ClusterBuck Slot Review
A wooden-framed grid floats in a candy-bright purple void, bubbles drifting past, a golden treasure chest glowing off to one side and a stack of jackpot plaques running down the left edge. Northern Lights Gaming have built ClusterBuck so that its worst spin is never quite a loss: collect enough of any symbol and the game banks that progress, holds some of it for the spin after, and lets a dud nudge six ladders closer to paying. That carried-forward momentum, not the jackpots, is the real reason to play it.
It’s a 6×6 cluster game at 96.05% RTP, medium volatility, hit rate 25.54%, stakes from 0.20 to 20.00, with wins capped at 12 000x the bet. The studio’s catalogue runs from Rock the Cash Bar to Unusual Suspects. Can a game about filling bars carry a whole session?
Base Game & Features
Cluster Chase
A cluster is five or more vertically or horizontally adjacent symbols, and it can form anywhere on the reels. When one lands, the symbols are collected and new ones cascade in, so a single spin can chain several clusters together before it settles.
Symbols don’t just arrive one at a time. Regular symbols land as singles, doubles or quads, with a double counting as two symbols and a quad as four. That’s the whole engine of the game: big blocks feeding clusters, clusters feeding the Cluster Bar, and the bar doing the actual paying.
Cluster Bar
Every symbol has its own Cluster Bar showing the current tier pay, the symbols collected towards it, and the next tier up. Clusters collect into the bar as they form, and each consecutive cluster from the same spin adds in. Fill it and you collect the tier pay, unlock the next tier, and land a Wild on the reels.
The tier steps are where the money lives:
- Tier 1: 12 symbols
- Tier 2: another 12 symbols
- Tier 3: another 12 symbols
- Tier 4: another 14 symbols
- Tier 5: another 16 symbols
- Tier 6: another 18 symbols
- Tier 7: another 20 symbols
- Tier 8 up to the highest tier: another 25 symbols
The bar resets at the end of each spin unless a Padlock holds it, and progress is saved per bet, so changing stakes means changing bars. Bar values also scale with your bet.
Padlocks
Land a Padlock symbol and it locks a random Cluster Bar that has progress on it, carrying that progress into the next spin. You can collect up to three Padlocks in the base game and up to six during Free Spins, and any collected during Free Spins come back to the base game with you.
This is the mechanic that makes the bar matter. Without Padlocks, every spin starts from zero; with them, near-misses carry real weight into the next drop.
Bombs
Bomb symbols explode in up to four directions, horizontally and vertically, and each explosion point is replaced with a random symbol that can form a cluster. The Wild Bomb does the same but lands Wilds instead. Bombs also respect block sizes, replacing doubles for doubles and quads for quads.
Wilds and the Paytable
Wilds substitute for all regular symbols to complete clusters, land anywhere on the reels, and count individually for every combination they take part in. They don’t substitute for Scatters, Chests or Bombs, and in Free Spins they can arrive as doubles or quads.
Six symbols fill the grid, and the tier pays are steep at the top:
- Red Cherry, the top symbol: 1x for one, 5x for two, 10x for three, 25x for four, 50x for five, 100x for six, 1,000x for seven and 3,000x for eight or more
- Green Pear: 0.8x, 3.5x, 8x, 20x, 50x, 80x, 600x and 2,000x for one symbol through eight-plus respectively
- Blue Grape only starts paying at five symbols, then climbs 30x, 60x at six, 500x at seven, 1,000x at eight or more
- Purple Plum has nothing below five symbols either, with 25x, 50x, 250x and 500x running from five up to eight-plus
- Blue Berry pays from a single symbol at 0.2x, rising through 0.4x, 2x, 5x, 15x, 40x and 200x to 400x at eight or more
- Yellow Banana is the bottom rung: 0.1x, 0.2x, 1x, 3x, 8x, 30x, 150x and 300x from one symbol to eight-plus
Cherries and Pears paying from a single symbol tells you how the tiers are built: small constant drip at the bottom, a wall at the top. Getting to eight or more of anything takes cascades, Bombs and doubles stacking in the same spin.
ClusterBuck Free Spins, Chests and Jackpots
Chest Bonus
Landing a single Chest symbol collects it into the Big Chest beside the reels, and the Big Chest can randomly add another Chest anywhere on the grid. Land two Chests and the Chest Bonus triggers: both open to reveal either a Wild or a Jackpot.
If at least one reveals a Wild, between two and six Wilds are placed randomly on the reels, without replacing any Wilds already there. The chest collection itself is purely visual and doesn’t influence whether another Chest arrives.
Jackpot Bonus
Reveal two Jackpots in the Chest Bonus and the Jackpot Wheel spins: a wheel of coloured segments, each tied to one of four jackpots, GRAND down to MINI. The landing segment awards its jackpot, only one is paid, and the awards are multiples of your current bet. It can trigger in the base game or Free Spins, but not on a spin that triggers Free Spins.
Free Spins
Three Scatter symbols anywhere on the reels trigger eight free spins. Scatters only appear in the base game, don’t pay anything themselves, and can’t be substituted by Wilds. All bets during the round match the triggering spin.
Two things change in the round: Wilds can upgrade to doubles and quads, and the Padlock limit doubles from three to six. Both feed the same loop, bigger blocks and held bars. The round can’t be re-triggered, so those eight spins are all you get.
Buy Feature
The BUY FREE SPINS button in the base game offers two purchases: standard Free Spins at 95.96% RTP, and Super Free Spins at 96.01% RTP, which is the same round with more Wilds and more wins. Prices are displayed at your current bet, and buying either triggers the round instantly.
One limit worth knowing: Buy Bonus wins stop at 12 000x the bet, and anything beyond is lost. The cap doesn’t apply to base game wins, and may apply in certain regions. Both purchases play out at the triggering bet.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.6/10
Playing ClusterBuck is watching six progress bars fill in ticks, and the toy-box styling makes that oddly easy to enjoy. The reason to pick it is that nothing ever feels wasted: a spin that pays nothing still leaves bars half-full, and Padlocks carry that work forward. It’s a slot that’s always mid-conversation with you.
The best thing here is how one good chain compounds: cascades feed the bars, filled bars drop Wilds, Wilds make more clusters. A single spin can climb three tiers.
The letdown is the ceiling’s shape. Real money sits at eight-plus clusters, which almost never arrive organically, so most sessions are small tier pays and the occasional Chest Bonus sprinkling a few Wilds. The Jackpot Wheel sits behind two jackpot reveals and rarely shows up at all.
If slow-building, momentum-based play sounds like fun, this is a warm and generous version of it. Anyone after one huge hit will leave hungry. The treasure chest on the right is the honest picture of the game: pretty, patient, and not in a hurry to open.
