Gold Magnate Slot Review
A green baize table in a dim Victorian study, brass clasps on dark carved wood, ivory dice left out from some earlier game. Gold Magnate belongs squarely to that older world, and it’s built like something from it too: one bonus round, one die, and everything else on the reels reduced to a long wait between the two. That isn’t a complaint about effort. It’s the design, and on its own narrow terms it works.
BGaming runs it on a 5×3 grid with ten paylines, high volatility, an RTP of 96.1% and a maximum win of 10,490x the bet. That’s a bigger ceiling than stablemates like Fruit Million or Wild Coin Gold tend to offer, and it’s earned almost entirely in one place. Everything between here and there is formality.
Symbols and Paytable
Ten fixed lines cross the 5×3 grid, paying left to right on consecutive reels. Coinciding wins on different lines add together, and only the highest combination counts on each line. Wins are multiples of the total bet rather than the line bet, so the figures below are what a single combination actually pays at the stake shown.
There’s no wild in Gold Magnate. The Bonus symbol, marked x9990, is the only special in play, and every paying symbol carries its own multiplier tag on the reel, from the top-hat man’s x60 down to the royals’ x4. The tag is the symbol’s five-of-a-kind value, which makes the reel itself a readable paytable once you know the shorthand.
The full paytable, as multiples of the total bet:
- Top-hat man: 30x for three, 100x for four, 500x for five
- Mustache man: 20x for three, 50x for four, 200x for five
- Green dress woman: 4x for three, 10x for four, 50x for five
- A, K, Q and J: 1.5x for three, 5x for four, 12x for five
- 10: 0.5x for three, 1.5x for four, 3x for five
The spread between tiers is steep. The top-hat man pays a hundred times what the 10 pays for the same three, four or five on a line, and the three character symbols sit far above the royals. Landing three of the low card on a line returns half the total bet – the cheapest result the game offers.
The gaps inside the character tier tell you where the money is. Three top-hat men pay more than five of the green dress woman, and four of him outpay five of anyone below. It’s a paytable that rewards patience at the top and offers the royals mostly as small change to keep the balance ticking over.
The main game is capped at 500x. The bonus game is where the remaining 9,990x of the ceiling lives.
Playing It
In motion the reels stamp each symbol’s multiplier across it as it lands, so a full line of top-hat men reads as 500x without any maths. It’s a tidy touch, and it suits a game that wants its arithmetic visible.
Autospins are here in full, with the bet multiplied by the number of rounds and confirmed up front. Stops can be set on any win, on a single win above a chosen amount, or on the balance rising or falling by a figure you set. When a run of autospins ends, the settings reset and the bet returns to its default.
There’s a quick-spin mode, a spacebar option in place of the spin button, and separate toggles for music and sound effects. Quick spin can be unavailable depending on licence requirements, but the spacebar is always there. The cards turn over to a slow melodic track that matches the study rather than fighting it.
When a winning combination forms, the line animates and the amount appears in the total win field. Payline wins are multiplied by the bet per line value, except for Bonus symbols, which are paid on their own terms. That exception matters more than it sounds, because the scatter’s role is entirely the bonus trigger rather than the paytable ladder.
The Bonus Game
Three, four or five Bonus symbols anywhere on the reels trigger the bonus game. Six cards with different multipliers appear. A die is rolled, the card whose number matches the die is turned over, and its multiplier is applied to the bet.
The trigger itself scales, and it scales hard. Land four Bonus symbols and an additional x3 multiplier applies to the round; land five and the additional multiplier is x10. Five scatters are worth ten times three of them before a single card is turned.
- 3 Bonus symbols: the bonus game
- 4 Bonus symbols: the bonus game plus an additional x3 multiplier
- 5 Bonus symbols: the bonus game plus an additional x10 multiplier
The die makes it a single decisive roll rather than a picking game. There’s no second stage, no collect-or-gamble and no retrigger inside the round: one card, one multiplier, done. The revealed multiplier is applied to the winning and shown in the spin results, alongside whatever scatter-trigger multiplier brought you there.
The trigger multiplier and the card multiplier stack. A five-scatter entry that turns a strong card is the only route to anything like the round’s ceiling, which makes the fourth and fifth Bonus symbols worth watching for on every spin. Two of them on the reels is a tease; three is the game.
The bonus round is capped at 9,990x, and it’s the only place the big numbers live.
Buy Bonus
The bonus game can be bought outright for 100x the bet. The spin immediately after purchase lands three, four or five Bonus symbols, so the round is guaranteed but the upgrade isn’t – which of the x3 or x10 multipliers applies is decided by how many scatters drop on that bought spin.
- Price: 100x the bet
- Guaranteed trigger on the next spin, with 3, 4 or 5 Bonus symbols
- Buy Bonus RTP: 96.06%
The bought round runs at 96.06%, a shade under the base game’s 96.1%. The gap is small enough that the price is about appetite rather than arithmetic: it buys certainty of entry, not a better version of the round.
The purchase price appears on a pop-up once the Buy Bonus button is pressed, so there’s no ambiguity about what you’re spending before the spin goes through. After that, the bought spin behaves like any other: it lands its scatters, the round opens, and the die does the rest.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6.4/10
This is a game of long silences and one loud moment. You sit in the study, the reels tick over, and every so often the Magnate deals his cards and a die decides your evening. If that single ritual sounds worth waiting for, the wait is the whole reason to be here, and the sepia study gives it a setting with real character.
What’s good is that the round scales honestly: five scatters genuinely pay ten times three, so the rarest trigger is the richest one, and stacking that with the right card is how the ceiling gets reached. What’s against it is everything else – no wilds, no second feature, nothing to do between triggers but watch the paytable pay small change.
It’s one for the patient and the traditional, the sort of player who’d rather one good hand than three features fighting for attention. Anyone who wants constant action will be bored in the study before the cards come out. For those happy to wait at the baize, the Magnate can be generous host.
