Astronaut Slot Review
A tiny astronaut drifts on a tether against a purple nebula, chrome landing pads firing turquoise light up through a moonlit cockpit. Astronaut makes a bet most slots never risk: it throws out the reels, the paytable and the bonus rounds, and puts everything on one repeated choice between pushing on and banking what you’ve got. It’s a slot where the spin barely matters and the button does.
Astronaut runs at 95.69% RTP with stakes from 0.10 to 50 per spin, and its maximum win is 48,000x the stake. The hit frequency is 9.86%. There’s no second screen and no bonus round to wait for; everything the game has, it puts in front of you on every single spin.
It’s a strange neighbour for the studio behind Dragon’s Mirror and Rocket Men, closer to a push-your-luck arcade game than a conventional slot. The ladder is waiting.
One Reel and a Twenty-Step Ladder
Only three symbols can land on Astronaut’s single reel: the Green Crystal, the Red Crystal and the Golden Shield. The chance of each appears above the reel as a percentage, rounded to one decimal place, and the figure shown for the Green Crystal applies to the Golden Shield as well.
The object of the game is to collect green crystals, climb a twenty-step, ladder-style paytable and cash out before a red crystal ends the round. Each rung pays a multiple of the stake, so the ladder is doing the work a paytable full of symbols does elsewhere.
The odds aren’t fixed, either. Every green crystal that lands nudges the chance of a red one upward, so the percentages above the reel tighten as a round goes on. A climb that felt comfortable at level 3 is a different proposition at level 12, and the game keeps the shifting numbers in plain view the whole time.
The ladder’s first fifteen rungs pay as follows, with the Advanced figure applying once a Golden Shield has been broken for the first time in a round:
- Level 1: 1.16x (Advanced 1.16x)
- Level 2: 1.54x (Advanced 1.62x)
- Level 3: 1.92x (Advanced 2.12x)
- Level 4: 2.6x (Advanced 2.98x)
- Level 5: 3.46x (Advanced 3.84x)
- Level 6: 4.8x (Advanced 5.38x)
- Level 7: 6.82x (Advanced 7.68x)
- Level 8: 9.6x (Advanced 10.08x)
- Level 9: 14.44x (Advanced 15.36x)
- Level 10: 20.64x (Advanced 23.04x)
- Level 11: 31.68x (Advanced 34.56x)
- Level 12: 51.84x (Advanced 59.52x)
- Level 13: 91x (Advanced 101x)
- Level 14: 154x
- Level 15: 298x (Advanced 346x)
Notice the shape of the numbers. The first five rungs barely clear your stake back, the middle of the ladder climbs steeply from level 9’s 14.44x to level 12’s 51.84x, and the last third of the twenty steps is where a round stops being about recovery and starts being about a genuine result. The five rungs above level 15 climb on from 298x, and they’re where the real money on this ladder lives.
The Advanced column is worth reading closely, because the upgrade is not uniform. On rungs 1 and 3 the boost is modest, moving 1.92x to 2.12x; on rung 5 it’s 3.46x to 3.84x; and from rung 6 upward the Advanced figure consistently pays around 10% more than the base one. The shield’s value, in other words, is concentrated in the middle and upper ladder, which is exactly where a round gets tense.
Crystals, Shields and the Climb
Green Crystal
Each Green Crystal that lands moves you one step up the ladder. After every one, you choose whether to Continue, Take Half or Collect. It’s the only symbol that helps you, and it carries the game’s built-in tension: the more of them that land, the closer the red crystal gets.
Red Crystal
The Red Crystal is the round-ender. Without an active Golden Shield, it stops the game on contact, forfeits every stacked win that hasn’t been cashed out and sends the ladder back to level 1. There’s no partial save and no second chance; the round is over.
With a shield active, the same symbol does something almost opposite. It breaks the shield and increases the next prizes on the ladder, and you choose again from the level reached. The one symbol that punishes you is also, in the right circumstances, the one that pays you more.
Golden Shield
Landing the Golden Shield activates protection against the next Red Crystal and starts automatic spins. While the shield holds, no decisions are made after green crystals land, because there’s nothing to lose; the game plays itself and the ladder fills. Once a red crystal breaks the shield, the automatic spins stop and the choices return.
The shield does one more thing worth knowing. The first Red Crystal to hit an active shield in a round upgrades the ladder to Advanced multipliers, and the increase applies to every rung you haven’t reached yet. Breaking a shield is a setback that also sweetens the remaining climb, which makes the shield’s lifespan the most interesting stretch of any round.
Continue, Take Half or Collect
After every Green Crystal, the same three buttons appear, and they’re the entire skill surface of the game:
- Continue: stay in the round and play on with 100% of your potential winnings
- Take Half: cash out 50% of your potential winnings and carry on with the remaining half, offered only once your accumulated win is 1.0 or more in your playing currency
- Collect: cash out everything and end the round
Halving on the way up lets you bank a return while still chasing the upper rungs, and the 1.0 threshold means the option opens early: at level 1 the rung already pays 1.16x, so Take Half is available from the very first green crystal at most stakes. It’s the tool that turns a doomed climb into something that still paid.
The arithmetic changes as you climb. Halving at level 9 banks half of 14.44x while risking the other half; halving at level 12 banks half of 51.84x on the same risk. Because Take Half leaves the full ladder position intact, banking early costs nothing in progress; it only shrinks the amount still on the table.
The odds sit above the reel the whole time, so every Continue is a gamble you can price. That’s the loop in full: a symbol falls, the ladder moves, the percentages shift, and three buttons ask what you’re holding your nerve for.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.7/10
Playing Astronaut is a string of small held breaths, one symbol falling at a time, and that pacing is the whole reason to pick it. You’re not waiting for a bonus; you’re deciding, over and over, whether the rung under your feet is high enough.
Its best trick is honesty. The odds sit above the reel and the ladder pays are always visible, so every push upward is a gamble you can price rather than a prayer. That’s rarer than it should be.
The cost is that the reel itself is a quiet place. One symbol and three buttons leave long stretches with nothing to watch but your own nerve, and a red crystal after a deep climb wipes the lot.
It’s a good home for players who like banking as they go and savouring each decision; anyone who wants reels full of symbols and a bonus to chase will find the cockpit empty. For the patient type, there’s plenty of space up here.
