When you think back to the 1980s, some of the best music artists spring to mind, including Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Freddie Mercury. Sadly, these artists, and many others from this era, are not with us anymore, but their music will live on in future generations.
Thanks to leading software provider, AvatarUX, the 1980s will live on in their latest PopWins title, 80’sPop. While this game does not feature our beloved popstars from this era, it does feature an unmistakable 80s vibe, which is not the only retro thing happening here!
Base Game & Features
Available to play across 5 reels and 3 rows, 80’sPop features 486 ways to win and varying bet sizes. The number of ways to win can increase to a maximum of 65,536 thanks to the forever-popular PopWins mechanic.
Wins are produced when 3 or more matching symbols land anywhere on adjacent reels, from left to right or right to left. Paytable symbols include a number of Low-paying musical notes and High-paying musician and star symbols.
Payouts for each symbol vary, but they can award anywhere between 0.2x and 4x your bet. Other noteworthy attributes include a High Volatility rating, an overall RTP of 96.06%, and an impressive max win cap of 20,000x your bet.
Through the PopWins mechanic, winning symbols are removed and replaced with +2 new symbols, increasing the reel height. This process repeats until no new winning combinations are created. In the base game, the maximum reel height is 6, while in Free Spins the maximum reel outcome is 8.
Base Game Multiplier
In the base game, each time the reel heights increase, a special Multiplier is unlocked to the left of the main reel set. The multiplier holds until no winning combinations occur in that spin. In addition, the Free Spins round is automatically triggered at this time.
Bonus Buy
Non-UK players can purchase the Free Spins round via the Bonus Buy option for an additional 85x their current bet. This guarantees 5 Free Spins and a chance to gamble for more.

Free Spins
Once you’ve triggered the free spins, you’ll be guaranteed 5 Free Spins, but you’ll have a chance to spin the Bonus Wheel for more rewards. There are two bonus wheel levels, with the first level offering 0-4 Free Spins and the second level offering 0-5 more Free Spins.
The reel height begins at 3 in the free spins but can grow as high as 8 thanks to the PopWins mechanic. Unlike in the base game, the reel height doesn’t fully reset in the free spins, but rather only resets down to the shortest reel height across all reels.
The free spins multiplier begins with the multiplier value from the base game and doesn’t reset. Instead, it grows by +x1 for each winning round during the free spins.
In the free spins bonus round, there are special star payouts, which are as follows:
- 2x star payouts are active when the reels are 6 high
- 3x star payouts are active when the reels are 7 high
- 4x star payouts are active when the reels are 8 high

Our Verdict
It’s an unfortunate situation we find ourselves in – on one hand, 80’sPop is a classic game which takes us on a trip down memory lane, but on the other, it’s a carbon copy of all other PopWins titles, with no new additions or advantages. To put it bluntly, all you need to do is decide which genre (or era in this case) you fancy and go for it, especially when each of the PopWins titles shares strong similarities.
If you’re a big fan of the PopWins collection, you’ll find 80’sPop to be a safe and sufficient option, but we feel that AvatarUX plays this series a little too safe these days. The 80s was a big era for many people – the big hair, colourful outfits, and the recognition of many legendary musicians, but AvatarUX has missed the opportunity to create something great.
80’sPop offers a High Volatility rating, along with a respectable 96.01% RTP, and an equally impressive max win cap of 20,000x your bet. If we’re completely honest, these statistics are the only thing that does the game any justice.
We have always admired AvatarUX and their nifty PopWins mechanic, but after so many carbon copies, we had hoped that 2025 would be the year for some positive tweaks and adjustments – maybe next time?
