Book of Atem Slot Review
A carved stone doorway stands ajar at the edge of a sunlit Egyptian courtyard, hieroglyphs fading up its jamb and palm fronds crowding in from the corners. Book of Atem hides its entire personality behind that doorway: strip the warm, painterly art away and you’re left with a game that asks one symbol to be wild, scatter and bonus trigger all at once, and stakes everything on a single free spins round. Nothing else in it matters half as much, and that’s the argument of this game in a sentence.
It’s a 5×3 grid with 10 permanently enabled paylines, 96.45% RTP, high volatility, and stakes from 0.10 to 25.00 per spin. All For One Studios built it, and the studio’s shelf also holds Book of Captain Silver and Forgotten Island Megaways. Wins land on roughly 29.8% of spins. Jungle light, old arithmetic.
Base Game & Features
There are 10 paylines, all live on every spin, paying left to right from the first reel. Only the highest combination counts on each line, and scatter wins are added on top of regular ones. It’s the classic compact setup, and the game doesn’t decorate it with anything extra in the base game.
The core payout rules in brief:
- Your bet per payline is your total bet divided by the number of paylines
- Regular wins pay left to right from the first reel on an enabled payline
- Only the highest regular combination is paid per payline
- Only one scatter combination is paid per spin, the highest
- Scatter and bonus wins are added to regular wins
- Regular payouts scale with your bet per payline; scatter payouts with your total bet
Each spin resolves simply. Matching regular symbols must sit next to each other on an enabled payline; if a winning combination lands, it’s highlighted on the reels, and if it doesn’t, the spin is over and the next one starts. No second stage, no pick screens, nothing to interrupt the rhythm.
The Book symbol is the wild and the scatter at once: it substitutes for other symbols to complete wins, it doesn’t need to sit on an enabled payline to pay, and it forms its own winning combinations. Because scatter payouts depend on the total bet rather than the line bet, a Book-heavy spin can pay whether or not the lines produce anything.
Its pay tiers, as multiples of the total bet:
- Three Books: 2x the total bet
- Four Books: 20x the total bet
- Five Books: 200x the total bet
Book of Atem doesn’t publish per-symbol values for its regular symbols, so there’s no paytable walkthrough to give. The royals and the Egyptian motif symbols (pharaoh, snake, bird, flower) fill the reels as usual, and wins highlight on the grid when they land. All paytable figures shown are based on your current bet, so the displayed values move with your stake.
One small extra lives in the payout table: an achievements tracker that highlights symbol combinations as you win them. Win every combination for a given symbol and that symbol stays highlighted. What counts is tightly defined:
- Regular symbol wins are logged as achievements
- Wild symbol substitute wins are not logged
- Free spins wins are not logged
- Completed highlights persist after you exit the game
Autoplay is on hand with configurable win and loss limits, so a session can stop itself at a single win of a set size or a set drop in balance. You pick your bet level and the number of spins when you start, the remaining count is displayed throughout, and you can stop the session at any point. Quick spin and a stop button speed up the display without affecting the results of a spin.
Book of Atem Free Spins & Expanding Symbols
Three or more scatter Books anywhere on the reels award 10 free spins. The round works like this:
- Trigger: three or more scatter Book symbols anywhere on the reels
- Award: 10 free spins
- Bet: your last placed bet carries over as the free spins bet
- Collection: winnings are collected automatically
- Retrigger: three or more scatters during the round add 10 more spins
- Top prize: 270,000.00 at the maximum stake
When the round starts, a random symbol is chosen as the expanding symbol for its duration, and it can’t be the wild scatter. The chosen symbol doesn’t need to sit on adjacent reels, and it doesn’t need to start from the first reel either. It only expands when it completes a winning combination, and every symbol that completes a win expands. Those wins are added to the regular ones.
In practice that means placement matters more than adjacency. A royal on reels two, three and four counts just as a run from the first reel would, and each instance that completes a win expands to fill its reel before the pays are totted up. Line wins and scatter wins during the round still settle under the usual rules, with the expansions added on top.
One restriction shapes the round: the wild scatter doesn’t substitute for the expanding symbol’s winning combinations during free spins. The special symbol stands alone, which is what makes landing it across several reels at once worth so much.
Retriggers don’t change the choice. The same expanding symbol stays in place for the whole round, so a lucky streak can stretch one bonus well past its first 10 spins with a symbol already primed to fill the grid.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7/10
Playing Book of Atem is mostly sitting in a sunlit courtyard waiting for a door to open. The reason to spin it is the oldest one in the book format: the hope that three Books arrive at once and the round that follows pays for the hour of nothing that came before. High volatility makes that wait genuinely long.
Its strength is the expanding symbol, which turns a modest 10-spin award into a game where a single lucky choice can fill the grid and dwarf everything the base game pays. Its weakness is that there’s nothing between bonuses worth writing home about; at high volatility, the gaps can feel cavernous, and the lovely art only fills so much of them.
This one belongs to the classic-book faithful who already know and want exactly this. If a single-feature game sounds thin, it is, and the studio’s busier titles will serve that appetite better. For those happy to wait, the courtyard is one of the nicer places in the genre to do it.
