5 Scatters across the reels triggers the Free Spins round, awarding 7 Free Spins and a payout of 2x, 20x or 200x your current bet respectively.

During Free Spins, each time a Mystery symbol in the form of a Gold Skull lands in view it will be collected in a Treasure Chest Meter on the right side of the screen. At the end of each Free Spin, the total number of Mystery symbols collected will float around the reel set, fixing themselves in random positions across the reels.

If more than 1 Mystery symbol lands in the same position as another, a Multiplier value is applied which increases by +1 for each Mystery symbol that lands on top of it. During this time, additional Mystery symbols can land which will also be collected and join the others as they float around the reels between spins.

For every 5 Mystery symbols that land, an additional +1, +2 or +3 Free Spins are awarded.

Pirate Golden Age: Our Verdict

We’d love to sing the praises of Pirate Golden Age, but in all honesty there’s not too much to praise.

We’re a big fan of the pirate genre and many other slots has coupled the theme with invigorating gameplay, but Pirate Golden Age doesn’t seem to be one of them. It has a very dry and uninteresting Base Game, and the Free Spins round is an unimaginative reimagining of features used before in other Pragmatic titles.

Pirate Golden Age could have been a lot more with more features, and bigger potential. The usual Pragmatic win cap seems to sit around 5,000x, but Pirate Golden Age is 3,000x, and it’s hard to imagine a scenario where it could even pull that off.

Overall, Pirate Golden Age certainly looks nice, but it’s quite forgettable in the grand scheme of things.
