Base Game & Features
Displayed as a standard 5-reel Video Slot, Mermaid Mighty Reels begins with 3 active rows per reel, with an additional 3 rows locked above. The game offers a variation of bet sizes between £.€0.10 and £.€10 per spin, as well as a Low Volatility rating, an overall RTP of 96%, and a max win cap of 2,064x your bet.
Wins occur when 3 or more matching symbols land from left to right, starting from the leftmost reel. There are 4 High and Low-paying symbols, not including the Mermaid symbols, each producing payouts between 0.5x and 100x your bet.
Mermaid Wilds & Pearl Symbols
Special Mermaid Wilds can appear on all reels, substituting for all symbols except Scatters and Pearl symbols. These symbols cover 2 positions on the reels and will fully expand to activate the top 3 locked rows.
If additional Mermaid Wilds are revealed once the rows are unlocked, they will also fully expand to cover the entire reel. Mermaid Wilds that are partially in view will substitute for all symbols but do not expand, except in Free Spins.
Pearl symbols appear on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5, generating a random Cash Value between 0.5x and 10x your bet. Each expanded Mermaid Wild will collect the values of all Pearl symbols in view throughout the base game and Free Spins round.
Premium Play
Activating the Premium Play feature will increase your current bet by 50%. When active, any wins greater than 2.5x your bet will award the Premium Play Bonus. When the Premium Play Bonus is triggered, a special Wheel will display the following outcomes:
- Multipliers between x1 and x5
- Four individual Free Spins segments
The Free Spins round will be awarded in exchange for the triggering win. If the winning result from Free Spins is less than the triggering win, a Bonus Guarantee will make up the shortfall. Alternatively, landing on a Multiplier segment will multiply the triggering win.
Gamble Mode
When the Gamble Mode is active and 5x your bet or greater is won, the Gamble Feature will trigger. If Premium Play is also active, the Gamble feature will trigger at 2.5x your bet. The Gamble feature will display 2 options:

- Gamble entry into Free Spins
Each option displays a dial with a Cash Value or number of Free Spins that can be won. The probability of winning is represented in Green. Both dials can be increased or decreased by altering the dial accordingly.
A winning gamble will increase the current win or number of Free Spins to the value shown on the meters. Please be aware that unsuccessful gambles will result in a loss outcome.
Free Spins
Landing 3 Scatters on reels 3, 4, and 5 in the base game triggers the Free Spins mode, awarding 8 Free Spins.
During Free Spins, all partially or fully visible Mermaid Wilds will unlock the top 3 rows and expand to fill the entire reel. If the top 3 rows reveal additional Mermaid Wilds, they too will expand. Each expanded wild will collect the values of all Pearl symbols in view.
Landing 3 Scatters will award an additional +8 Free Spins. Please note, that all Mermaid Wilds expanded at the time of triggering Free Spins will be deactivated at the start of the feature.
Our Verdict
Each Light & Wonder release tends to look a little more dated than it is thanks to the classic vibe they portray in the design. Mermaid Mighty Reels has a classic appeal with modern mechanics and features that are both diverse and captivating.
Unlike the Mighty Ways mechanic, this game allows players to unlock additional rows through expanding Mermaid Wild symbols – known as the Mighty Reels mechanic. Mermaid Wilds collect cash prizes from Pearl symbols, along with any others that may unlock as a result of the extra rows.
Having the Premium Play feature active guarantees entry into the Premium Play Bonus, but only when a win exceeds 2.5x your bet. This mini bonus is a great way to increase wins or gain entry into Free Spins. Another interesting element is the Gamble Feature, which allows players to risk their current win for a higher outcome. If you’re not a big risk-taker, the gamble feature can be turned on and off at your own volition.
In Free Spins, Mermaid Wilds that are both partially and fully visible will expand to fill the entire reel(s) and unlock the top 3 rows. This creates a sense of security in that all Pearl symbols and their values will be awarded more often. Our only qualm with Mermaid Mighty Reels is the max win cap of 2,064x your bet. This figure is certainly not the worst we’ve seen, but it’s not the most compelling either.
