Join us as we put on a brave face and enter the Castle of Terror, where a family of vampires are the hosts.
Castle of Terror Base Game and Features
Castle of Terror is a 6 reel slot with 4,096 ways to win. Winning combinations are formed when 3 or more (or 2 or more of the highest paying symbol) land from left to right, starting from the left-most reel.
The minimum bet available to players is £/€0.20 per spin and the maximum bet available is £/€15 per spin, with a small selection of betting options in between the two. Castle of Terror has a theoretical RTP of 96.72% and a maximum win capacity of 61,720x.
In terms of symbols, all High-paying symbols fall to 4 vampire characters. The Lady with the Purple background has the highest pay value, followed by the Gentleman with the Red background, Maid with the Blue background and Gardener with the Green background. Low-paying symbols are standard Ace, King, Queen, Jack, Ten and Nine. Wild symbols are present during the Holy Water feature and substitute for all other symbols except Scatters.
Holy Water Feature
During any random spin in the base game, there is a chance that the Holy Water feature will randomly trigger.
Once active, 2 or more positions in the middle 4 reels will be splashed with Holy Water. If any of the High-paying symbols land in a position that has been marked with Holy Water, they will automatically transform into Wild symbols and the win Multiplier will increase by +1 per each transformed symbol.
The total win Multiplier is then applied to any winning combinations that have formed during that particular spin, which will then reset for the next paid spin.
Win Exchange
If you happen to win 100x your current bet or more, you will be given the option to exchange your win for 12 Free Spins. This exchange however is not mandatory and you will be given the option to collect your total win if you so choose.
If you win between 25x and 100x your current bet at any time, you will also be able to Gamble your win for 12 Free Spins. Here you will be met with a Wheel with a Green section and Red section.
If you land the cursor in the Green section, the gamble has been successful and you will be awarded either 12 regular Free Spins or 12 Enhanced Free Spins at random. Landing the cursor in the Red section means that the Gamble has not paid off and you walk away without the 12 Free Spins.
Again, this Gamble is not mandatory and you can simply walk away with your total win in tow by clicking the Collect button.
Castle of Terror Free Spins
Landing 3 or more Scatters in any position across the reels triggers the Free Spins round, awarding 12 Free Spins. Any extra Scatters that may land after the 3rd will award an additional +3 Free Spins.
There are 2 types of Scatter symbols available in Castle of Terror, a regular Silver Scatter and a Gold Megascatter that appears only on reel 6. If one of the triggering Scatters is a Gold Megascatter, the Enhanced Free Spins round is awarded.
During the Free Spins round, the Holy Water feature will automatically trigger at the beginning of every spin. The total win Multiplier will start off at x1 and increases by +1 every time a High-paying symbol becomes Wild and does not reset between each spin.
During the Enhanced Free Spins round, the total win Multiplier will start off at x2 and increases by +2 each time a High-paying symbol transforms into a Wild.
Each time the win Multiplier reaches a multiple of 20, an additional +6 Free Spins are awarded.
Castle of Terror Bonus Buy
For those of you who are outside the UK, you will benefit from a Bonus Buy option.
Big Time Gaming has granted players access to the regular Free Spins and Enhanced Free Spins rounds for a total cost of 70x and 200x your current bet respectively. The RTP when purchasing Free Spins increases slightly from 96.72% to 96.73%.
Castle of Terror: Our Verdict
You never know what to expect from a BTG Megaways slot, and Castle of Terror was certainly a surprise.
It looks fine aesthetically, but has BTG really changed much over the years? In some ways they’ve stayed consistent, and Castle of Terror certainly wouldn’t stand out beside Dragon Born which was released years earlier as the first ever Megaways slot. Evidentally Big Time Gaming are quite happy with what they’ve got going, and so are we to be honest.
A fair amount of resource goes into their design, sounds and ideas, but the gameplay is where you’ll see evidence of their collective brain power. Whether drastically or not, Big Time Gaming always give players something a little different with their Megaways slots, and while Castle of Terror is no Max Megaways, it’s still dependable and entertaining.
It’s quite capable according to Big Time Gaming as well, with up to 61,720x as a possible max win. We’re not putting too much faith in anyone ever seeing it to be honest, but we’re not in doubt about Castle of Terror’s capabilities to hit big.
Halloween is around the corner, and Castle of Terror might be just the slot to get you into the spooky spirit.
