Buffalo Horizon Slot Review
A log ranger lodge sits among pines and blue mountains, its gabled front carrying the reels, carved pillars incised with bison and pine motifs, a brass lantern hanging from the roof beam and a cluster of weathered trail signs jutting up beside the cabin. On Buffalo Horizon, from 24Karot, the paytable beneath that roof barely matters: with a top symbol worth under 10x, nearly everything this game can actually pay you is decided by the little strip of reels spinning above the lodge.
The unusual part is the Rooftop slot, a second set of reels spinning above the main 5×3, 25-payline grid. It runs at medium volatility, with stakes from 0.10 to 125, and the whole game is built around what that rooftop strip delivers.
Base Game & Features
The main game is a five-reel, three-row grid with 25 fixed paylines. Wins pay left to right across those lines, and only the highest combination on each line counts. It’s a conventional base beneath a very unconventional roof.
The Rooftop Slot
Spinning above the main grid is the Rooftop slot, and everything interesting in this game runs through it. Every spin, that rooftop strip can deliver one of three prizes: a Wild, Ranger Spins, or Free Spins. A Blank result pays nothing.
The Blank symbol can appear in both the base game and free spins modes, and it’s the most common outcome by design. A rooftop that paid out every spin would make the main grid irrelevant, so the strip runs cold more often than not.
The Rooftop Wild expands down into the 5×3 reel set below it, filling the reels beneath with wilds. Expanding Wilds from the rooftop can also substitute for Ranger symbols, which matters, because three Ranger symbols on the Rooftop slot award 3 Ranger Spins with a random locked 3×3 revealed symbol on the centre reels.
The regular Wild appears on the 5×3 grid in both the base game and free spins, substituting for all standard symbols. Rangers appear only on the Rooftop slot and only in the base game.
So the base game offers two wild types, one on each level, while free spins keep the grid wild and swap the rooftop prize ladder for boosters. The rooftop’s role changes with the mode, and it’s the single thread running through the whole game.
In the base game the strip can produce Wilds, Rangers, Free Spins and Blanks. During free spins and Ranger Spins, its job narrows: Rooftop Free Spin symbols land there to extend the round, one spin and one booster at a time.
The paytable is stacked with four buffalo symbols, each tied to a corner of the park, and the values are multiples of stake:
- White Buffalo – 2x for three, 4x for four, 9.4x for five
- Purple Buffalo (Iron Mountain) – 1.6x for three, 3x for four, 8x for five
- Blue Buffalo (Glacier Lake) – 1.2x for three, 2.4x for four, 7.2x for five
- Green Buffalo (Pine Ridge) – 0.8x for three, 2.8x for four, 6.4x for five
The top of that ladder is modest: even five White Buffaloes return less than ten times the stake, and the four-tier buffalo stack steps down gently from there. Note the fourth-tier step, too: four Green Buffaloes pay 2.8x, well above the 1.2x that three Blue Buffaloes manage, so the middle tiers cross over in places rather than running in strict order.
The Rooftop slot exists to bridge that gap, turning a flat paytable into something with more reach. It’s the whole reason the game stands apart from a standard 25-liner.
Buffalo Horizon Free Spins & Ranger Spins
Triggering Free Spins
There are two routes into the round. The first is the Rooftop slot itself, which can award Free Spins directly, with 3 Extra Boosters attached from the off. That’s the premium entry: a round that starts half-built.
The second is the scatter route. Land three or more Free Spin symbols on the main grid and the round begins, with the spin count depending on which symbols landed.
Regular Free Spin symbols award 3 free spins each, while Rooftop Free Spin symbols award 4 free spins and 1 Booster each. A three-symbol trigger built entirely from rooftop versions would open with 12 spins and 3 boosters, already a third of the way to a fully-loaded round.
Free Spin Boosters
Once inside, the free spin mode changes the grid itself: the centre reels spin oversized 3×3 symbols rather than single positions. That’s the canvas the boosters work on, and it’s why the round feels so different from the base game despite using the same reel set.
Each Rooftop Free Spin symbol that lands on the rooftop strip during the round adds 1 extra free spin plus 1 Booster. There are five to collect:
- +2 Extra Free Spins
- Win Both Ways
- 3×3 Symbol Nudge (not available during Ranger Spins)
- x2 Multiplier
- Wild 5th Reel
Each booster patches a different weakness in the round. Win Both Ways pays combinations right-to-left as well as left-to-right, effectively opening the grid from both ends, which matters more than usual when the centre reels carry oversized symbols.
The Wild 5th Reel turns the final reel fully wild, so any buffalo stack on the first four reels connects. The x2 Multiplier doubles what the round pays. The 3×3 Symbol Nudge works with those oversized centre symbols, nudging them into place rather than leaving a near-miss on the middle of the grid.
There’s no stated limit on how many boosters a single round can stack, and the +2 Extra Free Spins booster keeps the strip fed: more spins, more rooftop results, more chances at the next modifier. The round is built to snowball.
Ranger Spins
Ranger Spins are the smaller of the two rounds. Three Ranger symbols on the Rooftop slot start a three-spin sequence, and a single random symbol is locked and revealed as a 3×3 block across the centre reels for its duration.
With nine positions all carrying the same symbol, every spin of the round is hunting for matching stacks on the outer reels. The Nudge booster is off the table here, but Rooftop Free Spin symbols still add spins and boosters during the round, so a lucky run of rooftop results keeps it alive.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
Playing Buffalo Horizon is mostly watching the roof. The main grid pays so little on its own that a spin only really opens up when that little strip above the lodge lands something, and the reason to choose it over any other 25-liner is exactly that: the anticipation of what comes down from the rooftop.
The strength is the free spins round. A trigger that starts with boosters attached and keeps feeding new ones in gives the round room to grow, and the game gives you enough smaller moments to stay warm while you wait for it. The weakness is the flip side: the base paytable is flat to the point of irrelevance, and a session where the rooftop stays cold offers very little at all.
It suits players who like one big idea and don’t mind a quiet build to reach it, and the hand-painted park makes that build easy on the eye. Anyone hunting big base-game hits or a published ceiling will want a different trail. For the patient, the lodge door is open.
